Thats some nice ground work Boyd! Put about 3 or 4 more guys watching the guy with the shovel and it would be like the Indiana highway Dept!
Nice work Dupes! Can't wait to see it all painted up!

Put about 3 or 4 more guys watching the guy with the shovel and it would be like the Indiana highway Dept! Must be contagious.....Always see guys here in Texas standing around BSing and one dude doin all the work. Must be a contract thing. Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians!

Paint? Got paint! Used the new-ish AK Interactive dark yellow primer. It sprays alright (a bit thick, with not great coverage - takes many coats), hopefully super durable...it is primer, right? The one thing I'm wondering about is the color. Isn't it too green? I don't mind it not looking like Tamiya XF-60 (it's nice to have a bit of variation now and then), but it just seems a bit excessive. Opinions?

If the general consensus is that it looks like a "passable" dunkelgelb then I shall press on with some camo!

Looks fine to me, are you going to lighten panels etc before camo?

See, that's the thing - as far as I know, this stuff isn't compatible with any other acrylics, so I can't just add some white to the base. Would have to mix up a lighter shade and hope that I eyeballed something close (not my strong suit).

Dupes
It looks good. I do think (maybe because of the pics) that the panels need some sort of attention. Could you lighten things up with color from another line (Tamiya maybe) or will that cause some funky interaction with the base color??

Lookin nice brother Dupes! Ill 2nd your thought on it lookin a bit greenish, but hey....its primer! Your gonna base color over it anyhow arent ya? I also had a bit of a learning curve with AK paint (CM set). While i got the hang of it....sorta, it did dry very smooth and durable IMO and i quite like the results even if it were a bit iffy on the AB application.

I CAN do that...I'm just worried about getting the color right. What I think I'm going to try is to mix some AK paint in with the primer to lighten it up a bit and give it a test shot on some scrap sprue to make sure it'll blend properly. If it works, camo after!

I think that's the best plan Dupes. As it looks right now from your photos on my monitor, the color has a definite greenish tint to it that won't look right IMHO integrated into a camo pattern as-is. Especially when you take into account that weathering typically darkens a finish.
I also can see what you mean about the coverage issue. There's still kit styrene plastic color showing through in different places that's also giving it an unusual color tone.

Alright. I think the easiest thing for me to do is to just basecoat it (again) with a proper color. I think one of the AK sets (german war color or late war paint) I picked up recently might have something that would work.

Base coat has been sprayed. Took the dunkelgelb from AK's "German War Colors" and applied it mostly to the centers of all of the panels for a modulation-ish type finish. Looks much more correct color-wise to me at this point.

Oh yes, definitely "more better" when I look at both pics.
Ready for camo! Want to try some of the other AK colors, but I'm going to have to figure out a thinning ratio that will work out - if I can't freehand them without a bunch of spatter, I'll have to stick with the ever-reliable Tamiya acrylics.

YEAH! That looks much better. Breaks up the monotony of the base coat really well.
Did you have a specific cammo in mind or are you just winging it?

There ya go!!! That does look nice bro. Dupes, If i remember properly, and i may have to revisit my Pz.IV F2G build to be sure, but im thinkin i udes 91% Iso Alcohol with a bit of thr AK thinner to get better results. Ill double check and see, but i did have to add to the AK paint & Thinner to get the most out of it i could. There thinner just didnt perform like i thought it should. Ill go find what i did and let ya know. Hard to beat Tamiya aint it!

Yeah, if Tamiya would only get a bit more creative with their paint colors, I wouldn't use anything else...EVER! If you don't mind checking to see what you did to get the AK stuff to spray all friendly-like Gary it's be highly appreciated.

I found it right off. This is a comment i made right after doin the German Grey AK CM set: "Thanks Dan, i appreciate it. Heres my initial opinion havin only used this first time. All four colors would not spray straight out of the bottle on low pressure but not alot better on high either...too splattery. I thinned with the AK thinner and it got somewhat better but not as good as i thought they should and the needle clogged from time to time. At this point (on the initial Dark and Base coats) im not satisfied, in fact disappointed. So on the next coat (highlight) i decided to try 91% Iso Alcohol to thin and BAM....there was the answer. I added Alcohol in aprox. 70/30 paint to alcohol on about 15psi. spraying pressure and finished it out and im happy with the results. Dont waste your money on their thinner as it smells just like alcohol but doesnt perform even close to the 91% i used." The Thread pg: modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/5025/pz-iv-f2-finished?page=6I hope thats useful bro. I LOVE TAMIYA!!!

Gary - good call on the alcohol thinner! I wouldn't have guessed that the AK stuff responds as well to it as Tamiya. On daddy daycare this afternoon, got the little monster to take a nap for an hour and came up with this: I actually ended up thinning it a bit more - probably to 60/40 as it kept separating in the brush - and I think next time I would probably start at 50/50 to see how well it handles. Brown going on tonight!
