Interesting to see the quirks of 'in the field' vs. 'official orders' extending to the world of aircraft. Happens all the time in the armor world too, especially when it came to German gear. Nice progress there Doogs, can't beat painted-on markings for the realism in this scale for sure. Have to admit I do get a kick out of some of the, um, hand-wringing that goes on around this! It's kinda like the whole "now way a crew chief would ever let his aircraft get that battered looking" trope. In reality, they would and they did because there are greater priorities during active combat operations than making sure an aircraft looks clean or conforms to the latest paint orders from Washington that will probably just change in four months anyway.

Nice. I can't wait to see the weathering unfold on this one. You plan to do the characteristic fuel stain runs? That's not something I've ever been able to get right.

Decals down. Still have the props and one gear door to do. Then the real fun begins!

Remarkable is all I can say. Well... I can add that this has inspired me enough that I will likely get the F4U-1A that Tamiya will be releasing soon. Don't be surprised if you see some of your techniques being repeated.

Decals down and sealed with Gunze Semi-Gloss. Next up - breaking into weathering with some salt fading! With the semi-gloss needing to sit for a bit, I did some dirtying up of the wheel hubs...figure I won't be able to get back in there once I put the outer hubs on.

Tonight's session started with a question. Before too long, I found it. Warm water + a tiny bit of dish soap to kill the surface tension + a spray bottle + salt. First coat to go down was a highly thinned light gray with a drop of some tan color added. I used Gunze since their paints don't seem to react with salt. Second coat - Gunze Engine Gray. A nice, grimy gray. Salt was rinsed and reapplied, then the Engine Gray went down around the areas you'd expect to get dirtiest - cowl, forward fuselage, inner wings. Here are the results for the night. Subtle. Still some salt fogging (not as bad as I'd feared though!) obscuring the full effect, but that'll vanish with the next clear coat.

Definitely adding some depth now Doogs, salt treatment is doing the job. I'm assuming you're using regular table salt?

Definitely adding some depth now Doogs, salt treatment is doing the job. I'm assuming you're using regular table salt? Sea salt from a grinder - works better that way since you get weird-shaped pieces and can vary the size of the grains.

On to oil dots! Followed my usual method of dotting multiple colors, although this time I went VERY light on the Mona Lisa Odorless thinner since I didn't want quite as "clean" a blend. I started on the underside last night, and didn't even manage to finish with it...definitely a time-consuming task, this. Here's the lower starboard wing, pre-blending. Dots and initial work on the lower center section. And blended. I'm thinking at this point I'm going to come back over with some darker colors in select areas to dirty things up even more. Or perhaps even break out the AK and AMMO products with the oils. More to come...

More work last night. Oil dot weathering is a pretty time-consuming activity! Got the underside as far as I'm going to...for now. The heavy staining coming off the exhausts may look a bit rough, but that's on purpose since it's going to be getting airbrush and pigment effects on top. Coming around up top, I got, well, the outer port wing sorted (again, for now...) Dotting and working in... Will it blend? Where it ended up. Holding the inner wings and forward fuselage for last since they're going to get really dirty, and I'll be coming back to these outer wings as well, but with a lighter touch.

Well worth the time and effort you're putting into the weathering stages on this one Doogs. Lots of canvas to work with but producing some nice results in the process.
