Hi Everyone - geeze it's nice to be back ... moving house was epic & we're happy the youngster is out of that place. ... after that both the missus & I caught a hefty dose of the flu - so that knocked us out for a while ... Finally got back to the bench for a few hours this afternoon. Anyways - seems I'm having some issues with the image website - so I'll crack on with this tomorrow ...
1. Glad that you're done with the move Quinny. That's never fun. 2. Sorry to hear that you and your wife caught the flu....again..... never fun. Glad to hear that both of you are feeling better and 3. Glad that you're back at the forum and the bench on this bad boy again. Lookin' forward to those pictures of the progress.......

Ok - So the image site is back up & working - let's get a quick update out.
... and thanks for the get well messages
I'll start here:
Just trying to get everything to fit nicely took some time. The kit seems quite good, but needs some jiggery/pokery to make things go together properly...
Oh yeah - see those glasses there ? They're great - just cheap x2 reading glasses. $20 - I can see clearly now !
Those (dunno what to call them) flap carriers - third row from the top - they didn't fit very well. I had to drill out the holes in the wing to get them to go in.
The thing I'm trying to get my head around is painting things in order - as an engineer, I guess what we call it is "order of operation" - What do I stick together now & what do I need to paint first.
I'm sure it all comes with experience - but it does make you think !
All the slats & flap interiors need to be painted red - so here's what I came up with:
Yes - I now realise I've over masked the damn thing - but I still don't trust my airbrushing skills ... and besides - masking is new to me and something I need to learn.
Thanks for stopping by & hopefully we'll see some bits painted red soon !

Well ... not great, but not terrible I guess:
(X7 Red, I think ?)
Some bleed - but I guess the top coat camo should hide some of my mistakes - tried to clean some of it up with thinner - note to self - don't do that
[Edit] - You may be thinking - hmmm gloss red ? - me too... I'm thinking, maybe when I give the whole thing a satin clear coat, that should knock that gloss down a bit ... Dunno ...
Again - thanks for stopping in for a look & by the way... don't be shy in offering advice. I've got no idea what I'm doing here

Nice work on the red. I agree with the satin coat will knock down the shine.

No worries at all. You’re doing great!! I also like the red color and a satin coat would definitely take the edge off the shine nicely

I was just having another look at the images from above & noticed these:
I think they're lighting strips ... as far a I can tell the F-111C doesn't have these, so they'll have to go. There's a couple on the tail fin as well...
Putty time !

your order of operations is looking good. I finally found my way back here. haven't checked in since you were finishing up the cockpit. I was interested in the approach for the flaps. Are you doing satin vs. flat for scale effect or something totally different?

Here's what I've come up with ...
Basically, a dry fit - held together with blue-tac ... So my idea is use the pieces of the flaps / slats as a mask ...
I'm trying this SMS surfacer, straight from the bottle to airbrush - seemed to go down very nicely Sprays really thin & dries quick ...
The wings will stay fitted like this until I get the cammo paint scheme down ... I may have to touch-up the red after that ? dunno, see how we go.
As far as a final finish - I'll use a clear lacquer dullcote spray (Testors)...
What could possibly go wrong
As usual - thanks for stopping by

This is coming along very nicely mate. The fact that you don't know what you are doing doesn't really matter because I have no idea what I'm looking at either. Sure, I know it's an aircraft but all the little bibs and bobs!! Could be anything lol!!!!!!!

The SMS paints are nice for sure. There’s a couple brands out there using those prethinned acrylic lacquers. ” What could possibly go wrong “ 🤣 said that a couple times myself. Better make yourself up a test piece that you can spray ahead of time to make sure those 2 different paints like each other 🍻

Good afternoon modelers Again, it seems I've been away for weeks - well ... because I have been away from the forum for weeks ... Can someone explain this to me... One of the guys at work leaves, so there's just me in my department plus a part timer - so I'm on-call 24x7x365 - how does that work out ? Anyhoos ... what's happening at the bench I hear you ask. Side project number one... G-Kid No. 4 decided to rip the head off his favorite dinosaur: Crisis averted Back to the F-111 (the dino took some time to fix) Starting on the engines - getting ready for paint. (one of them)
So much wonderful detail on these things that will never be seen again once buttoned up within the fuselage (Sorry about the lighting - afternoon sun comes screaming in through the window. I have to fix that sometime.)
... and you may see in the background there - side project number two - broken mast on the little bloke's wooden boat - also fixed I'll get out to the bench tomorrow to crack on with a bit more work - hopefully... C-Ya then.
[edit] - Something I wanted to tell you & forgot ... we have two B2 Spirits out here doing some exercises with the local boys & girls at RAAF, Amberly - very cool ... about 12 miles west of here ...

Grandkids have a way of taking priority for sure! When ours show up everything else stops as time spent with them is always too short.

LOL!!! Doncha just love those little "side hustles" Quinn? I get 'em all the time. I've had to do stuff like fix my wife's earrings, fix something on one of my wife's projects.....help her paint some projects...and the list goes on. Sometimes it seems that my bench is used for everything BUT modeling. lol Progress is coming along well on this jewel of a model and you're right about the good engine detail on this bird. Hey ......whether it'll be seen or not when finished.....you'll know it's all in there.

Hey, those side projects can be pretty important!! Nice job getting those taken care of. That engine does look like it’s got some nice detail.

You had me at F-111, bloody awesome aircraft. I used to live near RAF Upper Heyford where they used to fly F-111's and EF-111's - great aircraft. Having just read through your thread, awesome work you' re doing!

Good evening everyone ... about 6PM Sunday here in sunny Brisbane. 30C (86F) today - hope you're all having a wonderful weekend. Do you guys have a footy tipping comp? We have 16 teams that play in the national league each week... out of eight games I picked zero I give up ... at least my team made the finals this year ...
The F-111. Get on with it Quinny
I have the engines done today ... I believe they're P&W TF-30's ? I often wonder why the first of the F-14's had so much trouble with the TF-30's - dunno ?
Keep in mind - neither you nor I will ever see these engines again ...
Glued together & yes, there's seams & imperfections everywhere ... see above statement
Tamia X-10 Gun metal black - I think ...
Masking ...
XF-16 Flat Aluminium, from memory ... (Aluminum if you prefer )
A light SMS Black wash - photos don't seem to show it up - but it's there ...
... and again.
that looks crooked - it's not, trust me ...
The real thing
Have a great week everyone ...
If you can't be good - be good at it

The front of those engines look just right. I agree with not doing the details on the parts that won't be seen. Why bother

Agreed!! Front of the engines look good and that’s the only part that matters anyways. Nice update!
