When I got back into the hobby 190 years ago I was determined to improve my skills. I would actually write down all the things I felt I did wrong with a build when I was done. I need to do that gain. Lots of things I don't like about his but there are also thing I am happy with. A lesson learned it that if I am going to try techniques never tried before... ya don't do them on a $150+ kit. That in combination with me bouncing around too much from 1 genre to the next and gaps in building time have all conspired against me. But not really since its all of my own doing. I have already started the "list". So please, critique away. I want to hear the good... and more important... the bad. So..I present the Tamiya 1/32 F4U-1A.

I reckon you did a superb job on this Wing_nut and it's great to see you take the time to document your build for others to learn from as well. Hat's off to you my friend.

This is awesome. That's all I can say. Wow.
I have to disagree on one thing, however - I think that genre-bouncing can only make you a better modeler. Instead of being constrained by techniques that are "taught" toward a particular subset, you've got more stuff to draw from. My opinion, anyway!

This looks really good to me Marc! As far as genre-bouncing goes I have to agree with dupes there. Going from one subject to another will help you in the long run. It certainly gives you a new spin on things. I haven't touched an aircraft build going on one year now. I never thought I'd stray from a subject I love like aircraft but it's made me a better modeler in certain aspects.

Thanks for all the nice comments fellas. I do agree with you about bouncing around. My problem is that I sometimes get stuck in a pattern and i feel like I forget how do do some things when I go back. Like just now i feel myself getting back into the old(original) aircraft groove. Doing armor for so long and the odd non-aircraft genre hop it was difficult to remember the things I used to do as 2nd nature. Or maybe it's just I'm getting old.

I've been waiting until I could view pics on something other than my phone to comment. I think you did a great job with the paint. It really captures the worn look I think you're after. I'm not a big fan of the salt thing myself. I see it work great for some, but I really messed it up the one time I tried, but that was probably just me using the wrong color and getting too heavy handed. I need to figure it out though since I want to use it on my F-14. But I don't think it looks bad on here in the end. I do know you thought it was a little heavy over the insignia. Really interesting scheme and I think you did a great job. I don't do a lot of genre jumping myself, so I can't comment there.

It's funny that you mention genre-hopping as making it harder to 'return to the groove'...especially since the hopping is usually done to 'get out of a rut'! Fine line between the two I guess, but I know how you feel. When you step away from your mainline efforts for a long time and then come back to them, there' some rust/learning curve that's still there depending. I've felt it too on occasion with my recent jaunts into other areas when I return to armor building. As for critiques, the only one I can offer is that you made us wait a long time for an update and then bam! It's done! I'd say you captured the look of the NZ bird you were after from the beginning very well. In terms of trying new things out on a $150 kit, well there's nothing like living a little dangerously to keep the blood pumping.

Hi, got to be quick here. I have to get the garbage can from the curb to get the tail wheel doors off the sprues before the come to collect the trash. Not so "done" after all. Jimmy, the salt thing was one of the techniques I was talking about and you nailed it, too heavy handed and too dark. Subsequent weathering blended it in a bit more. Another was a wash I had never used before that in the end looked ok but it covered the chipping more than I liked. Then I tried to touch that up with some metalizers paint on a very fine tip brush. each time I tried to fix something I liked what I was doing less and less so I just had to put a stop to it. Oh yeah, then there was the pressure of having follow yours and doogs F4U's. But that's in "in my head" thing so who the heck if that'll ever get right. Leon, thanks my friend. Bill, sorry for dumping on you all so quick. I didn't realize how close I was to the end. I was kind of surprised when I got back to it and all of a sudden it was done. George, thanks I appreciate the comments. Now if you will excuse me, I think I hear backup beepers in the distance...

Marc: I had to swing by and compliment you on this one. I missed the MoM voting (I hadn't joined MSC yet) but I DID vote for this one for Model of the Year. She's a great plane and you surely did her justice.
I went back and read your whole thread and all I can say is... I was stunned! The amount of attention you gave to all the sub-assemblies humbled me and my modeling skills. Not to mention the paint scheme, weathering effects...everything is superb! You should be VERY proud of this one!
My hats off to you for an all-around top notch effort & execution.
