None at at ER After a primer coat of Vallejo Black Primer, I then applied several light misted coats of Tamiya flat brown. This is the perfect color for old rusted metal, besides the Lifecolor paint of course. i didn't use LC because I don't have much left and like to use these paints for smaller projects and rusting, such as rust washes. Here she is with her base rust on. Now one can see the smaller details such as the tie downs.

Hi Rob, it's real interesting to see the colour you used, not what I was expecting. It's not bright rust but more like old dusty rust, there is always more to learn watching your step by steps!
Cheers JT

Thanks Spud and John
John this is an old burnt out tank so the rust is dark and not bright as with a fresh burn out, like my JT. If you look at the color ref pic in the beginning of this thread, you'll see what I mean. There is not much for fresh rust, or streaking for that matter. Rust is not always the same and it's knowing where, what color and how to do it........ten+ years of studying ref pics and real life objects has given me a pretty good idea of the rusting process.

OK, paint is on and the chipping has started. Some touching up where I went too hard, and to the plastic, needs to be done. I'll get most of the chipping done with the water and stiff brush, then I'll use LC rust paints to do the rest of the chipped areas and rusting. The real tank for comparison...****FOR DISCUSION ONLY** The burnt areas will get the rust treatment using oils, something I haven't done in a while.

Looks good rob! I am just amazed at how you can rust these things up. I work with and see rusted metal every day, and you have the look nailed!

Oh yes, that's what I like !!! Your explanation on the old rust color makes sense Rob, rust has many faces, and this means more fun for us modellers ! Great start with the Flat earth, I like this soft color so much. The chipping looks perfect, a 100% match with the ref pic. I suppose you started with the HS method and applied more rust color paint after the chipping with water and brushes was done ?

Thanks fellas. G yep that's what I did. I used the AK chipping fluid and chiped the main areas, then used a small brush and sponge for the rest.
