Lindberg 1/245 LST

It followed me home. Okay, the Post Office person brought it. Almost the same.  And, my old friend, Badger 105 Patriot died or at least stopped working. So, off it goes to Badger. I think it is the trigger mechanism.  This went back in the box for a bit. 

I love the box art, too.

I built all of those old Lindbergh ships as a kit and have 3 or 4 in the stash to do again someday. They are among my favourites.
Will be watching eagerly.

Thanks. I hope to do the thing justice. Faily low parts count, but many small, itsy-bitsy pieces. I tend to lose those...or break them off.

Keep in mind when weathering in that scale you will not see distinct patches of rust or grime. It is 1/245 scale so imagine what you would see from about 240 feet away. Any weathering should be more subtle and blended than in a larger scale where the "viewing distance" would be closer. 

Here is what I did with a 1/144 U-boat which would have w "viewing distance" of around 120 feet.

Looking through pictures I don't think there will be much rust to be found. Many of these ships were only a year or two old at D-Day and there would have been loads of time to keep them painted and cleaned up until then. They would get a little grubby after D-Day when they were busy but even then not a pile of rust.

Looking at many pictures they all do seem to have some pretty heavy exhaust staining  about 3/4 way down on both sides.

LST-325 is the one represented with the box decals, and is a restored vessle open for tours. I believe it is in Evansville Indiana right now. About a 2-3 hour drive from me. 

I wasn't planning on a rust bucket approach, although that seems easier to me! I was thinking small pinpoint and brushed out. No patches of rust. I'll be off to the LHS later this morning to pick up some Tamiya spray in Hull Red, and some Grays. the a/b is off this morning....if the post office is open.

It is sort of interesting that the museum ship appears to have more rust and stains on it than the ones in service. Guess it is just old age.




The lower hull below the waterline is where you can really go to town with scrapes, rust a gunk! That ramp can be messed up nicely as well.

The 325 is actually in Texas right now for routine inspection and any necessary repairs. So it could be painted up all pretty right now. They took her there under her own power and she regularly makes trips up and down the rivers. They have a pretty dedicated volunteer group but the old girl still gets a fair amount of use between stays at her home in Evansville. Also about 2.5 to 3 hours away from me. Supposed to be back at her home dock in a month or two.

Well, that and not having a crew of young sailors to keep busy painting things to keep them busy and out of trouble...

No. Nothing as there is no interior at all.

Tanks were parked on the top deck and the lower deck. There is a ramp that goes between them.

Don't think I have ever seen a picture with tanks up there. Usually soft skins or LCPs.
Just need to find a bunch of 1:245 scale jeeps, trucks and about 500 figures to fill that upper deck.

I bet that tanks on the top deck would make an LST too top heavy. Each combat loaded Sherman weighed over 30 tons. LST's were notorious for rolling in rough seas due to their flat bottom hull. I've seen photos of the top deck with Half Tracks, but those weigh a lot less than a Sherman.
