I do both...
Amazing work Doogs, I really think you are setting a new standard with this build.

Thanks all! Work continues on the oil weathering...and I imagine work will have to slow down heading into the weekend since I really need to get started on the G-10 magazine build. Blending work going on with the stabilizers... Work done on the outer wings, aft fuselage and tail. The fun stuff starts next...inner wings, forward fuselage and cowl.

Wrapped up the oil fading last night. Next up - making TES dirty! I've been playing around with a few techniques, and think I'm going to dig into my stock of AMMO and AK filters and washes for the heavy lifting here. Stippled on with a brush, then dabbed with black packing foam, it gives a nice, dirty, spattered look. Stay tuned!

Amazing weathering Doogs. Definately staying tuned. Trying to figure out if and how I could apply your techniques to my Typhoon or if I'm even capable of coming anywhere close. Appreciate the detail you are providing. Simply amazing ! Rick

The Birdcage has been on the sidelines for the past few weeks while I work on the Trumpeter 109G-10, but over the weekend I had a chance to drag it back out and play with it a bit. Clear coat to seal the oil filtering, followed by the start of the heavier weathering. So far my focus is "dirtying" the forward fuselage and inner wing areas. Figure this is where the Corsair had to deal with persistent leaks plus heavy foot traffic. AMMO Dark Brown wash is the culprit for the dirtying here, applied in a splotchy fashion.

After the "109 Interlude", the Corsair is officially back on the bench. Last two nights have been about extending the weathering, first with an overall brown filter, then with additional focus up front, dirtying up the cowl and forward fuselage. I also knocked out the gun tape at last, using squares cut out of the stars and bars in the kit's decal sheet. Tamiya decals - good for something, finally!

Yup, glad to see this back in the rotation. Question... are the vector cowl flaps appropriate for the -1a as well? They look awesome.

One thing that you've achieved is very elusive indeed. It's that scale look of just a couple of coats of paint on a metal surface. If someone where to ask me wheat is the thing that make me think it's realistic it that. And you are doing it with quite a few layers and keep all the detail sharp. You can sort of see that "look" i am talking about in this pic of "Bob's Robin" around the mouth and spinner highlight.

PANEL LINE WASH TIME! Over my last two aircraft builds I've become a hardcore convert to AMMO panel line washes. The apply-then-wipe-off properties seem too good to be true, but they're for real. For the Corsair, I used Deep Grey for the areas around the cowl, Tan Grey for the rest of the light grey underside and whites of the insignias, Dark Blue for the insignia blue, and Blue Dirt for the Blue Grey. Application Results!

Oh my this is tedious on something with as much surface detail as the Corsair! At least the AMMO Blue Dirt is a good match for the blue gray! Managed to get the fuselage up to the cockpit and most of the port wing done before it was time to call it a night.

FINALLY had a clear (if cold) night last night. Vallejo Matt Varnish on, clear parts masks off! Not long now...few more days of work at the most.

Awesome! You used the Mr Color Semi Gloss earlier. Why the Vallejo Matte vs say a Mr Color Flat? Do you like the sheen better out of the Vallejo?

Awesome! You used the Mr Color Semi Gloss earlier. Why the Vallejo Matte vs say a Mr Color Flat? Do you like the sheen better out of the Vallejo? I don't feel like Mr. Color Flat really goes all that flat. That's the way it goes with flats - either they don't go flat enough, or they're prone to frosting, or with Alclad's enamel clears, they never seem to fully cure. Vallejo goes flat and dries fast and doesn't frost. I hate their gloss with so much passion, but the flat works really well. Go figure!

It's the final countdown! (cue that wonderful guitar riff) The past two nights with the Corsair have been all about final touches. Exhaust and gun/ejection port stains, various clear bits, and aerial rigging. The rigging has worried me for some time. Two connection points, and a weird connection scheme up on the tail. To tackle it, I used EZ Line and some cut lengths of Albion Alloys 0.5mm nickel tubing. The plan went something like this: - Glue the line into the starboard fuselage - Thread through three tubing lengths - Thread through tail mount (which I had drilled a hole in way back during construction) - Thread line back through two tubing lengths - Thread final tubing onto "upper" line - Thread "upper" line through forward mast (again with hole drilled) - Loop thread back on itself once taut, and glue in place - Position all tubing and secure with thin CA The highlight of this entire process was when the EZ Line snapped when I was cutting away the excess. I think I invented some new profanities. I also got the wheels dusted up with AMMO Airfield Dust pigment. Nothing fancy there - the weathering on the 1:1 wheels doesn't look all that crazy, so I decided to avoid layers of grime, etc. As of now, the Corsair is 99% done. All that's left is to paint the aerial a dark metallic, and the tubing offwhite and I guess a dark gray or something (it's really hard to make out from the Corsair pics, but the big length of tubing is definitely not fuselage colored).
