Tyrrell 006

  Ever since the NNL I seemed to have lost my building mojo.  Part is because I lost my model show buddy and part is because I've had a bad flair up of sciatica.  But this last week end I re-energized my mojo by breaking out a pre-started kit which is one I really want to finish.  Since it's barely started, I think it qualifies for this group build.








While stationed in Germany for the US Army, I had the opportunity to attend the German GP at the Nurburgring. Needless to say, that experience left quite an impression on me. The Tyrrells of Stewart and Cevert were the class of the field and took first and second easily. Fast forward 40 years and while checking out posts on the F1 Model forum, I came across someone who was selling a kit of the 1/20 Tyrrell 006 from that race. I knew immediately that I wanted that kit and was able to acquire it. This was my first MFH kit and the beginning of my journey to the dark side. After getting the kit and going through it, I realized I was in over my head. I had never worked with white metal or photo etch. I talked to a couple of modeling buddies and it was suggested that I get an easier kit from MFH. So I got a BRM P83 as a practice kit. I learned a lot from building that kit and was hooked on MFH. Then in the summer of 2020, MFH released a 1/12 version of the Tyrrell. The only problem was that they only released the Belgian/Monaco car which was an earlier version. After studying the instructions of the 1/20 version, I realized I would be able to modify the 1/12 kit to the German GP version.








I had gotten the engine block pieces cleaned up and drilled so I could assemble the basic block.





I has also gotten the trans pieces ready.





So that is the point I re-started this kit at.  With a 3 year build window, I think I can pull off both 1/12th kits for this GB

Paul! Good to see you coming back to the bench! And what a great subject to dive back in on. The Tyrrell 006 is a looker and I love the backstory and that you were able to see these race. This is going to be a fun build to follow.

Thanks Kyle.  I initially tried to get to the Monaco GP, but got snapped up for week-end guard duty.  It's a good thing since getting a good view of the track at Monaco was very difficult.

The two main differences that are visible in the two versions are the sidepod/engine cover and the extra fin off of the airbox.



The extra fin is easy. It's an add-on which I can leave off. But the side pods had to go under the knife. So after double and triple checking my photo references, I crossed my fingers and did some surgery.






The main chassis pieces have been drilled and fitted.





Once the engine block was together, I assembled the exhaust.

Nice surgery on the side pods. It looks like the powertrain/suspension is a build upon itself with the amount of parts you need to assemble

Oh, an Introduction to MFH kits? You couldn’t ask for a better builder to take you along for the journey. These kits from this manufacturer are incredibly detailed and sometimes really difficult to get to cooperate. But when someone like Paul gets ahold of one then look out. You’re going to have a killer build coming.

Thanks Mike.  One of the reasons I got hooked on MFH kits is because there is no need to buy additional upgrade kits.  MFH supplies everything.  Turned aluminum  parts, wire, p/e, vacuum form parts, etc.

Thanks Joe.  Losing Mike was quite the blow.  We've been modeling/contest buddies for over 8 years.






Basic chassis is done. I painted the resin pieces in Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf. The white metal pieces were sent through my magnetic polisher to shine them up. The white metal sides and floor were so large that I had to polish them one at a time.




Once the chassis was assembled, I started to get the roll bar and pieces fitted.






I also got the body work in primer.  Couldn't help but fit body pieces on for a glamour shot.

Great pic. Usually see the inside front lifting. Only place I've experience inside back lifting is go-karting - this is a super fast stiff chassis go-kart!

That pic is from the old Nurburgring. There are 2 places where the cars will get airborne on it.  I'm sure that pic is the smaller of the two jumps.

Every time I see the elf logo, I expect to see the six-wheeler. This is a really interesting body style.

I spent a little time on the 006 today.  I decided to have a go at making the mirror mounts.  MFH supplies the rod and pattern.  All I had to do was make it look acceptable.






I forgot to mention I have this excellent book for photo references.

I had one of those Ebbros.  The fact they did the mirrors like that impressed me.
