Well let's see. Got myself seriously bogged down in the figure department once I started looking at Dragon's instructions - the color callouts are positively ridiculous. Spent I don't even KNOW how much time google searching for pics of actual uniforms as well as painting suggestions...and I'm not much closer than I was before. Blah. Anyhoo, time to focus back on the base and vehicle. If the crew makes it on there, even better, but I'm not going to let myself stress (any more) about it! First up is the finished vehicle and accessories prior to paint: Decided to go with the AK Dunkelgelb modulation set. Underside and shady bits got the shadow color: Followed by dark base color, trying to keep some of the shadows intact: And then the mid-tone dunkelgelb. Quick mockup with the base with railties and rails painted: Off to spray the highlight colors shortly. Talk soon!

Issues with Dragon instructions? Bull$tuff...ha.
Sucks you haven't been able to find what you're looking for to help you move forward with the figures. Nevertheless, the armored car? train? thingy? is looking great already. Look forward to some highlights.

I mean, this stuff is silly - they provide the Gunze numbers and the Mr. Color numbers...but their conversions don't match up at all! Like they list number XXX = YYYY, and later in the sheet XXX = ZZZZ. Which one is right? Toolbags. Highlights? Give me a couple minutes.

What uniform pattern are you looking for Marc? That's part of the problem - I don't know what they're called, and 3 out of the 4 dudes in this set are wearing different patterns. I've actually found some decent guides for uniform painting, but they rely on knowing the correct name of the pattern! I'll take a pic of the instruction sheet and see if you can I.D. any of them.

Nice touch with various wood tones on the rail! Thanks man! They're just base coated (rattle can), need to give them some washes/drybrushing/etc along with the base. Should be able to do some work on all of that today.

So it's deathly slow at work today...as a result I took an "extended lunch" to come home and put a couple of coats of paint on this thingamajig. Continued AK mod set, this is Dunkel light base and Dunkel highlight. Followed it up by stenciling on the crosses using my Voyager (or is it Lion Roar?) template set. Easy peasy! Decal stage skipped!

So cool, man. Really cool. The shading looks great. It's come to life now. I'm totally going to give these modulation sets a try.

Eyeballing the instructions on another site I think I may have figured it out. It helped that the figures were from the late war period and part of an SS division (the SS actually had a copyright on their camo patterns so that the army couldn't use them). My guesses are that both the commander and guy holding the MP44 are in a fall version of the "pea" camo. The radioman is maybe in a summer "splinter pattern" shirt, with fall "oak leaf" pants. The map guy has on a fall "oak leaf" shirt. I'm not sure on the splinter one. Most of those patterns had "rain" marks superimposed over them. Also, it might help that the book I have mentioned that while the patterns were specific, there were variations in colors from batch to batch. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Hey, thanks guys! Hope to have another update up tonight. Also, it might help that the book I have mentioned that while the patterns were specific, there were variations in colors from batch to batch. Cool! Let me do some poking around for those names and see if I turn anything up in regards to my Vallejo paints. I know some of them sound familiar.

May I throw my hat in regarding uniform camo patterns?
My reference is "Camo Uniforms of the Waffen-SS" by Michael D. Beaver. In my opinion one of the bests works on the topic.
Pointing guy and the one in the foreground are wearing pea dot pattern. Pea dot is special as it had no season versions. It was always the same.
Guy with map is wearing an autumn version of blurred edge or smoke pattern. This is based on the oak leaf with smokey edges. His helmet cover is most likely the SS-VT block pattern or the spring plane tree #4 or #5. My reference picture is too small to be sure.
Sitting guy seems to wear a spring plane tree smock and an autumn plane tree trouser or again pea dot. Also here the picture ain't clear enough. Coincidentally I have ordered the figure set recently. It should arrive tomorrow or on Monday, maybe I get a better peek then. The Volstad illustrations are usually very good researched.

If you do a Google search on "German pea camouflage" (substituting "fall oak leaf" and "splinter" for "pea" on subsequent searches), you'll come up with a ton of images showing a very wide range of color varitations. Just eyeball something close and you should be good to go.

Thanks Terry! Tobi - that book looks great! I'm going to have to try to track down a softcover version...the hardback is going for about 75 bucks around here. Yikes. Interested to see what else you can glean from the instructions when your set comes in! Bob - good to know that they weren't terribly exact. Makes my job a little easier!

Marc, if you intend to do more Waffen-SS figures in the future my advice is: buy the book! I know 75 bucks is quite a tough call, but it's worth every penny.
A cheaper alternative is from Europa Militaria #6: Waffen-SS Uniforms in color photographs. This is a handy softcover for color reference I also had at first, but I ended in buying Beaver's book as it covers the topic more in depth.

Thanks Leon!
Tobi - I'm hoping I can track one down that I can at least take a look at before I spend the bucks on it. Got a couple of shows coming up in the next couple of weekends, maybe I'll get lucky!

The book I'm using is "Fighting Men of World War II Axis Forces" by David Miller. You can find it used on Amazon for about $13.00, including S&H. The book is hardback, 9"x12", with 384 pages. It's got a ton of pics, both full color and b&w, of uniforms, equiment, and individual weapons used by the Germans, Japanese, and Italians. Covering such a wide number of items, it's not as in depth as others, but I've found it to be a very nice reference source, especially considering the price. Here's a link to the Amazon page: www.amazon.com/Fighting-Men-World-Axis-Forces/dp/078582815X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1427519549&sr=1-1&keywords=fighting+men+axis

Bad news Marc! The parcel did arrive, but no trace of the figures...
They say "not available" and deleted it from my order, but when I call up the shop's homepage it says over 5 items in stock, WTH?

Bob - that book is also added to my search list!
Tobi - that's a bit odd - do you have another source for that set of figures? I don't recall the 6xxx number off the top of my head to look around for you.
