Agree with Rick on this one Doogs...a very realistic result you're achieving here on the engine. I can certainly see why you would prefer to be rigging bi-planes though!

More work on the R-2800! Little Pratt & Whitney decal placed, crankcase cover, distributors and ignition ring all installed and given a black oil wash - some initial weathering that will be supplemented later as everything gets wired up. The bolts on the cover were also painted with Vallejo Model Air Steel, which should be impervious to future washes. Hoping to have the engine wrapped this week before leaving for vacation.

Wrapped up the engine last night. Or at least the front face. Still have some rear exhaust stuff to deal with, and I want to batter up the engine mounting frame a bit. The ignition wiring was painted with MM Jet Exhaust, then given a wash of Vallejo Umber Shade. The rest of the engine got some raw umber oil wash, then a targeted application of AK Engine Grime to make it suitably dirty, reflecting an engine in hard use in terrible conditions on New Georgia.

I'd say you captured the look of a hard-used engine perfectly Doogs. Very impressive, going to look even more so once it's mated up with the cowling.

The R-2800 is now happily ensconced within the cowling. Have to hand it to Tamiya again on their engineering. Put the pieces together, brush with a bit of liquid cement, and that's all the wrote. The Vector cowl flaps proved a bit fussy, in large part because the mount ring is thin and rather flimsy, and the mounts that seat it to the cylinders weren't as crisp as they probably should have been. Ultimately I had to use some extra thin CA and Uschi's CA-ndle thing to get a really good attachment to the main cowling covers. I'm very happy I went with the resin cowl flaps, though, since the detail is very visible. Not so much the rest of the engine's aft workings - so I'm doubly glad I only half-***ed it back there. The whole thing, taped up.

Nothing like being happily ensconced I've always said. Just gets better and better Bud.

Beautiful work Doogs. Almost hate to see a cowling around that big P&W after all the work you put into it.

That P&W looks amazing. Those resin cowl flaps are certainly worth the price of admission. Dave

Been awhile since I've touched the Corsair - my focus the past few weeks has been finishing the LAV-AT and now trying to get the A-4 done. But a quick polishing sand and second coat of gloss on the Skyhawk left me with some time last night to push the Corsair a bit further along.
I ended up basically giving myself a heart attack.
After completing the last glue-in of the exhaust outlets and doing a test-fit to ensure I could indeed install the engine/cowl assembly after the wing was attached to the fuselage, I removed the wing, set the fuselage on the bench, and figured I'd hit the bathroom quickly before getting back to it.
I was at the garage door when I heard the sound every modeler dreads - a lot of plastic hitting the floor.
When I got back around to the bench, the engine and cowl were still on the bench, but the fuselage was on its side on the floor. Amazingly, the only damage was a small piece knocked loose and the seat jarred out of its two upper mounting holes. Easy fixes. On the cowl, I had to reglue the cowl flaps, which didn't surprise me given how fragile an attachment those have to the cowl.
It could have been - should have been - much worse. Definitely leaves me impressed at how beefy the engineering of this kit truly is.

Talk about a heart-stopping moment! Glad to hear the big bird didn't suffer any lasting damage there Doogs! I had a similar moment a couple of days ago with the Dreadnought. She sits on her stand normally with the bow pointing out over a corner of the work bench to keep it out of the way when working on detail stuff but I had turned her around to work on another section and my boxer, Brenda, came into the office and did the 'nudge' of inspection on the stern as it was within her reach...caused the whole thing to tip over and land on its side, but no damage done...fortunately it didn't roll over completely as that would've been disastrous...but it came very, very close!

That would have soiled my shorts... glad damage was very minimal. Sounds like its time for you to move your bench into one of your kids room... Am really looking forward to an update...

Doogs ... Great work man ...one of these days I might just pick up one of these corsairs .. I might wait for the next one since I do love the three tone paint job.. Thank you for giving me these bad ideas of buying a wingy thing ... I'll tell my wife that it's your fault .. I couldn't help myself!! Glad you survived the disaster.. could have been much worse.

Corsairs were built to take battle damage Doogs. Sounds like your build is right in line with the real thing. Nothing more frustrating than coming back to a build and end up farther behind or worse than when you came back. Sounds like this beauty dodged a bullet. Looking even more amazing everytime I look in.

Rick Rick - if you pick up a wingy thing, this is definitely the one to pick up. I feel like every step in the instructions is another "wow, that's a really smart way to do it" moment. Well, except for the ones that are headscratchers, until a few steps down the line when everything just falls together. Easily the best kit I've ever worked on, particularly from an engineering standpoint. The F4U-1A is on its way out soon...been hearing November. I imagine it'll get shown at the big Tokyo show later this month. Personally I've been planning to get all three (assuming they do a -1D) and do blue/gray, tricolor, and dark sea blue schemes.
