Coastal Kits backgrounds

I ordered a number of backgrounds from Coastal Kits in December and they finally showed up today. Unfortunately, they missed two items on my order so hopefully they will set things straight and get those shipped out to me quickly. 

Here is the first one I’m experimenting with. This was taken with my phone camera and ceiling light. Hope to get some better photos done this weekend. Also, P40 I’ve not really revealed yet. 







Once I get all the backgrounds setup and photos taken, I’ll make a post in the gallery.

Seems like a good starting point. I imagine some soft lighting in the background is ideal.

I have experimented with a simple printed background and base for pics in my little photo box. Just a normal sheet of legal size (8.5" by 14") paper wrapped around inside the box. Was pretty happy with the results but would be way more effective in a larger box where I could pull back a bit. Want to try taking some shots with a larger background (11"x17" ledger size) in my paint booth which has adjustable indirect lighting. I need to somehow up my photography since I am embarrassed at how good some of you guys are at it.

So I got out my camera and lighting setup tonight to mess with some of the displays.

This particular background is pretty realistic in my opinion. The issue is, the base the plane is sitting on is too flat. I will apply some dirt and static grass to make it more three dimensional.

Back to the Allied hanger background and base. I attempted to pose the plane in a more pleasing manner:

This particular shot is the same angle, but I moved my light between the shots. Which do you all think looks more realistic? I know it's nice having the light to show the underwing detail, but I'm not sure how realistic that is...

More realistic would be black and white but I prefer the darker one. The light one looks too washed out.

I agree the darker one looks better. Ultimately, I want it to look as realistic as possible. 

The lighter one shows more detail, but something seems phony with how I had to have my lighting to capture the details on the underside.

That’s pretty dang sweet with the tropical background!!

I have the impression that all of these backgrounds only work from a ground perspective. Every shot from a higher level spoils the proportions.
Then the light from below is sadly the next issue that will add to an unrealistic effect.

The tropical background almost rocked my socks off. I want one!

I think a more above shot would work if the base the planes sit on wasn’t so flat. 

I plan on heavily modifying the ground on all of them. I’ll add fake grass, dirt, bushes, rocks, etc. Also, addition of other kits like jeeps figures will help add to the realism as well. 

Using these backgrounds is about 30 x easier and faster than photoshopping my own background in lol.

I wish they'd have the jungle background also in a wider version for 1/35. 42cm is pretty narrow for my taste.

A few updates on the base for the Japanese island backdrop:

PVA glue + dirt from my yard:




More PVA glue as well as AK Mud:




Next up I’ll be adding static grass, bushes, and probably some small rocks to simulate stones.

This prob shoulda been posted in the Diorama section… After this base is completed, this thread will be done. Cheers!!

That last pic of the P-40 is awesome!  🤩  I need a desert background for a North African Luftwaffe scene and this thread is sure selling me on these.  Adding the sand is a great idea I'd think and one that I would try too.   I believe I'm familiar with your work from iModeler.   Thanks for sharing this! 👍
