Was Wittman a 38(t) driver early in the war? I don't believe so but I think his twin brother was. Jeff

So maybe he wasn't (I do have some Alpine heads) but Otto Carius did some time in a 38(t)... "The well-known German tank commander Otto Carius, who was credited with over 150 'kills' described the following action in a 38(t) in July 8, 1941: It happened like greased lightning. A hit against our tank, a metallic crack, the scream of a comrade, and that was all there was! A large piece of armour plating had been penetrated next to the radio operator's seat. No one had to tell us to get out. Not until I had run my hand across my face while crawling in the ditch next to the road did I discover that they had also got me. Our radio operator had lost his left arm. We cursed the brittle and inelastic Czech steel that gave the Russian 47mm anti-tank gun so little trouble. The pieces of our own armour plating and assembly bolts caused considerably more damage than the shrapnel of the round itself."(from Wikipedia) But hey guys... what is THIS version? Cutting some parts out right now and keeping track of some measurements. Gotta dig out a gearbox for it! Jeff

Haha...gotcha. Replace his head and no one will be the wiser!
Don't recognize that variant. Weird. Some pretty substantial differences.

Jeff,
At the time of the Czech annexation in 1938 only the very first Ausf A's had been produced and were in service with the Czech army. Those of course were all commandeered by the Germans into their Panzer divisions along with all the other subsequent 38(t) production runs. Some tanks did serve in Slovak units though while fighting with German armies on the Eastern Front. The 38(t) gun-tank was withdrawn as a front-line vehicle in German units in 1942 for obvious reasons however you still saw some of the other Axis armies (Romanian, Hungarian) still using them in some cases up until 1943.
As for the vehicle pic you posted, I'm not 100% certain but I think that's one of the Swedish export versions that they built under license.

Not much in the way of updates today, eh fellas? Here's what I've got: Moving along trying to deal with all of the ill-fitting flash-ridden sink-holed parts that Maquette felt fit to package up. Was going to try to swap out some fenders from a Tamiya Marder III, but in each of their kits the fenders are cut shorter than in the "standard" 38(t) due to the superstructure build ups...so no luck there. Stuck with the thick kit parts with PE brackets. The fit tolerance is so thin over the tracks that I'm not sure if I'll be able to feed them in after the fact without knocking the fenders off - I may have to paint some things in subassemblies and assemble after. Haven't thought that part out completely yet. More to come!

As for the vehicle pic you posted, I'm not 100% certain but I think that's one of the Swedish export versions that they built under license. I did some searching and found a reference to it being called a "CSR LT Vz.38 2.PNG". Any other info on it is quite sparse. It may be an early prototype or experimental version... or, it might be an export version as Bill suggests (though all the Swedish ones I saw had the box style mantlet). Interesting variant, to say the least.

Looking good Dupes!! Bet you're half way through the painting by now!! LOL!! I have been forcing myself to spend less time on the PC and more time on what matters!! In this case it is the Santa-fication of the house! The assault is slated for T-20....wish me luck!! Anyway, I spent time on mine this morning over coffee. I will snap some pics after the attic spews forth the decorations!!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'd hoped to fire a little paint at this thing by tonight, but not going to happen...few too many snags (including having to scratch some replacement parts). That and I usually prime outside with the stinky Tamiya rattlecans - temperature is a BIT too low to do that effectively. Supposed to be better Tuesday (although maybe rain).

Ran into some snags here as well. Went to install the PE brackets for the exhaust and one piece snapped off and then the other went missing....went back to the kit parts, which I had clean just in case and one went missing only to find the other PE bracket in the search...scratch up the missing base....back in business!!

I hope to have pics up soon... even though I know I won't finish in time.
I also have an Italeri Marder III H on the way to start making parts for another 38(t) kit. Might as well get started on that BEFORE I have the second kit.
And Dupes... yours looks great!

Yeah Jeff, updates always welcome. T, A bit of back and forth but sounds like the momentum is forward once again. Starting button thing up a bit. Suspension is once again being held flat and true with the tungsten powder.

Tungsten powder is out!
Do you actually use that stuff for anything other than holding parts down?

So just because it had the German markings on it doesn't mean it was in German service. Jeff That's correct, although generally speaking the standard Romanian and Hungarian units used their own national insignia on their vehicles as opposed to the German crosses when they were operating as stand-alone armies.

Well I seem to be at that point where some painting needs to be done...interior of course and then some assembly...then back to the booth!! So not a lot in the way of progress, but it's something! As you can see, a little damage Pretty much all set at the moment...maybe some sticks for the wheels and then I can lay down the primer!! As always, thanks for tuning in!

LOL...smoke and mirrors friends!! It may seem like this is moving fast but not from this end...LOL!! Dupes is probably done with his by now and he is on his way to finishing 6 more...Marc and Boyd are making wonderful strides equally! Bob - only sweatshop is coming from the bench being too close to the furnace I think!! Bill, Shish Kibob is on the menu my friend!! Andy, those moving shadows had to definitely be mice my friend!! If they were clones, I would have had them working on any number of old shelf queens down there!!
