Bruce, thanks bud Bill, Sir, thanks for that! ^^ Andy, you're so kind mate . I agree, I was glad to have it back at the bench too...hope I can finally manage to finish the scene this year (still need to sculpt those two figs...so far I have only done the boots on one guy lol) So, assembly of the StuG...I went slow...and tried to remain as calm as possible and managed to glue the fighting compartment, fenders and engine deck in place. It's quite a tight fight and it doesn't fit too well in places. Not 100% happy with that, but luckily not too much would be noticed (unless by very critical persons up close...lucky me I don't participate in modelling contests at shows anymore these days...angel 2) One cock up happened though, when I glued the gun barrel in place I noticed I didn't add it properly...the muzzle brake ended up not sitting 100% correctly. Big bummer so I decided to add a muzzle brake cover. After three sculpting sessions of which two were utter fails, I managed to achieve a reasonable result. It's not completely what I wanted but it'll have to do. During the build stage I also sculpted a small tarp to fit between the gunt mantlet and fighting compartment, luckily that was completely as I wanted it teeth 2 As for markings...there aren't any photos of the sides of these StuGs so I did my own thing. I decided to use some Archer Fine Transfers Balkenkreuz transfers on each side of the fighting compartment. No numbers though... Well, next step is the most exciting one so far: the whitewash ^^ Cheers

Nice save on the muzzle brake cover and the mantlet tarp is a nice touch to go with the whitewash winter scenario.

The muzzle brake cover looks perfect, it 'hangs' very realistic. your spraywork looks mighty fine too. The zim pops out just enough, spot on I'd say.

A little FYI, Wouts. There were hooks on the back of the mantlet and front of the superstructure made specifically for the weather cover. You can see them in this picture (one of the mantlet ones is missing). There were bars sewn into the front and rear of the covers that slipped on to the hooks. Of course, the original covers often got lost or damaged. They would be replaced by anything the crew could find to keep the weather out leading to a lot of variations, such as what you depict.

Very interesting photo there Bob, thanks for that ^^ And today a next session. Whitewash, yeah baby! I sprayed two coats of hairspray on the StuG, followed by Tamiya Flat White thinned with water. After that the fun could begin! Cheers

Wouts!!!
Sincere apologies but I've somehow managed to miss a load of updates on this!!
I'm glad I've found it though as it's looking very, nice indeed. A lovely base job, nice paint job and a great save with the muzzle cover.
Yet more inspiration for my modest little builds!!
Keep it up.
Andrew.

Guy, thanks bud...well haven't started the Dark Wash just yet, but a first pinwash has appeared Mister Steinman, thanks Andrew, no worries, too much going on on site ey ^^. Glad you like it, thanks! Hey Andy, thanks, 'nuff said LOL So, another update A while ago I bought Ushi van der Rosten's track burnishing fluid (European variation of Blacken-it). I had never tried so this would be a first. Exciting! I put the tracks in a bath consisting out of water and vinager to degrease the tracks, I let it sit over night. This morning I started blackening the tracks. First you pour the burnishing fluid in a small box and add an equal amount of tapwater. Then I put one trackrun in it, you can immediately see the fluid starting to work. I use an old toothbrush to rub on the trackrun to elimate airbubbels which can disturb the burnishing process When the tracks are dark enough I rinsed them with tapwater to stop the process. Really a very neat result I was a bit afraid using the fluid since it's a chemical, but things worked out fine, and a very big plus: it doesn't have a strong smell! After that I decided to add a first pinwash to the StuG to make the details pop out again. Perfect for a winter subject is Migs' Cold Grey wash I removed the residu of the pinwash after a couple of minutes, I took a flat brush and removed it using gentle strokes. The advantage of this is that the Cold Grey Wash acts as a filter at the same time. You can see this a bit on the front of the StuG I some places I removed a bit too much of the wash, but no worries, another pinwash using a dark color will follow... Cheers

Well done Wout. So the track burnishing stuff works well ? I heard of poor results of other brands. Ushi's works ?
Great to see the surface change by the update. Keeps looking better and better.

Great paint work there, Wouter. The pin wash really did it's job.
I love Blacken It, though it seems a number of people have issues with it because of the toxic chemicals in it.

Tobias: thanks mate Mark, glad you're here bud, and plenty of beer so grab a seat Hi Leon, thanks chap Dogfish: wowzer to you too lad, thanks Well done Wout. So the track burnishing stuff works well ? I heard of poor results of other brands. Ushi's works ? Great to see the surface change by the update. Keeps looking better and better. Glad you like it Guy, thanks. And yeah it works. I think key to make it work is degrease the tracks properly. Alexander from Ushi made a video on how to use it and he suggested using water and vinager in stead of using diswashing soap. also, I never use ca glue and that's a big plus too since glue marks evidently will make that areas where the glue is won't be burnished. Basically the Ushi stuff is the same as the one AK had (Ushi produced it a while for them, but they went seperate ways) and it works out fine. I also had a set of Panther Friuls ready to treat with the same batch of liquid, but I had the impression that burnishing liquid was working slower after I had treated two links already. Anyway, if you keep working the tracks with an old teethbrush to remove the airbubbles from the tracks it gives you a great result. I sure will use it in the future again Bob, just missed you there, thanks mate, glad you like it. Well I was a bit afraid of the toxic nature of the liquid, but no odors whatsoever. And although I used gloves, I spilled some on my skin but no reactions. Is the Blacken-it smelly stuff or odorless as well? Cheers

No odors that I can detect, but due to the acidy nature of the chemicals I try not to get my nose too close to the pan when I use it.
