i agree. The metallic sharpies are great colors and easy to add a bit of detail with here or there.

Practice commences. I will respray these and try again. Having done some further research and looked at several extremely grainy b&w photos I believe Graf's plane was less spotty and more bigger, messier splotches. And very dark further down than a lot of the photos you see. Experimentation is necessary. Also I'll go darker on the mottle color as well

You have been doing some right smart work on your 190 Kyle. Everything is looking great. I am of no help when it comes to mottling. I have yet to build a luftwaffe aircraft with a mottling scheme. Like you, I will be doing some practice prior to painting my Ta-152. Your practice efforts seems to paying dividends.

The best thing about this sort of practice is that there are no mess ups. You can do the same steps over and over and not worry about the parts that don’t meet your own approval.

I think once you find your sweet spot of thinning the paint, rate of flow and airbrush distance when doing the mottle you will nail this Kyle. Like Carlos said practicing until you are happy with is it the best way to get comfortable for when you do it for real.

These were the first 4 attempts. Seems I have a lot to learn. lol.

Yes. I definitely wanted to practice on some old styrene for that very reason I don’t want to be a to worry about messing things up just yet.

Thank you! Oh yeah. I’m going to keep practicing for sure until I have at least a modicum of confidence in what I’m doing.

For me the hard part about doing motteling was getting the paint thin enough to spray at low pressure but thick enough not to run before color begins to build up. The actual motteling isn't all that hard. Getting the paint ready to mottle, very hard.

As you can see from my first couple attempts there, I am also struggling with that concept. Practice continues

Well, I tried. I'm happy with it as far as first efforts go. Used about 4 different colors. Sure there's some splattering and it isn't exactly sharp but I figure their camo probably wasn't the most carefully done anyways. I based it off several period potato reference photos I found of the actual aircraft. Graf made his fame in the BF109 and was one of the best of the early German aces. So when he got his 200th kill they pulled him from the front lines so he didn't get shot down and damage morale. The bird I'm building is from that time. For a period of only a few months he was an instructor for a new high altitude strike group and they let him choose his own plane. Despite the successes he had in the 109 he chose the 190. He had an A4 for a month or two and an A5 for a month or two both freshly painted up in his own custom scheme. Following this times were starting to get hard on the Luftwaffe and he was recalled into front line action. 











So these are the references. The kit doesn't include the big air intake so I guess we aren't being super accurate with this one. But I think it'll look cool. His mottling seemed pretty light and scattered with more random dark almost lines than the smaller dots. My efforts now...

Thank you!!! I do not like painting yellow so I’m pretty happy with how that’s gone.

Thank you!! The yellow is Mr. Color RLM04. I was just going to use some yellow I had laying around but I spotted this at my local hobbytown and I’m glad I decided to grab it.

Great work on the soft mottle. I think that's more difficult then the polka dot mottle like on mine. Another good paint for RLM 04 is the AK Real Color covers very well

Thank you!! I would’ve likely gotten the AK real color if they would have had that. The rest of my rlm colors used on the camo are all Real colors. A great line of paints.
