Hahaha, yes, Boots is a spot-on match for Tamiya "sprue orange"!
Passed out before getting my update out last night, so it looks like tonight's will have to be jumbo-sized, as I got a LOT done.
Keep up Mr.Brown!

In an attempt to add a good bit more detail to the Flak 38 (and rectify my no-aftermarket barrels situation), I decided to throw together a kit of Trumpeter's...looks great, but doesn't FIT! Haven't figured out if the mounts are just different, or the dimensions on one or the other (Trumpy vs Tamiya) is off a smidge. So back to the drawing board, will have to use the Tamiya Flakvierling with some drilled-out barrels and the few Eduard enhancements.
Also spent a bit of time playing around with the Tamiya figs - want to see how they look put together before I go nuts painting up 3 or 4 guys. The quality is pretty typical mid-90's Tamiya fig quality. A bit mushy with not the best faces. We'll see.
So where I'm at right now - assembling the Tamiya Quad to see if there's any way to shoehorn it into the Wirbelwind turret with the turret closed, or if I have to paint it, install it, and then complete the turret around it (as shown in the instructions). Wicked pain in the ass if that's the case. Sure hope it fits!

Sounds like a few quandaries going on here Dupes . You cant find any a.m. 20mm barrels for the Flak 38 ?

Alright fellas, Another update: I set out to knock out the Tristar indylink tracks. The thing is, they kinda suck. Well, that's not true. They are nice tracks and they link together with a really positive attachment. However, the set of links that I have are a bit of a mess - there is quite a bit of flash on each one, pretty much any open space on the link has flash covering it. A big PITA to clean up. Add to that the realization that the Tamiya sprockets are a bit too wide (thank goodness I found out now). So, I needed to mix it up a bit. So, I knocked out the roadwheels, sprockets, idlers, etc: Then I turned my attention to the hull and realized that the kit does show its age a bit. Now, I have no intention of doing a whole lot of correcting for any inaccurate details on this kit (I'm sure there are plenty), but there are a few things I could not ignore, like this: This is where the rear plate attaches to the upper hull... yeah... kinda gotta do something about that, so... Then a bit of putty and... And then I looked at the attachment of the rear hull to the lower hull... SONOFABIH!!!

Wow, that's some decidedly "un-Tamiya" fit right there. Maybe that's why they re-tooled?
Can definitely tell there's a difference in the age of the plastic as well. Yours is the far shinier, oilier mix, where I've got the "standard" buttery orange stuff they're still using now. Wonder what kit number they switched formulas on?
Taking some pics now, hope to get them up tonight.

Sorry for the shoddy pic, but if I was going to get a shot in tonight, I didn't have time to lug this all down to the photo booth and make it look all pretty. All of the kit-supplied figs are together. Amazingly enough, they fit the Trumpeter Flak 38 kit really well (for future reference)! That one dude in the not-winter clothing must be from the generic Pz. IV sprue. Spare tracks have been drilled out - assuming I don't replace them with whatever I use to shoe this monster. Next I have to finish up the Tamiya Flak gun to figure out if I can wedge it into the assembled turret, or if I have to build the turret around the gun (god I hope not). Etchy-type updates next.

Dupes , The Flak 38 looks pretty good . Be nice if it fits . That Flak DOES look pretty good! Unfortunately, that's the Trumpeter one which doesn't fit...going to be saved for a future project. Will have to stick with the Tamiya offering and hope I can spruce it up a bit.

Will have to stick with the Tamiya offering and hope I can spruce it up a bit. If you are most concerned about the barrels, and the detail is better on that Trumpy Flak, could you just harvest the barrels from that and then source an AM set later for the Trumpy? Alternatively, don't you have the Great Wall Flak in the stash? Doesn't that come with a set of metal barrels?

Great Wall - I've got Flak 43s and Nebelwerfers, but no Quads (do they make one?). Tried "harvesting" the barrels (hah) from the Trumpy kit, but they didn't fit so good. That, and then I have a Trumpy kit with no barrels!

Boyd and Dupes, you're making good progress...despite your respective trials along the way. That is one nasty fit issue with the idler mounts!

Take 2 I had typed out a witty, clever, humorous, and thoroughly entertaining summary of today's work, but got an error when I tried to post it, so now you get the readers digest abridged version: Finished the upper hull: Added brass-wire springs: Started the gun: Next up, the PE set for the guns and gun barrels: I swear to god if I get another posting error for this one, my next post will be in crayon...
