well here i sit. the wildcat only needs a few small things and she will be finished. i contemplate my next project. i have been looking alot at cutaway builds. as i look at them i am drawn to the incredible skill needed to create a build that has such incredible detail. now i wonder if i am capable of pulling off one of these. for it i would need a subject that i am somewhat familiar with. easy. the p-40 fits the bill very very well. i have some knowledge of it and have a number of references for it. next up will be am i up for such a challenge? i think so, maybe, possibly, i hope . so next up is what kit to do. i have the 1/48 revell/monogram p-40b. (used for hawkenstien 2) i have the 1/32 hasegawa p-40e. i have the 1/32 trumpeter p-40b. they each have pros and cons. decisions, decisions. i am thinking of a cutaway showing engine area, cockpit area, and area behind the pit. so much i could do with the 1/32 stuff. the revell kit however is inexpensive and i have no sorrow with cutting one up. stay tuned sports fans. will i or wont i? that would be a great question. joe

you are right dicky, very much trial and error. ive definitely got the refs to be on the right track but the skills..............that remains to be seen.
have no doubt i will be screaming for help if required.

Count me in if you are really going to do this. I have seen plenty of your work especially that B-17 and I think you have the capability. YES GO FOR IT!
I personally think 1/32 may be easier to do major work...

well folks i am actually torn on this. the smaller hawk is more familiar to me. however the size would make the detailing a bit tougher.
i pulled out the trump 32 scale "b" and drew on the fuse a little to see what my thoughts actually looked like when laid out on the kit. god that looks like a lot of cutting. now the wildcat is done, the spot on the desk is somewhat clear (sorry andy), now i just have to make up my mind.

well i have made the choice, i think. for discussion only so with that choice made next up step one.... instructions call for the engine area to be worked on. i think i am a bit away from that. first for me is choosing where the cuts will be made to show some of the interior. so......... so onward and upward my friends. onward and upward. just hope i do it justice. joe

well i do hope i can give a good show. ok folks we have sliced and diced a bit today and here is where we are. first the slice.... i wanted to show some of the areas that have the most interest as well as giving a show to what is behind closed doors in the back. now what took me most of the day. now i did notice one of the vertical pieces is off a bit. fixed. i also forgot to cut out the hatch on the oposite side. no biggie. i will get that done. so the madness has begun for sure and there is no turning back now. comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. joe

leon that is the part that scares me. the stuff that had been hidden in my earlier builds will not be hidden in this one.

......wheel assembly. did i get ya? well just a little update. i am working this tail to nose. i can see some things that may not go well if i work it the other way. working with the kit tail wheel assembly. this may stay or go. depending on if i can find decent pictures of the assembly between now and when i get ready to close it up. so first here it is... and then with just a generic wash. i still need to dry wash this to get some of the detail to pop a bit. i added bolt heads to the areas that seemed logical. this may not seem like much but all told it took me and my shakey hands about 4 hours to get it decent. comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. joe

4 hours for the tail wheel, but it's paying off Joe! Good idea to start at the back and work your way forward. If you started at both ends and met in the middle, you could have some interesting results!

dicky the fuse is two halves. using tape to dry fit as i go. took pictures after i started playing with the pit area and dropping the floor. actually got it to fit pretty good.
bill had to start somewhere. this time i am modifying my approach to building. going from the skin in and starting on one end or the other. started on the tail as my modifications will require me to make sure all sits solid, there is no hiding it this time.
actually after some web browsing today i had to redo just a touch. the pit walls seem to be a tad different than what i had believed. still dont have it 100% but it is better than what i had prior. that cost about 3 hours of play time. will have pics when i have more to show.

a little bonus. i browsed the net for a while looking for some good pictures i could use to help with the pit and found some that showed a different look than i expected. after a few words i succumbed to the need to fix what i had done so here is my fix. while doing this i wanted to make sure that everything would work. first up is to modify the rear bulkhead of the pit and drop the floor. success.... i think. next up will be to make sure the front bulkhead will fit the way i need it to. comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged. joe

Wowzers, missed the start, sorry!! Joe, don't underestimate yerself mate, you are off to a cracking start! Really looking forward to seeing this one unfold, I know it will be a treat for the eyes for all of us! Think you made the right decision with your kit of choice too. 1/32 is definitely the way to go when you are getting into this much detail. Have you considered doing this one as an abandoned bird with lots of heavy weathering? I reckon it would look superb and you are definitely in the right place to ask for tips on weathering, not to mention how much folk around these parts love that sort of stuff!! Either way mate, I know it will be the bees knees when it is done! Cheers, Sam

Joe I'm afraid I can't help you. Unfortunately P-40 has been long out of my area of interest, even when I was deep into wingies. I was a Luftwaffe fan, with some wandering in US Navy and RA stuff.
