Believe it or not, that area was added to protect the base of the rotating turret. Without that block there, a well placed shot could jam the turret at a minimum or do much worse depending on the size of the round involved. It's not an extension of the compartment below...although I bet the crew would've appreciated a little more room in there regardless. Wild Bill 76
Its good to have someone in the know about the little changes, gaining knowledge about history is one of the things I love about building AFV models. I have to say that is one thick block.
BonesIt wasn't mentioned here, but that block was made out of concrete, not steel.

Dicky, you and Ceebee are trying to make me nervous? So many nice pics of nice tanks, so close to where I live, yet too far to get there easily

Bullardino - Sardinia? The weather there must be absolutely horrible. Neat build! Are those the kit tracks that end up workable like that?

Bullardino - Sardinia? The weather there must be absolutely horrible. Yep, that's why I'm going to spend the whole day at the beach And that's the reason I'll look for better weather the next week in Belgium

Been flipping through the TankArt #2 book and and am amazed at what Mike did with his Char. I am sure this one will be just as impressive.
