Hey guys, Dupes and I were comparing notes a few weeks ago about kits that we have in common in our stashes (considering the size of his stash, it is pretty much everything I've got!). We also got talking about how great the duels that Scratchmod and T (and which now seem to be a growing tradition here) have done are. So we hit on the idea to do our own little face off. Ours will be similar to the format of those who have preceded us - we'll each build the same vehicle, both with a kit from the same company (in this case, older kits, too), and we will both put our own spin on it. The subject of this one will be the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind. Although there are obviously newer kits on the market, both of us will take on one of the old Tamiya offerings. I'll let dupes speak for himself, but my offering will consist of the following: Tamiya kit 35185: Flakpanzer IV Griffon Models 2cm Flak 38 barrels Tristar Pz IV tracks  Our plan is to kick this thing off on Friday 1 June. Knowing dupes, he'll have his build done by Monday and I'll get mine done around Christmas!  |

Wicked!! Boyd and Dupes having at it with the Wirbelwind...and Tamy's to boot!! I like this a lot!! Watching two put their own "spin" to the kit is big fun!! I have yet to have at one of these!!! I know you guys will do this justice!! No worries on the time frame BTW...make sure Marc paints it and it doesn't end up on the shelf with all those nice naked models!!!

FOUR BARRELS OF FURY...I love it! #1 in a neverending series of face-offs, I'm sure.  My opening pic won't be much different - fairly similar setup to Boyd's. Tamiya 35233 Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind (the newer tooling) Eduard 35278 PE set Tracks - TBD. I've got the same Tristars kicking around (which I've used before, and like a lot), although I may be able to scrounge some Magic Tracks, and maybe even Fruilis if the build looks promising enough. Barrels - kit supplied! Haven't had any luck finding a set of aftermarket ones, and it's build time. Just have to drill them out. Other - who knows what else I can scrounge up. Will depend what I can find for reference pics? All I know is that from everything I've seen so far, copious amounts of foliage were in use on these babies later in the war. Done by Monday? Hmmm. That might be pushing it a bit between the Eduard etch set, and the fact that the weather which has been stuck in the low-to-mid-50s here for about two months is just about to jump straight into the 80's.  Gotta get the garden in and pile on some miles on my bike! |

LOL...knew that would stir the pot!!! I seen a few you painted...there is hope!!  You might have to source out one or two of the others just to get them colored!! Great...now they will end up on my doorstep!!  Still waiting on the digital shots of that coning tower!! "Measurements"!! Could have had that together already!!!  |

T You laugh, but I showed dupes a pic I found of a Wirbelwind buried in the middle of a field, covered all in straw. Only the muzzles were sticking out... no painting required!! |

I've got a DML Wirbelwind sitting in my basement...it's in a sort of "knocked out" state. Or at least that's what I'm saying for the moment lol

Mine are dull...need to swap out before I crack into this baby. Will be sure to get a pre-start shot up tonight. Had an employee quit this morning, pretty stressful day. I may have to take out my frustrations with a sanding stick on the "1000 Roadwheels"! |

I could have that airbrush going all day and I'd be thrilled. It's worrying about what comes after that that kills my motivation EVERY TIME. Despite a shelf full of reference books, WIP threads to follow, how-to DVDs, I still don't have the confidence to tackle every project the way I'd like to once I get to the final (and really, most important) stage. The part where it becomes "art".  |

Not that bad fellas! Biggest problem with weathering is knowing when to put the reigns on for your taste. This is a preference call!! Light, heavy, insane...all the same. Always remember the word "layers". Each layer enhances the ones before as do the next will enhance that one. The protective clear coat is your friend!! Embrace it! Often a clear coat can slightly change the appearance of what you have done. Lighter finish on the painting is good to remember as everything will darken with weathering. And most everything can be undone or corrected as you go. Hence part of the "layers" reference. Practice practice practice! LOL!! Only way!! Problem is the infectious factor...once you start you will not want to stop!!! |
