Getting bashed over a red fence? Do the Europeans not use red paint? I think I'd ignore those folks...Very nice work overall I'm seeing here, I'd not think it is you first attempt by looking at it

reserve: yap, it sounds silly, but one member wanted to tell me that it was not possible to get red paint back in 1940... ;-) i am not so active anymore in this forum as you probably understand... :-) i must admit i did a really long and intensive research of the techniques i can use... fortunately the web is full of it... in the fields of knowledge i am really interested. i always try to get a perfectionist... not always a good way, but so i am... but there are also things in live i do not care about at all... also not good most of the time... ;-)

Personally the red fence adds a nice bit of contrast and variation to the scene...always an important element in dio composition.

Hey Coro, I have been to France a number of times, in the Normandy region there are hundreds of old houses with ramshackle looking fencing easily dating back to the 30-40's...all in various colours! The comment that there wouldn't of been any type of fence in that colour is just ridiculous mate. This is your dio, your creation and if you want it in red that is entirely up to you! It could use some extra weathering but I like how it breaks the scene up with some extra colour. On a past forum a staunch moderator/ armour guy always had something to say about peoples representation of various vehicles etc but sometimes being a little too arrogant for my liking. One of the guys painted a beautiful Kubelwagen in pink just to ruffle a few feathers...things hit the fan in a big way between them but we all got a good laugh out of it! Everything is coming together nicely mate, nothing wrong with a streak of perfectionism!! Good luck with your next endeavours on this project! Shay

hi shay... the same thoughts i had when it came to the fence color discussion. the fence is already weather beaten... but the details are not so clear in my images... but if it is still to less, i let it rain again on the fence... ;-)
your posts are always so motivating...
that was also my feeling in this german forum i posted before msc. there are some good builders but they are arrogant. because of that i landed here... :-)

Hey Coro, Sorry for the late reply but I have seen so much negativity in the past on forums that some people just stopped posting and didn't continue their projects. This is a fantastic build for your first diorama and don't let that other comment discourage you! As Mr. T used to say "I pity the fool!" I will send some good karma your way once I get my PC back up and running!

hey shay... sorry that your pc screwed up... no, other peoples comments do not make me stop projects...being it hobby or all other projects in life... it is just annoying. you post your project in hope getting some positive critics and maybe some advice getting you in the right direction... but criticizing without giving some advice making it better is a bad habbit...such a behaviour drives people only to other forums, where a more grown up communication is possible... but that is here in msc absolutely given... :-)

Hi Coro,
I discovered latelly your amazing topic and I caught my eyes with it. Especially when I saw the Miniart kit which is on my stash for a similar but not so complex project. I really like what you've done, mate, the tree is just wonderfull. Keep it on, I'll follow with great interest. Cheers, Nicolae

hola nicolae, thanks for your feedback... as i wrote in one of my posts, the details of the miniart figures lack in some spots. but that is nothing you could improve. except for the heads i think, they were so bad in my kit i had to exchange them...

ok, painting the figures didn't came out as expected... so i completely stripped the paint from all of them. but as a advantage of that i can now do some more work on the details of the figures.
surprising what you just see what i missed in detail work when primer and paint is on...
so i think this will be a tedious night tonight... ;-)

The fence could have been painted back in 1939, 38, 37... The owner of the yard & fence could have a couple of cans in his barn... Anyway, if after ALL the effort that you have displayed in this dio, the Big Problem is the color of that fence in 1940... well, I think your decission probably has been the right one. Thanks for sharing this work, theres a lot of time & skill displayed here ! Later, Jelly

howdy jelly, thanks for your compliments... spended a lot of time here thats right, skill maybe but i think that is more the first shot luck... ;-) as you said, there are so many options someone could tell the story why the fence is red... and when you take a closer look you will see that beneath the red paint already some blue paint was... :-) but nevertheless, i found my model forum home here now. so i do not have to worry anymore about such annoying comments... so image heavy update. i have the will now to get this thing finished without rushing through the rest of work to be done... but i want to go further and begin something new... :-) next part to be done is the old gate leading through the stone wall to the castles park and lake... so i started to roll out air drying clay into a thin sheet and cutting shingles out of it... putting them aside to dry... trying to paint my styrene wood slats with acrylics. i realize that there has to be done more practice and more practice. fortunately the painted wood goes completely under the shingles... ;-) first shingles... first row of shingles... second done... completed... :-) so if anyone needs some clay shingles... :-) i have some spare over to close the crown of the roof they used some lead sheet. i used some alu soft drink can... maybe someone sees which soft drink was used... ;-) heating the alu foil to make it more pliable... bending it over the crown of the roof... i think finished before paint... the clay shingles came out too thick... but thats ok i think... next update will be the painted roof... good night mates...

I still want my bench back!! Nice weathered look to the bench it looks really natural. As for the lead, maybe you could try something different instead? Most of the old roofing (my shed is from 1930) had half rounded roofing tiles to cover the top of the roof. Do you have Milliput at home? If you placed some small thin pieces evenly spaced in intervals you could achieve this look. Just an idea from another set of eyes Oli! It's getting late so I'm sorry if I haven't explained it so well... If you still go for the lead, some washes from an oil based primer could do the trick too...acrylics probably won't adhere to the lead I'm guessing. Either way mate, I like how you are trying to detail this diorama to its fullest! I will be taking a picture of my old wooden bench this weekend...it has an uncanny likeness to yours!! lol

hi shay, firts i already had these halfround tiles on top of it. but it became some sort of too mighty... perhaps because my half round tiles were too mighty... :-) so i decided to go with lead foil... for it is just a small roof above a rear gate... yap, i think the bench turned out quite nice. i am satisfied with it. next i have to put put some grime on the benchs legs... now they are still too clean. but this you don't see in the images... i am looking forward seeing a picture of your bench... :-) so tonight i started to work on the gate. first i cut the aluminium foil, rolled one side of the bracket around a 0.5mm brass rod and then beautified the other side of the bracket a bit... ;-) holding the brackets on the gates looked quite good in my eyes... decided to turn the bottom most brackets, so the sharp point shows to the other brackets... looks better i think. and from the sight of a handyman it would be correct this way... ;-) glued with ca on both gates... weathering the roof... first i made a wash out of black and grey to simulate the accumulated dirt from years on the shingles. then i blackened the shingles right under the overlap with black pigments. and as a last step i dry brushed with some red mixed with light grey the shingles a bit to get some contrast... and finally there must be some moss on the roof... ;-) the gate is already some years over to get some new coat of paint. so one panel already got rusted through... i always wanted to try out the hairspray / salt technique.. so this is the right candidate for it... :-) where are gates, there must be locks...

Pardon me for a moment....cough cough, cleanring my throat...(((((((LOL))))))) Wow, some folks really have nothing better to do with there time.. Fence looks great my friend! Weathered and all! As doe all the other work I had to play catchup on...Gate, bench...roof tiles!! Solid modelling all around! Keep up the good work!!

hola guys... all your nice comments keep me going... ;-) and it is just pure fun building all these details... right now as i am looking at the lock of the door i realize that showing the door open i also have to model a striking plate where the latch bolt snaps in when closed... ;-)
i think i will do this as first tomorrow morning... :-) also i have plans to finish all the missing groundwork on the base this weekend. and maybe get some small bits also primed... so stay tuned, i think this weekend will be a productive time... :-)
i have so much read about wingy building. painting and weathering... i have 3 test wingy sacrifices in my stash... i am horny right now getting my feet wet with either my intruder or my cobra...
so the dio has to be finished first... :-)
and coming back to the fence a last time... in the other german forum i get negative comments about the fence in every single post... so this difference between your opinion and theirs is a little confusing for me... but i will stick to it, because i do not really understand the concerns about it in "Germany"... ;-) maybe it is just a question of personal liking...

Coming along quite well, nice balance, no blank spots, tells a story, what's not to like? All the small details you're hashing out now enhance the overall effect. Great job

First of all: I love the bench and the door. This is a very fine scratch work.
Can I be serious to you, without offending you? I think this screaming red or pink of the fence is a bit too much. I like the color and the contrast to the szene, but maybe a bit of wethering could bring it more together. The point is, the viewers look first on your red fence, before they notice the rest of the szene, because this is a focal point. (in my opinion)

hey mad... no offending here... we are here to get honest and sometimes questioning replies... :-)
maybe i will give the fence a little washing to tone it down a little bit...
but i think it is a good strong counterpart to the relative dominating light green tree foliage in the other corner of the dio...
looking at the images without the tree, i must admit you that the fence is the strongest focal point...
