Wow, that's unfortunate! The tape must have some strong power to lift decals even after sealing and setting. I'm assuming you allowed the Future to cure for at least 24 hours before masking? Sounds like you've got a good Plan B in the works though so all is not lost!

This is the 1st thing I see after not having checked in for a while? Sad events indeed but seeing what you can do with a model i have no worries you will prevail. Taping over a decal is always a tough proposition. That is my referred method for removing them if need be. I know it's too little too late now, next time, try using post-its and if you need more protection tape a tissue to the post it and drape it over the models. If ya gotta use that tape, stick it to the back of your hand a couple of time to remove even more of the sticky.
No promises but what sheet did the 5 come off of? I have a huge pile of sheet and will be happy to go thru them to see if there is a suitable replacement. Can you measure how tall the number is?

Luigi - Thanks anyway for trying mate, I appreciate the kindness and generosity! Bill - Yes, the Future had plenty of time to cure. It had endured plenty of oil dot weathering without so much as a hiccup. Fear not, good news approacheth! Leon - Certainly hope so mate!! Marc - Thanks for the pointers mate, I will definitely keep that in mind for next time! Truth be told I should have figured something like that would happen. I have heard of guys using tape to remove decals, but figured that was on neat decals only without any sealing in. Live and learn! Thanks also for your wonderful generosity, I love how we are all willing to help each other out, though most of us have never met, and probably never will. Says a lot for the quality of folks at MSC. Yet another reason why I love it here! Luckily Marc, I won't need to take you up on your kind offer, for it appears the modelling gods are smiling upon me this day! Read on..... Well folks, it appears that things have taken a turn for the better. It also appears I have too many decals. As I said in my previous post, I am a crappy brush painter (hence my current predicament), and so I decided to wade through my copious decal stash to see if, against all odds, i may have something vaguely close to a yellow 5 of similar appearance. So, with a sunken heart, and hopes low, I approached my decal stash... Yes. There are a lot. It didn't take too long until I came across something which was somewhere in the ballpark. Two pages in, actually... Ugh. Another CE sheet. Still bruising from the last one. Still, may not have much choice.... Not bad, not bad. Not quite right, but it's the right colour and it will do in a pinch. Feeling up. At least the brushes and RLM04 can stay where they are. As the search had only just begun, I figured there would be no harm in searching the rest of my stash for something a bit closer. After all, I had quite a few German decal sheets, surely there were some more yellow 5's in there somewhere. One folder down, nothing. On to folder two. First page. Front and center. Well, looky what we have here.... Yes. (I have this?) YES. (When did I get this??) YES!! Same. Freaking. Aircraft. (I have no idea where this came from). I'M BACK BABY!!!!!! (Yes, that's my ugly mug...) It appears that things have taken a turn for the better. It also appears I have too many decals. Cheers, Sam

Too many is a concept unknown to the modeller Glad you found a replacement, I thought I had the last one you found, instead I had bought another one (with Galland's bird markings).

Yo Sam, great news. As we all know though the modeling gods are a fickle bunch. Sometimes they toy with you. A little set back... a reprieve... then your hopes and dreams are once again dashed on the rocks as a thunderous roar of laughter emanates from the clouds. But if they really screw with you and you drill down through all your supply... I have that CE sheet. It’s yours if you need it. Know that they know you are backed up from here to Sunday maybe we have put the fear of… well… them... into the modeling gods and they will move on to the next poor soul. Just as long as it’s not me.

Luigi - Yes, on reflection I think you may be right. In fact, now that I think about it, when it comes to modelling too much is never enough!! Thanks for checking your stash by the way..... Marc - Yes, they are a filthy bunch of fickle bastiches indeed!! Thank you so much for the wonderfully generous offer, I am truly humbled. I am hoping I won't need to call on you, but it's nice to know the offer is there nonetheless.... Thanks for the support guys! Cheers, Sam

Woohoo! Great news indeed...as not only do you have the 5 replacement, you've got the tail numbers too instead of having to rig up something as a replacement. Nice!

Howdy folks! Sorry for the long time between drinks, but that pesky thing called life keeps getting in the way of my modelling!! Anyway, after a month of nothing in the update stakes, I thought I would show you how I got on with the decal issue from the previous installment. Ennyweigh, 'nuff jibba-jabba, on with the show! So, first thing I needed to do was get rid of the remainder of the half torn decals. So using some more of the offending painters tape (this time as a force for good) I got to work. This was the end result... So far so good! After touching up some paintwork covering the port side fuselage Balkenkruz, I gave the model a healthy dose of Future in preparation for "Take 2" in the decal stakes. So, on with the next bit. The Eagle Strike decals for the replacement 5's and tail numbers were simply magnificent! They went on beautifully and responded well to setting solution. They are gorgeously thin too. Once they were dried, I had trouble discerning the edge of the decal film! Lovely!! The CE decals on the other hand..... I used about 7 bucket loads of setting solution on each RAF roundel to get them to settle down, including slicing the decals to try and get the solution underneath. They eventually settled down (for the most part) but it was a LOT of work! To add insult to injury, the fuselage roundels were in 3 pieces, with the white section going down first. The result can be seen below... Ennyhoo, after the obligatory cursing and swearing, I finally goth the fuselage roundels sorted and a couple of flat coats down. Not too scruffy!!... Well then, it was finally time to unmask! HUZZAH!! The canopy came out quite nicely and the undercarriage bays look pretty smicko!! And here we have a shot of the gear, pretty much done and dusted and ready for installation..... So, as she was getting closer to completion, I thought what better way to procrastinate than to build a base for it!! I have a bunch of pre-cut and edged timber which I bought from Bunnings (our largest hardware chain here in Australia) which make great bases. I started off by painting the edges. For my groundwork I use a product called Tetrion. It is a water based filler in powder form, and is great for doing groundwork. Even for flat ground for aircraft, I will use some Tetrion, as it gives a natural unevenness to the groundwork. After laying down the Tetrion and letting it set for a while, I dug out the locations for the wheels and "extras". Once the Tetrion was dried, I brush painted the groundwork with Tamiya Red Brown in preparation for the static grass. While I was at it, I gave the 44 Gallon drum and Jerry can an undercoat of a suitable Model Master enamel in prep for the chipping I will do later. And here is the base in its current state. The ghastly green static grass is yet to be painted! I will airbrush it a few different shades of green to impart a more natural colour. The wheel chocks, drum and Jerry can all still need to be painted as well. The big board will eventually be a hand painted sign with the words..... well, you'll just have to wait and see!! And finally, to show you how close to the end we may be, here's a few snaps with the ol' girl parked in her final resting spot! Still a bit to go yet, but y'all get the idea!! Will do the final weathering on the 262 once she is attached to the base, as well as attach things like the wingtip lights, and aerials made from stretched sprue. Hopefully the next update we will be complete!! I need to have this finished for our July club meeting in about a week and a half, so you shouldn't have to wait another month for the next update! Stay tuned True Believers, more to come! Cheers, Sam

Nice to see this one come back around for another pass Sam! Take 2 on the decals came out very nice and the base looks like the perfect parking space for this captured bird.

Well folks, the ol' girl is finished! HUZZAH! Truth be told I had her done about a week and a half ago, just haven't had the time to get the photos up on the best site in the world (that's here, just in case yer wundrin'.... ) So wi'owt further waitin' around, here beez a whole buncha photos of the girl! Hope y'all likey!! Close up of the tail. Don't know that the oil dot weathering shows through too well here. It is very subtle in real life, so probably gets lost over the photos... My first crack at a weather beaten sign. Thanks heaps to T for his awesome advice, it was a big help! In hindsight, the light blue paint was probably not the best choice for the peeled paintwork, I think it blends too much into the sign itself. Oh well, live and learn... Close up of the crusty old timber wheel chocks. Nice.... Canopy and fuselage side. Canopy masked with Bare Metal Foil. Oil dot weathering shows through well on the wing. Rusty old "sign post".... Crusty old Jerry can. Just because.... Close up of weathering on wing. "New management" markings. Very happy with the end result, especially after the "hiccup". Engine cowl painted with Model Master Metalizer. There is also some very faint weathering on the grey cowl, but unfortunately it doesn't show through in the photos. So there you go! To be honest, I am a little disappointed with the quality of the photos. To me they appear a little washed out. I have yet to really experiment with my cameras settings so I may need to gin around a bit to get something I am happy with. Pity really, as it loses a bit of impact with these photos. Really does look better in real life! Might have to take some new ones and repost..... Ennyweigh, hope you all enjoy! Mods, could one of you please pinch some of the pix from here and get me into MoM before the clock runs down? Gotta be innit ta winnit right?? Cheers, Sam

Gentlemen, Thankyou so much for your very kind words! I really appreciate the sentiment, and I am honoured to receive praise from the likes of you fellas!! Well true believers, I have gone ahead and taken some more photos, this time with (believe it or not) my trusty Samsung Galaxy SIII mobile phone! It actually takes really good pix, and I think for the most part they came out better than my "proper" camera, my Panasonic Lumix DMZ-FZ8! TBH, I think it all comes down to the fact that I have no freakin' idea how to use either of them outside of the "Automatic" settings! I really don't think my photos will get much better until I start to experiment. Problem is, I have precious little free time, and when faced with the option of photographing models, or building models, the building wins out every time!! Ennyweigh, have a look at the pix and tell me what you think. Are they better, worse or about the same? Hopefully they show the ol' girl off a bit better. Enjoy..... Enjoy!

I think they're better, they show more of the subtlety you achieved with the finish for sure! Something you can do quick and easy that will help you take better pictures is use a light tent so you have uniform lighting, will help your camera 'see' better no matter which one you're using. Check out this link for a quick and cheap DIY way to make one. digital-photography-school.com/how-to-make-a-inexpensive-light-tent
