Tamiya 1/48 A6M5 Zero dead

First project for the resurrection. Funny thing, I was going to start thus project this week anyway.

I'm adding an Eduard pe set. And I'll scratch or modify anything along the way. I "studied" these aircraft years ago for a 1/32 kit that is still sitting in it's box. I just built the 1/48 Hasegawa kit and felt a little underwhelmed. It felt like there was a lot missing.

I feel ya, I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love the way it looks, but I hate working with it. I just try to embrace the suck!

Cockpit is mostly built and primed. I used mr surfacer white 1500 from a rattle can, don't really have a reason for it.







Haven't put the pre-painted parts on yet. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of pre-painted parts. Not sure how well they will match the paint I'm using. Some of them may get stripped down and repainted.

I still hate pe!




I still have to pick out some detail paint here and there. The color of the prepainted parts doesn't match real well. I'll figure it out with some oils. I'll probably add some chips and maybe some faded paint. I don't know, it's going to be hard to see anything once it's closed up.

Yep all that beautiful etch will be almost invisible in there. One of the tightest cockpits around I think.

I realize that you don't really care for PE but you are really putting this old classic kit together VERY well!! That pit looks dang near like the real deal!

Looks real nice. I probably don't get excited as others about a lot of detail myself but the PE instrument panels sure can up the look.

I'm wondering which Hasegawa Zero kit it was you didn't like.  As a part of my plan to build every variant of the type, I've built several and thought they were nice.  I've also built one Tamiya kit, but it was a very early Tamiya Zero.

It was the Hasegawa from 1999. I don't have the box or instructions anymore. It's not a bad kit. But with it being a bit of an older kit, there are fit issues(what kit doesn't) and a general lack of details, the canopy has shrinkage around the points where it attached to the sprue. There's a bunch of stuff missing from the cockpit, no rivets on the exterior. It just left me underwelmed.

Speaking of details...

I decided to run wires and hose for reasons of pain and agony...
Some of it is copper or steel(?)wire. Some is evergreen rod. Some is stretched cotton swab for tubes and such.














I'm also going to scratch the one triangleish part and finishbthe lacking details on the pe part. I think it's weird the pe kit has on of these but not the other. Especially when they are right next to each other. One looks good while the other will look plasticy.

Ya know......I built a Hasegawa Dauntless Dive Bomber and felt the same way of the lackluster panel lines with no rivet details. They were ok kits but there were certain details that I really wish would've been brought out in a more modern kit of its time.  Despite some of these shortcomings, you're throwing everything but the kitchen sink into this build and it's really building up quite nicely bud.

I haven't started the 1/32 a6m5. I've only been sitting on it for about 10 years. I have a 1/32 a6m2, but it's in storage. I'll see of I can find a pic of that one on my flickr page. If they haven't deleted it yet.

1/32 A6M2 from years ago. I only put minimal weathering on it, I wanted a fresh, pre-December 7th look to it.



Definitely not a fan of Flickr anymore. Or atleast what they were for a while there.

That came out very nicely bud. These aircraft really were ahead of their time when they first hit the war. So nimble and pack a nasty punch with those 20's.
