Hi guys This is a build I started a few weeks ago, something new for me. I've never tackled an auto before so this should be interesting! I added a few extras, like the leads and hoses in the engine bay, a dent in the door and ripped seats. I think you can see where this is going! This is where I'm at, just the primer so far. As you may have guessed this will be a rust bucket if all goes well. I've been been brushing up on my techniques, here are some test pieces: Thanks for having a look, see you again soon! Cheers JT

Many thanks guys for the comments! Hi Chris, this will be a running rust bucket, kinda road worthy but showing it's age.
Cheers JT

Hi folks, I've finally put paint on this! I got the idea for this new chipping technique from Marc Reusser who used hairspray with it, and I developed it a bit further so that hairspray is not needed. All paint used is Tamiya acrylics thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner. First is a coat of dark rust, which was then protected with a good layer of dullcote. This was allowed to cure for a couple of days. Then lighter rust tones were airbrushed one over the other, then a layer of white, then some final yellow and blue. This was allowed to cure for at least 3 hours. Then one part water was mixed with one part windex, and this was carefully scrubbed over parts of the paint with a paint brush. Some water was kept handy to douse the paint in case the eating of the surface got away from me. The effect I'm after is one of old deteriorated paint, oxidised and broken down by the sun and weather until rust begins to show through; so not really 'chipping'. Some scratches were carefully added with a scalpel or some fine sandpaper as well. So that's how it stands at present, hope you like it! Cheers JT

Windex is a glass cleaner. One of its main ingredients is isopropyl alcohol. Check your local store for glass cleaners, they are cheap enough to give them a try.

Many thanks guys for your replies!
Yes windex is a glass cleaner, it's main ingredients are: Isopropanal, 2-Butoxethanol, Ethylene, Water, and Ammonia.
I don't know if other products would work, but give it a try on a test piece. The ideal thing would be a liquid you could dilute with water, which slowly eats the dried acrylic paint, at a rate that can be controlled and easily curtailed with just water.
Cheers JT

Great technique and stunning result, John. No hairspray involved, am I right?
Windex is Vetril in italy and I have plenty of it, as I use it to dilute vallejo/andrea paints when I paint figures.

Hi Guys! Luigi, yep no hairspray used on this. The Windex breaks down the paint by itself, that's why the Dullcote is used over a dark basecoat to stop it going right through to plastic. I've found Dullcote to be much more resistant to Windex than Tamiya acrylics. Thanks a lot Nate and Boots! Carrying on with the Mini, the interior and motor have some paint: Most of these were painted by hand with Vallejo Model Color paints, followed by a light airbrush filter of Tamiya Buff to simulate fading and dust. Then oil paints were mixed with white spirit and applied as washes. Cheers JT

Very nice tip, it reminds me of Mike Rinaldi's Laquer thinner drybrush but without the risk involved in using such a powerful solvent.
