Good afternoon chaps, Okee Dokee! With the Elefant out of the way and sitting proudly in my cabinet I'm ready to start on the next build. At this rate I'll be lucky to build 4 models this year so I must up my game. I could have had that Elefant built, painted and weathered in less than half the time I took but only having weekends to work on and preferring to work for anything between 3-6 hours at a time meant it was always going to take a while. Being very busy at work and having to work a lot of weekend overtime also had a BIG impact but with the current unemployment levels as they are in the UK I won't moan about having a job and doing the work involved! So, as promised, I'm building my first proper Pz. IV (I built Dragon's earlier Brummbar which I believe based on a Pz. IV chassis) so I'm really looking forward to this build: I've decided that I'm going to build the '3./Pz.Rgt."Totenkopf",Pz.Gren.Div. Kharkov 1943'.
It has a simple Panzer Grey Basecoat and hollow, white outlined "332" numbering.
www.dragon-models.com/d-m-item.asp?pid=DRA6363I'll be building this nearly all OOB. I've bought a replacement RB Barrel but I don't want to use Friuls this time (if I can help it) as they are getting stupidly expensive and will try to make the Magic Tracks work instead. I've used them before and, like last time, want to make them so they can be assembled, fitted to the build, allowed to set and then removed for painting off the vehicle and for fitting later. I was going to be making the red numbered 'LAH' Pz. IV with a W/Wash over a DY base BUT I wanted a Pz. Grey basecoat so I opted for the Totenkopf version - I'll be adding a W/Wash to that and will be masking the white decals and using AK's worn effects to give a lightly worn whitewash effect - I don't want it too heavily chipped and worn away. There also seems to be a lot of ?'s re the red numbering and the DY basecoat of the LAH vehicle so I thought I'd keep it simple!
Good old Bill Plunk has built this kit too and, partly due to his blog, I've decided to go the same way as he did and use the '332' option with a w/wash. I've been through his own blog www.bpmodels.net/Model/Album/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24on the bpmodels website www.bpmodels.net/pages/BuildLogs.html and have picked out all the usual Dragon instruction errors and omissions and have pasted the important bits onto a 4 page word document to go with my build. Call me lazy or call me sensible but Bill tells me that is why his site is there, to aid guys in my position who don't have his knowledge re AFV's and what parts should and should not be fitted! I know it will help me a lot! Cheers Bill! Everything is ready to go and I'll se how time goes this afternoon (I have today off for Good Friday and have this weekend free and Easter Monday too so hope to make a good start between now and the end of Easter Monday! If I can get somewhere near section 7 (before I go back to work) where I'll get the chance to make up my tracks prior to fitting the Fenders then I'll be very happy! Update as soon as I have something worth updating - either tomorrow or Sunday! If anyone wants to share any fonts of knowledge with me re this build I'd be very greatful - markings, parts to omit or to include etc - anything! Thanks guys - have a great weekend and happy Easter Ben

Hey guys, Thanks for the genuine interest and I haven't even posted a photo yet! It means a lot and I'll try not to let you down! I was VERY pleased with my last couple of builds so have set the bar high if I want to maintain my recent standards (Dragons Zimmed Tiger I Ausf E and Zimmed Elephant). This is the kit to do it! I haven't done a full Whitewash build 'proper' before and have only dabbled with hairspray chipping. I want a pretty flat grey basecoat - nothing fancy - as I'm hoping to get a nice whitewash built up and with AK's 'Worn Effects' being used instead of their 'Heavy Chipping' Solution I'm hoping to get a nice mottled worn effect allowing the grey to just 'peep' through and I'll show higher wear on high impact areas around hatches etc where the crew would be constantly clambering. Bill's done all the hard work and on his blog he has highlighted a few mistakes and omissions on the instructions. I wouldn't have known about these little things he's mentioned - mainly parts that suddenly appear on the instructions but aren't shown being fitted on the instructions. He's also shown where parts that are on the sprues and should be on the build being omitted ENTIRELY from the instructions - he's mentioned where to drill holes and to fit the unmentioned parts. He's also used Tamiya 'Clear Green' to tint the armoured glass in the driver's vision port and around the Cupola - the effect is suble but effective and something I intend to do aswell. From there on in I'll tackle it as I think looks best and make it as unique as possible. Not much room for Stowage but I'm going to try one of them Swastika Aerial signal flags that I bought at last weekends show to drape over the rear engine deck. I hope I can get the Magics to assemble off the build then drape on the running gear and then be removed for weathering later. I've done it before with Dragon's Pz.I A so this should be easier (I hope)? I forgot to mention the RB MG barrel that goes up front to replace the kit part. They cost a couple of £'s and the main RB replacement barrel was a fiver I think? I'm going to order a Quickwheel mask too for all them darn wheels. I've got a couple of things to do this evening and first thing in the morning so I'll be making a start tomorrow lunchtime with an update and photos being posted this time tomorrow.
Again, thanks to Bill for taking the time to help his fellow modellers who lack knowledge of the real things! I'm really looking forward to this now (except them wheels - all 32 halves of them AND the 2 spares)! Finally, all my blogging work is to be posted on this forum now. Everywhere else is quiet it seems like a pointless excercise posting on them! This site has been a Godsend to scale Modellers! Thanks to everyone involved! Ben

Hi guys, As usual the standard 'Saturday Update'! First off - what a lovely kit. Really good fit of all parts so far and having had a chance to view the sprues out of their bags the detailing shown on the mouldings is excellent. Top job Dragon! Today I only put about three hours in but this was the running gear housing and little fiddly bits along the lower hull walls then onto the muffler which, as I remember from my old Brummbar build, is fiddly to say the least - or so I remember! So all the lower hull stuff is on ready to take some temporary fitted wheels (which I'll assemble tomorrow) as I want to get the Magic Tracks on and off before fitting the Fenders. The Muffler was pretty easy so I must be improving! Saying that I built that Brummbar not long after I started in the hobby so I can understand why I probably struggled back then! I've drilled the Muffler out as it needs it - the way the outlet fits leaves it looking very blocked as the pipe is very short. So, I've got everything sorted for the lower hull. Wheel and Glacis assembly tomorrow and hopefully Magic Tracks too. No rush though as I can always do the tracks on Easter Monday. I bought some clear green for the vision blocks too - thanks for the tip, Bill Sorry there's not much to show but every build has to start somewhere! Update tomorrow! Cheers guys, Ben

Nice start Ben. Thanks Leon! This afternoon I'm assembling the Glacis and wheels/suspension assemblies in preparation for the fitting of the Magic Tracks tomorrow. I'll be fitting the assembled and glued tracks tracks, letting them set in place and then removing them for painting and weathering off the vehicle later before refitting at the end. For you guys who have never used this method before you want a glue like Tamiya's Extra Thin Cement in the square glass bottle with green screw off lid. Make your run of tracks, lightly apply glue and leave for a few minutes - eventually you'll be able to lift them up in one whole piece and drape them around the running gear. Don't use too much glue because you DO NOT want the tracks to glue to stick to the wheels - remember you need to remove them again 24 hours after fitting. Also, remember that the tracks will shrink a bit so what looks like a nice saggy run now might look quite tight tomorrow! Finally, I know it's obvious but remember to leave the joining ends unglued! LOL! It's dead easy. I've only ever tried it with Tamiya Thin cement as that is the recognised method so I'm not sure how normal thick cement would work? Update later! Ben

Looks like you're making good use of the Easter time off Ben! Nice and clean so far, have fun with the tracks. I'm about to start the tracks now Bill, I got caught out by the leaf spring mounts and had to chop half of them off last night to put on the other side - AAGGGHHHHH! I suppose it is my first Pz.IV and the instructions threw me. I then realised that you covered that bit in your blog Bill and mentioned that I needed to be careful with the mounts! Here's hoping for better luck today. The springs repaired ok but the wheels aren't 100% aligned now Ben

You need to get those wheels aligned before you do the tracks Ben or you will have some major issues with them twisting/torquing when you assemble the Magic tracks. Sorry to hear you got caught on this one!

You need to get those wheels aligned before you do the tracks Ben or you will have some major issues with them twisting/torquing when you assemble the Magic tracks. Sorry to hear you got caught on this one! Hi guys, Bill - I've made a recovery from the brink I really wanted the Magic Tracks done last night so I had today to start on the Fenders so in my haste I overlooked this fairly important part of the assembly. When it became apparent that the Leaf Springs would not all face in the same direction I had to chop off the offending mountings and swap them around. The wheels are all aligned but a couple sit a touch higher ie not sitting flush with the ground so I'll sort that when it comes to fitting the wheels permanently - no biggie. At least the slots all line up to take the the guide horns so no twisting. Luckily I managed to eventually get this done okay and this afternoon I assembled the two Magic Track runs. I prefer to make then straight run that fits between the bottoms of the road wheels (I make a length that runs from 6 o'clock on the front wheel to 6 o'clock on the back. I then make the rest up, cover with Tamiya Thin Cement and when set enough I simply join the start of the run to the straight run under the front road wheel and then lift the run over and drop onto the return rollers and round the back of the return rollers - joining up with the back end of the flat run already in place under the road wheels. I leave this end unglued and just tape it as I'll remove them tomorrow but I want them in place whilst they shrink. I used 99 links per run I think? So, back to work tomorrow which means I'll be starting again next weekend on the Fenders and top deck. PHOTOS:
Repairs done and suspension sorted:
Wheels on:
Magic Tracks being assembled - I use a piece of thick Plasticard with two straight edges cut from each side and set to the right width glued back onto the board to ensure my run is 100% straight (this is the one I use for my Pz.III/Pz.IV Magic Tracks):
Tracks on - they'll probably need some adjustment once the links have shrunk up and the tup runs will need a dab of cement to hold the top run down:
Here's where the Idler is supposed to push onto piece A40 and the Idler had no hole and had to be drilled out!
After the Suspension and Idlers little scares all is looking ok again thank God! Looking forward to next weekend! Please ignore the rough looking tracks and the poor track photos. The Tracks were photo'd with my phone camera and the tracks won't look 100% until they are well stuck in place Thanks guys, Have a good week!
Ben

Glad to see you fixed the idler issue, looking good Ben. Cheers guys, An Idler with a hole missing and a BIG problem with the Suspension but it's all sorted now and the Magic tracks turned out just great I hadn't assembled Magics for about a year so wasn't sure how they'd turn out BUT everything seems to be perfecto now so onwards and upwards. I'll have to keep a close eye on the instructions and Bills Blog as I don't think I can handle a BIG disaster! LOL! When it slowly dawned on me what I'd done with the Suspension mounts my stomach turned to water - you know the feeling you get as you realise you've done something VERY wrong Luckily it was fairly easily sorted. Looking forward to the next few steps this weekend as they should be fun (engine deck and lower hull tub side walls). Ben

Found you! Hardest part is over so everything will be fun from now on. Tracks look good... bet you are missing Friuls? Hi lads, Gary - thanks for dropping by it feels VERY good to get them tracks out of the way! Andy - yep, everything WILL be fun from now on! Now the tedious bits are out the way like the running gear and suspension etc, clean up and assembly of 36 wheel halves (inc. the two spares) and assembling the two 100 link lengths of Magic Tracks is done it looks like a fun build now. I messed up the Suspension so badly it was looking like it was going to take half a tube of CA and a roll of duct tape to sort it out but the suspension arms came off easy enough and when cleaned up again they glued on quite nicely so it could have been a LOT worse. I'm VERY glad I stuck with her! I love Friuls but HATE assembling them - even more so than wheels! It usually takes me a good 2-3 hours to assemble a good run of Friuls. The Magics took less than an hour to assemble and to fit to shape (an hour on each side) so I'm really glad to have used them this time. I've decided that now Friuls (and kits) have become so expensive I'm only going to use Friuls on my best builds. This is classed as a normal OOB build in my eyes 9apart from the cheap RB barrel) - my next build, the Dragon 6633 StuG G Late - will have all the extras so I'm definately slapping Friuls on that one. I'm actually quite keen on fully assembling the Shurzen on that build too as I haven't got a full 'Schurzen' build in my cabinet. It would make a nice addition to my StuG collection! They look really good - I saw the exact same kit assembled with full Shurzen on painted in a plain DY scheme and I was blown away by it. The guy who built it said they were easy to do too. Obviously it's been a busy week at work as usual but I have the good fortune of not having been put on the overtime rota this weekend I'm hoping to get the entire top deck in place along with the Fenders leaving a nice (ahem) 'simple' turret assembly for next weekend. All tools will be painted off the vehicle and I reckon if the build turns out really well a scenic base will be in order too. Update tomorrow chaps, Ben

Hi guys, Well, what a really enjoyable day it's been today! For those of you who aren't from the UK and don't follow British Horse Racing today was the day of the 'Grand National' at Aintree. They call this the 'housewifes race' as it's the one race that people who would never normally place a bet do so (like me - I'm too tight to gamble)! I spred £20 over a few good horses but the actual winner was a 66/1 rank outsider! Typical! Ahh well, there's always the National Lottery that's on in a minute. I did pick up a couple of brand new stupidly cheap brand new books in a sale so it was a good morning all round. So, onto the build. First off, BIG TIME thanks to Bill Plunk as his blog on his own site has really helped me this afternoon and has prevented me from making a couple of silly errors. See my photos below, Bill. I'm unsure about these hatches and the padlock you mention (parts A57)? The tracks assembled fine last week and over the week have tightened up nicely. Today I've concentrated on the upper hull assembly and managed to get a stack of stuff done - tomorrow I'll be able to add some extras like the Bosch light, antennae trough and get the tools removed from the sprues and cleaned up. I'll be painting the tools much later on after the main paint job and want to get the turret done next weekend BUT there's no reason that I can't assemble the RB Barrel/Breech so it's ready to drop onto the turret next weekend. The two rear engine hatches are on as are the driver and R/O hatches. I've managed to make the side windows operational and have exposed the clear front glass painted from behind with Tamiya Clear Green - the effect of the clear green is brilliant. Finally, I was going to fit the PE sections under the Air intakes at the rear but the plastic ones look fine and saved a lot of time and hassle. Here's a few Photos - there's the one for you below btw Bill:
Tracks ready to go:
Upper hull all sorted:
Everything else - ready to go:
Bill - here are the hatches, where do I put them two pieces for the locks you mention:
My latest book purchase #1 - was £20 reduced to £5 (hardback - lots of superb reference photos):
My latest book purchase #2 - was £25 reduced to £5 (Hardback - I love Game of Thrones)
After last weeks horror show with the suspension I've been looking at other Pz.IV's and am very interested in both the very early short barreled version and the Ausf. F2(G) - I haven't done a DAK build before so I'm probably going to end up going for that later this year - Dragons version looks brilliant. Update tomorrow! Ben

Great update... looking clean! Noticed its MG unique shape which I haven't seen before. How unusual! Hi Andy, I'm glad you noticed that barrel too matey. I actually bought an RB upgrade alongside the main gun barrel but it's way out. The MG barrel I bought was an MG34 one with perforated cooling jacket. Perhaps someone could tell me what I should have bought! The one I bought is RB35B49? What one should I have got? Anyway - the build is going good. I've got some interesting bits of assembly work coming up tomorrow so she should start looking good tomorrow. Cheers buddy, Ben

Making good progress on this one Ben! I'm a big Game of Thrones fan myself...just finished up watching Season 2 on Blu-ray with my wife in fact. As for your question on the locking tabs for the hull hatches (A57), they need go above and to the left (when looking at your pic below) of the two small recessed screws to line up with the matching little tab on the hull to create the other half of the pair that a padlock would then slip through.

Looking good Ben.
If you can get the PZ IV ausf E that is an awesome kit with articulating suspension. I have the F2 (shelf queen) and hope to get her done some time. The Late H version is also very nice and comes with spare tracks (Russian T34), and the upgunned D version is also loaded with extra parts. These aextras come in handy if you have an older Dragon IV kit.
