I airbrush lacquer paints in a spray booth right beside my furnace. I was hesitant in the beginning, but 99% confident now. I have also decanted Tamiya Primer and TS spray cans in there using the straw method (actually a cut pipette). I’m not endorsing this by any means… just throwing it out there. :^) My setup is in almost exactly the same sort of position. I am an EHS manager so have access to all sorts of toys and have tested for combustible gases that escape my spray booth (also the same as yours) and could not even get a reading. Even using full size rattle cans I could not get the needle to do much more than wiggle. Now that said there is not a hope I would be doing it anywhere near the furnace or water heater without a well vented booth! Good to know.

I airbrush lacquer in my dining room, as my house is on a slab. I just make sure I do it when wife is at work. I was venting booth by removing screen and putting hose out window, but it seems yellow jackets LOVE lacquers and kept coming in house. Now I leave the screen in and vent through it. ( we are both allergic to stings) The odors from the lacquers go away pretty quickly if you leave window open and fan running. If you worry about the furnace( I would too), you could shut it off for a half hour until fumes are pretty much gone. I used to spray vehicles with lacquers, enamels, urethanes where the furnace was inside the shop and never had it explode. Interior is nice by the way. If open air spraying just make sure that the furnace or water heater are not operated by a pilot light. Turning them off won't help! Modern equipment with auto ignition would pose almost no risk at all. Some time I should test airbrushing lacquer to see if there even is potential to reach ignition levels. I really doubt there is unless you are at full flow and spraying into the air. Rattle cans of course are a different matter since the propellent is more often than not the greater hazard. By “open air”, you mean no spray booth vented outside?

Good info about painting inside. Thanks much gents. I really do need to figure out what I want to do sometime soon. It's one of the reasons I took a long hiatus after moving here, and it's THE big reason I spent last summer trying to get better with spray cans. Anyway... Minor update on the build today. I go the wheel backs done this afternoon.

I’ve just been so busy working on getting my basement in order I haven’t touched plastic in a couple of weeks. Except to move it from one place to another…. Here’s the good news though. I’m nearly done, AND… my new airbrush booth is set up and ready to go! I can’t wait to get back into that. Been about 10-11 years now. I have been thinking about the color. Since I can airbrush again, it’s getting a change of color to factory correct autumn bronze from Scale Finishes. Thanks for asking Joe. Much appreciated!

Dunno yet. I haven’t decided, and it’s kinda lower priority right now. But I’m sure I can make it look nicer with the airbrush. I’ve lost track of how many times that poor body has been stripped and repainted.😁

Yup, I’m looking forward to trying out some of these different paints that weren’t around last time I airbrushed. It’s mind boggling the variety of colors you can get now. There are projects that I put on hold years ago because of color availability. I’m stoked about it!

I have yet to use it and I wonder how it will compare to your Scale Finishes?

I’ve been using MCW pretty exclusively, except I have gone to Mr.Color clear, colors have been really close and metallics have been to scale. He responds quickly if there is an issue. I have yet to try Scale Finishes. I am looking forward to seeing this also.

Interesting that you bring this up. I’m considering picking up a bottle of the same color from MCW and doing a spoon test for comparison before I shoot the body. Just for my own curiosity. It’ll be a while before I can do it, but I’ll post the results here.

i can supply this example. Lime gold from both companies. MCW on the top and scalefinishes on the bottom. Back of the spoon is over black (MCW was not happy with the black base coat) front of the spoon is over white where they get pretty darn similar. The MCW is a gloss lacquer in this case. And Scalefinishes always gives an option of gloss enamel or base coat lacquer. I generally choose the base coat lacquer and add a clear. Although for some older colors I’ve chosen the enamel.

This is the only color I have from both companies so I was interested in a comparison.

Been a while since I did anything with this project. During the intermission, I decided to change color since I got my paint booth set up finally, and there are so many more colors to choose from. I’m going with a factory color, autumn bronze, from Scale Finishes. For my first try at airbrushing in many, many years, I thought it wise to test the paint out first and see what it’s gonna look like (and see if I still remember how to do this). This is what I’m going for: Here are my spoon test results. This is over a grey primer. To my eyes, it’s a touch lighter and a little more reddish. I think I’ll try it out over a black primer next and see how it looks. Also, I considered picking up the same color from MCW for comparison.

Looking forward to this. My 71 Satellite Sebring Plus was that color with beige interior. Perfect! Would you say your Satellite was closer to the car pictured above, or is the spoon a good representation? I'm wondering if it's not just the way the sunlight is hitting that car. Most other pics I've seen look much more brown .

Finally got around to ordering some MCW paint for this and it arrived yesterday. There’s a pretty big difference between the MCW and Scale Finishes paints considering they represent the same color. MCW is on the right in both pictures. Here are the two test shots side by side. Grey primer was used for both. My opinion, both look terrific. Both spray really well. I do prefer the flake in the MCW. But I think the Scale Finishes shade looks closer to the real car I posted above. That’s the one I’m going to go with.👍

One more update: Started laying the chrome strips and overlap for the vinyl roof. This is my first attempt, and I was pretty nervous about doing it. I kept putting it off, but now that the paint is here, I don’t have any more excuses.😂 I used Tamiya extra thin cement. Once it cures, the strips will be trimmed and lightly sanded. Am I missing anything here? Seems to be going pretty well so far.
