Why worry, each of us is wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.

Hey Ben, great work so far! I love the play by play, are you Tony distant relatives? ;D Would like to see the nail glue, another glue that works well with PE is Gator glue.

Hey Ben, Can you post a pic of the bottle or brand of Nail glue that you use for your PE. My sister may have something similar i could try. And im always ready to learn new tricks...in modeling of course. ;D Gary Hi Gary, My friend Alan uses it for his PE work. I spent last Sunday at his house being taught PE asembly by the master! He uses this stuff all the time for PE. It has a pink lid and white bottle (all plastic). It's a standard off the shelf product. Nothing special. You just need the glue for sticking on false fingernails! It sticks like CA but takes a bit longer to 'go off' allowing movement of parts. I'll be dressing my Firefly up in PE tomorrow. I have bought an RB PE aerial base. The kit version was a nightmare so I'm hoping this will be better - it's all metal with a decent base too.
Any suggestions on making correct antennae for a Firefly? How long and what material, rigid or 'whippy' etc? ;D Cheers guys, Ben

Good Lord! I am in awe of all those who produce outstanding feats of PE assembly! I've spent all afternoon fitting those bloody PE fenders and strips to the side of my Firefly! Aagh! Also the RB antennae base is done which worked well and the other niggly bits too. Please don't take the mick if you so feel inclined - I may explode I know it's looking a bit messy at the minute but the Firefly is complete (assembly, at least). I've got the spare tracks to fit tomorrow and the travel lock and then she'll be primed ready for painting next weekend. I'm in a rush as I need to tidy up but I wanted to post a progress report! The hull halves are glued but the tracks will obviously be coming off now along with the turret. The turret was a VERY loose fit so some thin strips of 30 thou card were fitted around the turret ring to make it a solid fit that still rotates yet doesn't rattle about! Seriously, I know it's a abit messy at the minute but this PE was a MASSIVE achievment for me. I'm looking forward to getting some OD on her now! Please can you let me know what you think and I'd love to hear suggestions etc. This build so very nearly got thrown against a wall today but I hunk on in there and am glad I did. Some additional glue and tidying is needed before priming but overall - not too bad imo. Just scruffy which I don't like - at this stage I like my models to be 'tidy'! From the photos I can see that the Fenders need looking at again as they have slightly parted and the applique armour needs sticking down on some corners. All the best, Ben I'll post some photos of her after priming tomorow Take care, Ben Thanks guys,

Hi guys, First off the BAD news Okay- I had everything looking as good as I could get it to with the PE now fitted and a few little missing items fiited and other parts corrected. It still looked very rough and I wasn't feeling any love for this build today. It was slowly dawning on me that I'd given very little thought to this build and would find it even harder when it came to detailing. My stomach felt like water because when I airbrushed the primer over it instead of making it look a little smoother and tidy of course it didn't - it showed up the horrible mess that was this Firefly in front of me. Glue marks, rough edges and PE that looked Godawful. Why do we use primer - to show up imperfections! They showed up alright! So, in a rare fit of rage and despair I threw this model at the wall as hard as I could, instantly regretting my rash action but knowing at the same time the build was going nowhere and it just wasn't to be. Sorry to all of you who have provided help and guidance along this journey. Now the good news (or better news at least) The turret was a total success and with the RB barrel and Antennae mount it looked splendid so that has been retained (it wasn't on the build when it got launched at the wall). I'm VERY DEFINATELY planning on buying this kit again and the turret I have here will be perfect after today as I spent time on it tidying it up. The barrel is fixed with CA so it can't be removed. The plans for the hull are to use it as a knocked out Firefly. Maybe next year but for now I want nothing more to do with it! So, moving on. I will be resurrecting my Willys Jeep build which got put on hold when Andy asked me to build a StuG for his Panzer III GB. It's all good to go and left in a very nice place to start from. That will tide me over just fine until a GB that is starting in September. I've already got wip photos and a start of a blog in progress so I'll get it posted in here next weekend. Shermans are a very different thing to Panzer III's and this was not a wise choice of kit to be my first Allied build (apart from a couple of old Tamiya things that I built a couple of years ago and ended up as test-beds). I'll know EXACTLY what to do when I tackle this kit again. I think a basic Tamiya Sherman will be a good idea before I start this 'tricky and testing' build again. I just couldn't feel the love for this build and when the kit started getting messy and rough - well, you've just read what happens. Onwards and upwards, I hold out hope for a decent little Jeep now! Sorry for the link but this site won't let me post this oldish Photobucket picture? Mods? i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy343/Hinksy1/Models%20-%20October%202011%20onwards/Jeepbasicassembly140412013.jpgCheers guys, Ben

Dunno what to say here really Ben....the whole point of priming IS to show up any flaws in the first place Don't understand why yer trashed it - nothing a bit of clean up, filling and sanding wouldn't have put right surely? If everyone's builds went right first time, every time it wouldn't be much of a challenge eh? That's why most of us keep at it, to try and improve with every build and that includes sticking with the ones that give us a little more grief than the rest! Oh well, hopefully the next one will go better! Hey Dicky, As was my point - stupidly I'd expected a coat of airbrush primer to level it out but it looked worse than ever - of course it would have after a coat of primer. This build has really pushed me to the limits over the last month and was becoming a chore. I know at that point it should have been put away and a new build started on but I'd lost hope and as I said, it was a daft fit of anger that led to it being flung against a wall - instantly regretted but the deed done nonetheless. A rare fit of rage on my part. Very silly. I'll build it again as it can be picked up very cheaply now. I now know how to build this kit. I'd gone about it all wrong and it really was ina right old state. The photos didn't reflect that but it was a very, very poor build that had started to test my patience and it ended up smashed to bits (the turret was kept separate and is fine - I'll be using that again). Had I just listened to sense and put this away for a while to be revisited in the next few months things may have been very different. Like I say, sorry to EVERYONE who has chimed in and given me help with this kit - it will be built again in the New Year as I have too much on this year with GB's etc! I feel like I have let you down but this will be remedied Ben

Sorry to hear it met its end against the wall Ben...but as you say there are some lessons you can take from it and put to better use the next time in the future. Every build presents its own challenges and trials, so onward and upward and hope your next one is more enjoyable!

Thanks Bill and Prof,
I'm 'dissapointed' of course but can say with certain confidence that this build was not a waste as I certainly came out of the end of it with a lot more knowledge - particularly on the PE and 1/35 Sherman Firefly assembly front! I will build this kit in the new year. They can be picked up for low prices if you look around. The turret with RB barrel cam out great so that will drop straight into the next Firefly!
A nice relaxing Tamiya Jeep is just the ticket now! The upgrade set that Andy sent me will be handy (Resin tarps, satchels and rifles etc).
Thanks Bill,
Ben
