Wouter- Hey my Tiggy brother! LOL Really like those AF products... I am going to order the rest that I don't have yet except for modern stuff as you know I am only into WWII/Korea War. Can't wait to add more maybe tonight if I am not too tired or drunk from the Super Bowl party...
Carl- LOL! You didn't know Germans were really into botanical gardens? LOL Thanks for looking... more to come!
Spud- No kidding... they are pricey but pretty worth it. Figure some boxes will last me for more than ten builds while some maybe five builds depending on how much you use. That's why they were Christmas gift from my beloved wife... LOL!!!

Dicky- Thanks mate!!! Don't we all love mud? I have been thinking about adding mud to the Tiggy too... am afraid I will ruin its look it has now.
Bill- Thanks! You got that right! Left party early because game was boring and power outage... now the game is finally more exciting. DUH?!?
Boo- Oh boy, I better order the rest before everybody gets them. LOL I noticed many are out of stock so guess more stuff are bring grown at this moment... thanks for looking.
Joe- Same here... I have been avoiding the base for three years. My last build had a base made of plaster from MIG... not made in scratch so from now on I think I will do it from scratch unless time is not in my favor. Tell you the truth it is my favorite part of this build so far...

Thread- Thanks man! I removed second post as it was a double. Glad you have been enjoying my thread... I need to go back and update my part at FSM. LOL Guys- What a GREAT Super Bowl! Unfortunately I was rooting for the 49ers but they didn't give at the end. Attacked the base after the game by adding smaller stuff. Choice of weapons... Once again I really like those barley pieces from Armor Farm. You can cut them up into 4-5-6 pieces each... At first I hated the dry grass from Woodland Scenics but finally got better hang of it. First I apply white glue in the middle and allow 'em to dry for 15 minutes. Once dry you cut it in half where the glue was applied... Result... Hope you like it... I am pretty pleased with the result. Next I will apply snow... that is the scariest part for me! LOL

Carl- LOL! I hope to finish it S-O-O-N!!! Can't wait... thanks for the nice words. My manager is huge NASCRA fan... she talks about it all the times and I think I do not understand 99% of what she is saying. Spud- Thanks mate! Gary- Thanks buddy! Hope to add snow later today... slept for only four hours and half. Good thing I am off today so I will definitely take a nap after my son's surgery later today. Just a small surgery to remove a mole... later.

Mark- Planning to use snow flakes from Woodland Scenics. Can't think of anything else as I have read plenty good things about those. Will post pictures of all products i am about to use... I am not sure if I will do anything tonight after two nights of little sleep. LOL
Dicky- WOW! I totally missed your link you posted earlier... obviously I need a very good night of sleep. Watched the video clip how to apply snow and it was helpful... it looks similar to Woodland Scenics. Appreciate your help... thanks buddy!

Andy , there aint that much to understand about Nascar ........all you have to know is that they go hell bent and turn left ! And the fact that you can sit there and watch them race for 50 laps with nothing happening ....but as soon as you get up and leave there's a 10 car pile up !

Dario- Glad Gray Tigers are your favorites too... I have few more in stash. I have been playing with snow using two different attempts to apply them and I think I got it. Thank you so much for stopping by! Bill- Hey Tex! Thanks buddy! Had too much fun doing this... sure felt like if I was in a landscaping business. LOL

Carlos- Missed your post... no kidding about those racing cars. I rode in one last year in a Formula One car here at Indy track and I nearly soiled my pants...
At my work we often get free tickets to Brickyard and Indy 500 from media contractors who wants our business. You need to get your arse here one day...

I can post a picture to show you two completely different results using different methods of applying snow on the base. I'd LOVE to hear your honest opinion...
Planning to add more snow tomorrow... today was a long day at the hospital but my son is doing great now.

Alls well with your son aye....good deal bro! Id love to see your snow methods brotha! Using two different methods applying snow... I think I have found the winner. First, I used the spot that will not be seen because the Tiggy will be sitting on it so I used it for practice. The left part seems to be messy... right part looks like slow shirking & melting snow. It seems to be obvious one of methods works best... found great tip when I googled. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZhSFjV0zcQAnd all future snow spots will be much smaller too. Good learning experience for me... what do you guys think?

I dont know what you did different from the left to the right side but to me they both look realistic Andy .

|
|
Post by deafpanzer on Feb 5, 2013 10:30:41 GMT -5
Thanks Carl! I feel that the left part is way too grainy and messy. It was done by applying watered down glue from Wooland Senics and pour snow flakes on it and it was repeated few times. Then topped with watered down glue which took much longer...
It seems it is easier to mix white glue with snow powder first then apply it on the base. Better control and less messy! Remember me and my mild OCD thing... LOL Appreciate you tagging along... thanks again!

That snow looks great. I've not used snow in except one time that was a very overall dusting. My experiments with patches of thicker snow hove not looked too good. I'd be happy to get that look.

Andy, i think both look great and i really wouldnt have noticed the differenc had you not pointed it out. The right side does have a nice slightly melted edge look to it and i think it looks pretty sweet. Gonna check out the vid too. Gary

Andy i watched the vid and it seems pretty simple, but how did you apply to the base and spread so smoothly. Also, what would be an approx. mix ratio of snow to white glue? The fella in the vid used a white paper towl and i couldnt see a thing. Thanks brother! Gary

cool stuff on both the groundwork and snow bud, I do like the one on the left as well mate. You gotta try the JoeFix snow btw, I have a huge bag of it and it looks superb , lasts a lifetime ^^ btw, since I quite use turpentine and Lacquer Thinners, I'm thinking of buying a mask like you have, which filters do you use? (I assume it's a 3M mask?) Cheers

Marc- Thanks buddy! I think you will like the method I found on internet. Be sure to wear nitrile gloves or glued snow will be sticking on your fingers when you press 'em down. Gary- I agree it was difficult to figure out what was the ratio... remember most youtube video clips are not captioned so its worse at my end. LOL I didn't understand either why he used paper towel? Huh? I used a paper plate so I can just throw it away at the end. I started with 50/50 then realized I added too much glue so I just added more snow flakes... looks like 75/25 for now. Depending how heavy you want. I used my fingers of course with gloves on to flatten the snow... I want them to look like end of winter as they are about to vanish into air. Then I added watered down glue from Woodland Scenic to make them more even and secure. I did that twice... hope this helps. I probably will learn something else new tonight when I add more snow. Wouter- Glad you liked it too. Thanks for the tip! My mask is from 3M too... I chose it because it is widely available at home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowes so I can easily buy new filters when needed. Newer mask looks a lot nicer than my old one... maybe you want to buy mine? LOL
