I wasnt sure where to post this. But I went with Diorama because the end result is to have it on a walnut base with tracks. I was thinking maybe even some lights, or a rail road crossing signal. Something the boy would really like. Its a surprise for his 8th birthday in September. Never built a locomotive before. But what the heck. I never built a giant rocket before I built him his Saturn V with leds and fake smoke. Should be ok. Here is how I plan it for it to go. Ive got a bunch of walnut board that I can use. So thats material on hand. Im thinking raised bed tracks with grass and gravel. At first I was thinking 3 or 4 like street lights behind it to light it up but Not sure how it would look. I think maybe finding a railroad crossing sign or something like that will be good. it will be easy to hid the wires and since its a diorama and will stay in place I can use a plug for power instead of batteries. The kit is pretty rough. I dont know if it was due to being stopred in a hot place, or jsut a s*** mold but it came out of the box with the parts trees curved. Annoying but I dont think it will affect the kit. Its going to be hard keeping this a secret, since the boy loves being in the garage with me. Ive got all the parts hidden like this so he cant see them. So until it gets put on the base, ill do my best to hide it. Wish me luck!

Being 1/87 (HO) scale the railroad accessories you can use for the diorama are limitless. I doubt there is not a single real world item not available through the model railroad suppliers.

You just saved me from having to google search what scale 1/87 was. My LHS is closing this month and he told me to come in and hed give me a deal on what he has left. Perfect time to go and score some HO scenery and stuff. Thank you! I was excited to give it to him... After seeing it sitting on the walnut I think Itll be hard to give it away haha! This is going to be fun to watch 🤓 Ill do my best! I’ll be in on this one James. Hope you can keep it a secret man. Thanks, Joe! It will take some extra effort but souldnt be too hard. Let's do this!

A great idea.
I actually won one of these in a raffle at a model show, last year. I gave it away because it's not my thing and I don't have the space but I did look in the box and like you found that it was pretty deformed on pretty much any angle you looked at, especially the body. Will be really interested in how this turns out.

This is a really cool build and a great idea. I don't know if your son is a modeler or not, but this might be the door to getting him interested?? My dad was a train guy and it was his passion for that which got me into modeling. Before he passed, he wanted my brother to have something off his layout. This is what I came up with. I hope you don't mind my adding to your thread, I just wanted to share the memories that your post bought back. In a time when it's easy to guy out and buy something, I think what you are doing is very special, well done sir.

So far, mine looks to be ok I will jsut need to hold a few parts in place while glue sets to keep them straight. This is a really cool build and a great idea. And yes, my son is into modeling. He builds snap kits along side me when I am working in the garage every now and then. A great idea. I’m splitting my attention between this thread and my mailbox…where any day now my Big Boy will be showing up! Nice! You ordered one as well? yep! One popped up on Scale Model Graveyard and I managed to win the auction relatively cheap 👍 Doesn't look like it will arrive before I leave for vacation so next week most likely for my unboxing event. I've always wanted to build one of these and now I have the motivation! At this rate we should all post in the Duel Builds section and compare different approaches tot he model. I loved some of the pictures of these. So much to be done with it.

Slow progress but we have started. Some bending of parts is making it difficult for an already below average build quality to fit perfect. I tried a bit of heat gun persuasion but got to nervous. Its ok. My son wont care or even notice. I got primer and black top coat on the main sections of our loco. I also ran to my LHS and luckily he still had a few pieces of HO track left. (he's closing his doors after almost 50 years) I think with some gravel material or dirt and grass.. this will look way better. Plus just thinking of painting those tracks gives me anxiety haha.

I built a 1/144 Dragon K5 Leopold for our Son-in-law a while back. I remember being a bit intimidated trying to figure out painting the track base it came with. I ended up calling it a FICE and sprayed color on it.

So Ive looked at photos online, and did my best with the paint here. I primed in Mr. Surfacer 1500. Next was a coat of flat black with high pressure from far away to give it some texture. I don't know, the trains I have seen in person were not shiny and smooth. After that I applied some alclad stainless steel because I was going for the silver look on the two areas in the photos. It was too bright so I sprayed some Tamiya XF-56 over it. I'm really liking where we are right now. Ill add some browns or rust color in very very small thin amounts in a few random spots and I think that will be it. Well, not counting any soot, or grease or dirt etc.

way cool. I have almost bought this kit on several occasions, but after the 1/35 BR-52, I kept deciding that I'd had my fill of trains for a few years. Still, a BB build is something not seen very often online, so I'll be following with great interest. BTW, those photos tcoat posted of the abandoned engines were amazing and very inspirational.
