it's probably time I started the Cyberhobby Tiger I late that's been languishing on the shelf since last July. Fresh scrubbed and dried There seem to be alot of extra parts in this (3 turret roofs, etc) so a goodish donation to the spares box is in the future. Am trying the Tamiya stick on plastic sheet zimmerit also, looks like it'll fit OK but we'll see. Forward!! Regards Mark

Oh nice, another TIggy.
Is the salt and pepper important in the build?

Looks like fun. This kit should go especially good with salt and pepper.

Well, I'm kind of bowled over by the responses, thanks guys Not off to the most auspicious beginnings. The Tamiya zimmerit does not work on this kit, no real surpise there. Guess it's back to the old fashioned way which is the woodburner with a modified tip With which one can make patterns like this I like the one on the left. There also seems to be warpage So The hull is also warped but it's warped in rather than out so perhaps simply installing the other major parts will cure the problem. I sure hope I'll not have to fight such things all thru this build. Other than this it seems to be a nice complex Dragon family kit with lots of nifty well molded parts. Regards, Mark

oh, another Tiger I, cool stuff mate!!!! Looking forward to it! about the zimmerit pattern you tried: I think it's a bit too 'big', zimmerit was much more subtle I think. I found out that working with a screwdriver gives better results (not that I'm an expert on doing that, only did it once and just a small area also, a nice detail about zimmerit on Tiger I's is that the zimmerit on the turret was broader than on the hull Cheers

Can't have too many Tigers! I've heard of many having to use a brace at the front of the hull to solve the hull warpage issue Mark, so you may have to resort to something along those lines as it appears to be a consistent flaw in the way the hulls were molded and not a one-off type of thing.

Hey all Andy-Thanks I'll need it Joe-And that's just the more obvious in crooked parts Pete-Thanks Wouts-I was thinking the same thing myself late last night, will recut the iron end finer. Heated screwdrivers would work on an entire zim job but would be slow and agonizing as one would have to constantly reheat the tip, it's better to use an electric impliment. Thanks for the observation, that might have got by me Bill-What you've heard is dead on, the hull fit is VERY bad. Disappointing, I'd expect more from a kit that retails for $100 I just want everything don't I So the battle rages, this is my cure for the less than ideal hull fitting noted above I may have to buy more clamps. Right now I feel like the garbage bucket beckons and there's a nice Tamiya late Tiger 1 down at the LHS. In an hour I will not and be back at it, can't let it get the best of me, no? Regards, Mark

Keep pluggin along Mark....she'll come out a peach if ya do. I had the same issue on my Tiger and it took 4 clamps and all night to cure before i could continue.

Carl-I've done this before, it's a pain but using putty is worse, to me anyway. As can be seen in the following however, I took a different tack Gary-Yessir, am doing just that. The ugly part's over anyway (I think)... Tonite it's 12 degrees with a slight breeze, perfect weather to go outside and grill some New York strips. I did this with a bottle of Italian dry red wine for antifreeze. Now, in the simplicity of cooking I often do my best thinking and the dry red helps thoughts flow along. Somewhere in that time I became determined to use the Tamiya stick on zim as much as possible because I'm stubborn and also did not want to waste nine bucks. Here's how it turned out There are some parts that I may have to woodburn like the mantlet as Tammy and Dragon are radically different. The stuff is clear so one can see where cutouts and holes have to go and handles pretty nicely; one can pull it back up and reposition a couple of times without loosing adhesive properties. Guess the acid test will be to see what it paints like. Didn't Wingy use something like this on a Panther awhile back? Regards, Mark

Mark, I used laser cut paper zim. I already can't remember the company that makes it but I have the guys biz card around here somewhere. I have to agree with wouter, the wood burning zim looks big. While the tammy stuff may not be perfect either I think is has that subtler look that will be better when it's all painted.

The only knock I've heard on the Tamiya sets is how low the zim detail is and the fact that it tends to disappear or fade under paint. Will be interesting to see how this particular set behaves!

Thanks, gents I googled paper zimmerit and found the place that makes it, so far all they offer is a couple of sets for a Panther but it looks like nice stuff. Well, I base painted the Tiger and this is what came out Awful. Can't abide it. As soon as the paint dries the whole thing's getting peeled. I'll look into other zim sets but most likely the hot iron will come out on this one. Now the Tammy zim probably isn't really bad stuff, the facts that I'm likely not very good at working with it combined with it going on a kit it was not meant for are what led to a poor outcome. This is what I get for having deep thoughts and making plans while drinking Dago red!! Regards, Mark

You are one brave guy... hot iron? But I have seen some Zimm created by hot Zimm and it was very good! Those guys used old knife attached to the hot iron instead and it looked very realistic. Paper Zimm from Tamiya looks too clean and pretty in my opinion... remember I love damage and tear. LOL I am still enjoying your blogging as I continue to learn stuff other than your big toys.
