Hi all Whilst i am still doing the research for the joust i thought id put this little bust up. This has been sat in the corner waiting to be done since Euro last year. so about time it came out. Its a Stormtroopers Dacian warrior sculpted by Carl Reid, and i have to say if i ever get half as good as Carl when it comes to sculpting i will be a happy man, the pose is brilliant and the face is excellent with plent of detail. For those of you that didnt know Dacia was roughly where Rumania is now, next to what was once Thrace Although my new man cave isnt finished yet im getting withdrawl symptoms from not painting so ill start this soon all for now Paul

Paul,
Nice looking figure. Makes me think I should try something like this instead of my normal output.
One question regarding the LC flesh set. I see you have each transition open and ranged in front. Do you premix blends and paint, or is it done on the fly and blended like oils?
I have been using the Andrea set and not getting on very well until I realised they have a complex progression of mixes ( had been using them as per the red set ) so now I mix all shades first, then work the face.
Looking forward to seeing more of this and how you tackle the armour etc.
Tim

Thanks for the comments guys Boots great to have you along Chris blu tac at the ready jackwagon after the weather we have just had the ducks have all drowned Robbo acrylics are new to me as well.....Experiment, just give it a go Tim i tested the range of the shades first and then decided that they needed more subtler shades in between,so i mixed another 6 shades using the LC colours I.E the very light with the next darker shade and so on. This then gave me 12 shades to work with, on top of that i added some red to the mid shade for the cheeks. as i said at the start this was my first attempt using acrylics and i love the fact that they dry so much quicker. For the helmet im going to make it look like old bronze so ill do a mini SBS for this technique as i go all for now Paul

Hi all as i said before im doing the helmet bronze and i want to make it look unpolished This gives you an idea of what bronze looks like when the elements have got at it, much the same as copper. so the first step is to give it a base coat of straight gold, all these paints are enamels by the way, leave this to dry for at least 24 hours, The next step is to apply burnts umber straight from the tube This is then wiped away with a cloth just enough to leave part of the gold showing Again this should be left to dry preferably for 24 hours. For the next stage i lined up, gold, copper, bronze, brass, and silver enamels, i then painted on a coat of very thin burnt umber, almost a milky wash, and then starting with gold, it doesnt matter which, i put splodges all over the helmet using the 5 different colours. At this stage blend some in with the burnt umber but also leave some parts quite clear and some parts will merge with the burnt umber. I also added some bits of green in places Now by this stage it all looks a mess, have faith and leave it to dry. Once its dry it should look something like this For the final stage i used black in the recesses and bronze and silver on the edges, you can also use silver to add sword marks as they stand out quite well Finally give it 1 or 2 coats of varnish ti give it a bit of a sheen As i said before this is the same sequence for old copper all for now Paul

Very nice Paul you cracked the helmet
Anyway Paul I shall be trying it. It's blending I'm a bit unsure of but it would appear you keep the colours thin and they blend themselve, yes ?

Hi Robbbo, im still very new to acrylics aswell, but i get all my shades watered down in pots and ranged from left to right light to dark and then its washes of colour over whatever it is your painting working from the highlights to the shading one on top of the other, i hope that makes sense Paul

Hi all just a few more pics, a coat of varnish has been added to the helmet, which made all the colours stand out well. also done the hair and the lamalar armour on the back of the neck. This would have been iron so ive added a bit of black to the steel enamel then all the joints in black and the edges in straight steel, its about the nearest i can get to iron All for now Paul

Hi all As usual on this site a big thankyou to all that have taken the time to comment. i know i really appreciate it So onward and upward, ive added several more highlights to the hair and started on the cloak. i think the technique of acrylics has finally sunk in and im really enjoying doing this. Might time to bin the oils Ive used earthy colours for the cloak trying to get a old worn, dirty look to it. The cloak pin will be a Garnet centre with gold surround Still some more shading to do before i tackle the heddy lamma breast plate Paul

Hi all Cheers Wouts Ok Lamalar, AKA heddy lamar, breast plate finished in the same way as the neck guard. enamel steel, shading in black, highlights in straight steel. the garnet and gold cloak pin has been done and ive made a start on the belts. These were base coated with burnt umber and allowed to dry, then washed with burnt umber and highlights of various shades of orange were added a few more highlights to add to the belt and then some shading with dark blue all for now Paul

Hi all whilst i was looking into shield patterns i came accross several interesting articles and pictures about the Dacians, and in all the pictures the cloaks they wore all had either a stripe or a block check pattern, so ive added a pattern to my guys as well. didnt want him feeling left out. start the shield later Paul
