Well I was up all night with a sick pet, so...................
I cleaned off all the surface detail on the "road wheel" masters....loads of fun.
One of the many challenges facing any serious modeler attempting to build either the Tamiya, or Academy 1/25th scale Panther is the fact that both were loosely a toy. That being they were a remote control toy, not a serious model kit. Having said that they have PLUSES, and really are not a bad starting point. The Tamiya version is cleaner. and closer to 1/25th. The Academy version was originally a rip off of the Tamiya. The company simply made molds of the parts trees. Anyone who bought an Academy kit in the 80's remembers how the details were not crisp. They simple put seemed "off" somehow. This was due to the fact they started off using a knock off. Both versions have some SERIOUS flaws with the road wheels, least of which is the missing surface detail on the underside or facing away side of the wheels. Being a toy there is ZERO detail on these parts, thus having to add every detail manually. Additionally the interior road wheel, the "single" wheel has detail in the wrong way. They have a raised mid line on the tire portion where it should be a recessed line, very similar again to models of the 80's that had raised panel lines instead of recessed. Where this isn't as bad as the original Tamiya 1/35th Panther which was HUGE for it's scale, and had a whole series of wheels MISSING....the 1/25th version still presents challenges.
The pic's don't do the work justice.........

Hope your pet is alright again. Is it the ginger cat from the picture? Sounds like the old 25's are as fun-promoting as AER Moldova and Alan kits I'm sure you'll be doing a great job!

Looking good AG. Those oldies sure do need quite a bit of work, don't they?

So, I took a small break from the tedium of sanding and cutting bolt heads..... Here is the wench after it's first coat of primer and Panzergrey. PLEASE NOTE, the only Bergepanther winch photographed in color is depicted in Red-oxide Primer. This was done by the team refurbishing it. Technically most references DON'T give an actual color. I have chosen to go with panzergrey... my choice based on evidence and extensive reference.

So here is the Idler Wheel's support arm............... Since the kit was a "remote control" toy it had a straight bar arm....... it was supposed to be an "S" arm/joint...see pic .... I did all this cause the paint and wash hadn't dried on the winch

Excellent work PJ! As for your choice of wench-colour: I fully support it. Dunkelgelb may have been phased in in early '42 but there must have still been pots of Dunkelgrau around, so it was probably a case of 'waste not, want not'

Engines and other mechanical stuff often got a gray primer finish though so something like that winch could easily be non-DY no matter when it was produced. Don't know when the Bergepanthers were produced off the top of my head but the first Panther Ds rolled off the assembly line before summer 1943.

Of course you're right Bill - I mixed it up with the time the soviets stopped using red-oxide primer...

I'm currently "hip" deep in the mundane details Academy forgot.....and man that's a load Things like the towing pintles/mounts need to be drilled out the filled with aluminmum tubing, or exterior final drive details......

So in between rivets, putty tubing and the like I took a break to give the "wench" the first wash and dry brush.....

Can't beat a semi-nude wench - and yours looks particularly nice! Now I have to get a rag and wipe the drool off the floor...
