Got the wings mounted tonight. Geez, what a bear. Had trouble getting the center underside to seat with the fuselage with solvents (it just kept lifting up), so I finally had to blunt-force it with CA and accelerator. The wings themselves sat naturally with not-insignificant gaps in the wingroots. And in this position they also aligned poorly at the wingtips. So I taped the things into place over the barrel of the fuselage and used MEK to weld the wingtips, then the wingroots, then the leading and trailing edges. This worked out pretty well, believe it or not. Also took one shot with the gear struts test-mounted. Nice, positive fit!

Had some eyestrain-inducing fun with PE and wire last night. And some brain-numbing cleanup of ejector pin craters on the Hayate's gear struts. One thing that I love about the Ki-84? The gear bays, gear struts and wheels are all the same color as the fuselage underside! So much less masking!

Great work Doogs, undercart is a kit in itself by the looks of things .
The whole airframe has a resemblance to an Fw190. Is the the aircraft that FW helped the Japanese fit the radial engine too?

Finished dressing the gear bays last night. The Eduard PE appliques really help provide some more visual interest to what, on the kit, are straight, unadorned plastic walls. I ended up ditching the "wiring" Eduard included and went with some .3mm lead wire instead. It's a bit messier, but oh well. Hoping to wrap up main construction tonight.

Yeah I think it looks kind of like a cross between a Fw 190 and a P-47. The Ha-45 Homare engine in the Frank is actually a development of the Ha-25 Sakae (which powered, among others, the Zero), itself based on the French Gnome-Rhone 14K Mistral Major. I believe the aircraft you're thinking of is the Ki-100, which took the Ki-61 airframe and adapted it from a DB-licensed inline to a radial.

Cleanup complete. Moving on to masking and such ahead of paint. Fortunately the only thing I really need to mask on the Hayate is the cockpit (and canopy). Of course...I still need to sort how I'm going to paint this thing. Between the chipping and masking I'm a bit freaked out! One thing I love about Hasegawa kits is the quality of the plastic. It polishes up like nobody's business.

Painting - NMF chipping coat Finally throwing paint around! I started with decanted Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver. As a metalizer paint, I'm not entirely sold, but as a bulletproof primer, this stuff is greatness. After the first coat, I noticed that I had some more seam work to do. Putty, sand, polish, AS-12 re-application, then I sprayed a coat of Alclad Duralinum and misted it with a very light coat of Alclad Airframe Aluminum. Tonight I'll be overseeing some chipping prep and spraying the wing leading edges and home defense bandaids. Depending on how quickly things set up, I may be tempted to tackle the hinomarus as well.

And now, we paint! First thing's first. With the masking of all the home defense bandages, I had to go back and cover over any showing white/yellow/etc with Alclad. Done. Next, I used liquid frisket (ammonia and latex, basically) to mask the chipping. I've been a big fan of using a uniform black base coat on recent builds, but I'm going to give some layered shading at try here. First up, black on the panel lines. Now to start filling in color. My plan is to use a lot of different-but-vaguely-similar colors (Nakajima IJN Green, RLM 70, Navy Blue and so on) to put a lot of tonal variation into the surface. This way, when the Nakajima Dark Green goes down, it'll have a lot of depth in it. I only got to the IJN Green tonight... More to come!

Pushed further last night, dirtying up the top shade with heavily thinned black, dark gray and navy blue. On the underside, the Gray-Green is about 85% complete.
