Got the taxes done Tuesday (a day early!) so I let myself crack into a fresh kit to celebrate. Hehehe. Been jonesing to do an E or F Hornet for quite a while, and after nabbing a set of the awesome Furball Aero decals I was after it's time to roll! Nothing too crazy, adding the Eduard Zoom set and a Black Box SJU-17 to spruce up the cockpit a bit as well as some Hasegawa ordinance to fill up the pylons. Unfortunately, Revell got a little stingy in that department with this boxing (although the earlier one, which you can't buy retail-wise, had some decent weapons) so you've got to source your explode-y bits elsewhere. The beginning:

I've had one of these in the stash for a while. Picked it up for like $8 at Michaels during a sale a couple Black Friday's ago...lol. It looks to be fairly nice. I do wish it had dropped flaps. I'll be on the lookout for decals at next weekends show.
N-E-Wayz....I'll be watching with great interest to see how this one goes together.

Not a bad little tax-reward there Dupes! Especially since you were done a day early. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.

Should be interesting Bill! Have several of these in the stash (they're dirt cheap)...fingers crossed. Jimmy - the detail looks outstanding (have you looked at the cockpit and wheel wells?) - just going to be a matter of how well this thing fits. That whole nose assembly has me more than a bit worried. Hah.

Hahaha...I just get to START it because I finished early. No reward warranted for (essentially) forgetting to do my taxes until the 14th of April.

Yes. The detail is great. Better than Hasegawa in the wells. That's for sure. I've seen some WIPs and I recall a bit of clean up and filler needed around the nose. Not anything i would call too bad.

I did - going with the top one (sharkmouth!). I dig the bottom one as well, but it's an F. If I can find some more of their F kits (they're MUCH harder to find than the E for whatever reason) I'll do all of the birds on this sheet!

Oh boy it has been a while since I have seen a F-18 build here or at old forums. Pulling my chair in now...

I know it Andy...for all of the Hornets in service now you think you'd see more built up. It might just be the "gray over gray" paint option that does it.
Jimmy - that's perfect! Looks to me like he's sporting a single AIM-9X on the port wingtip and Mk.82/Maverick/Mk.82 combos on the inboard pylons. Can't tell if there's a FLIR pod (it would be on the port shoulder station) or any AIM-120s underneath. Looks like he's pretty well loaded up for ground pounding without any air threat.

It was a coin flip between top and bottom. had I noticed the shark mouth it was have been a no brainer. Good choice.

Don't worry...I'm sure I'll be doing the bottom one as well in time! Now to come up with some Tamiya mixes for 36375 and 36320. Hmmmmmmm.

Little bit of an update on this one. Threw the kit seat together just for reference to see how high the Black Box seat should sit in relation to the canopy. The two seats are obviously VERY different sizes! I'm leaning toward BB in terms of accuracy, but I'll need to play around with the fit a bit. Didn't feel like messing with the rest of the pit yet, so totally back-asswards I started in on the ordinance. Combination of Hasegawa weapon set stuff and pilfered iron bombs from some of my other Revell Hornet kits. Stations 1-11 are filled with AIM-9Xs on the tips, 4x Mk.83s, 2x AGM65s, 2x AIM-120s, and a gas bag on the center line. From the video Jimmy posted that included this exact aircraft doing a cat shot I can't quite make out what's on the shoulder stations (which is where the AMRAAMs would go) or if there's a FLIR pod on the port side. I'm guessing that the fact that there's only a single Sidewinder loaded up indicates that there isn't much of an air threat expected, so the 120s probably are not there...just haven't gotten far enough in the kit yet to see if I can leave those spots "blank" without any gaping holes left over.

Hahaha...that's funny you mention that. After opening up the Trumpeter Su-24 I traded for recently, I thought about doing that exact thing. There is soooooooo much ordinance in that kit!

Looks like you've got plenty of gear to load it up right Dupes! Who says there has to be a specific order to building things on an aircraft anyway?

As long as you don't try to do the cockpit last you're usually good. Hahaha.

Looking good Dupes! I have one of these almost at the painting stage. She does indeed require some filler, mainly in the nose area and around the rear fuselage join where the inserts go behind the flaps. Not hideously bad, though it does need a little love. On the upside, I was impressed with the cockpit detail and the fact that it has full intake trunking all the way back to the compressor face. The gear and gear bay detail is also really really nice, however I am doing mine as an in flight bird so that bit is irrelevant for me. What I was pleasantly surprised about was the very good fit of all the gear doors! So many manufacturers seem to stuff this up and it is a nightmare if you want to go gear up, but this kit was very little trouble with only a little filler required her and there. Pleasantly surprised! FYI I am doing my hornet in a blue splinter scheme on the Fightertown decal sheet "Wicked West Coast Hornets". Trying to figure out the easiest way to mask off the intakes as the camo goes down the intakes a bit. Thinking cap time...... Cheers, Sam

Been way behind in staying updated around here. I haven't had a chance to take another look at that video I posted yet, and I didn't make out the load-out when I watched it since it happened so fast. I sense that you're wanting to replicate that load-out?

I sense that you're wanting to replicate that load-out? I figured it would be a great starting point for a "realistic" loadout. Charts are nice, but if you want something that actually happened video or pics are the way to go! The only question is the shoulder AMRAAMS and the presence of a FLIR pod - but since it's a starboard view, there's no way to tell about the pod.
