Nice trick to keep things from getting too complicated in the sanding department Dave! Nice wheels too while we're at it.

Good evening Andy, Thank you! You won't be disappointed with them. I am trying to figure out something for the opposite ends on the drums. Good evening Bill, The closer to "Chimpanzee" level, the better I like it. Easier to fix it if ya goof something up! Thank you! Dave

Hello T, Sorry for the delay in replying. Life has a funny way of happening. "Grass growing" progress at the bench of late. Progress yes. Just nothing worth posting as of yet. Until today. The beast has wheels and sprockets. You can see the wear & tear I put on the road wheels with a couple of dremel bits. Not to mention the bit of overspray which has yet to be corrected. I'm waiting on that until the side skirts are on and painted. No point in correcting twice. I threw this one in just because I like the angle. The tracks were completed last night and, got their base coat of Model Master Exhaust buffing metalizer. This pic shows why I prefer to make the idlers adjustable on my armor builds. The top run is fully extended, while the bottom run is fully compressed. MK's instructions call for 94 links per track run on the Tamiya kit. I built them up to 91…test fitted them and wouldn't ya know it. I really does need 94 links per run. Dave

Thank you very much Leon. I've glued up some styrene on the aft end of the skirts, as there was a sizable gap between them and, the flaps on the rear fenders. Dave

Some good progress all the same Dave! You've done the right thing in testing out the count of links when it comes to MK runs...sometimes you need a little more, sometimes a little less. I've even found that a 1-2 link difference might be needed right vs. left at times, it just all depends!

Hello T, Thank you for the compliment. For the tracks to get mounted, I first needed to paint the side skirts before they are mounted. Read on…you'll see what I'm talking about. Hello Luigi, Thank you as always for your support. Hello Bill, Thank you for the compliment. I learned the "track lesson" when I got into armor building some years ago. It necessitated cutting off the idlers and retroactively making them adjustable. Yes, everything was already painted at that time. Lesson learned. Hello Tojo72, Thank you for the compliment and, always glad to have you here. Hello Rob, Still going on. And…….more paint! Hello Doogsatx, Thank you for the high praise. Hello Wes, Thank you kindly for the compliment. Well gentlemen, I finally got the side skirts painted. This had to happen or the build was going to stall. Since I opted to build this with the side skirts in bare rubber sheets…um……er…..ahem…….NOT those kind of sheets. I figured it was going to be easier this way and, minimize the handling of the tank when the tracks are on, as some of the track pins don't have much of a purchase. There will be some touch up necessary but, the airbrushing went quickly and, touch up will be minimal. The masking tape carnage. Dave

The rubber skirts are looking nice - even if many a piece of tape were sacrificed in their creation! Not super-familiar with the T-72, but I know with the T-80 the skirts completely cover the return rollers and upper runs, so I took the lazy path of building like 60% runs...

Good morning Doogsatx, Thank you. I have no problem sacrificing tape so as long as it makes painting and touch up easier. When I was looking for reference pics to back up my wanting to leave the skirts as bare rubber, I found some pics that showed some tanks sporting "mini skirts". They are still the rubber but, cover only a fraction of what the full size skirts cover. The T-80 skirts are not too dissimilar from the 72s. I'm not sure I would call that lazy……instead it's an economy of effort. It leaves plenty of spare links for other uses. Dave

Thank you very much Bill. A lot of the ones that had painted skirts looked to be in museums and repainted. Not looking to build a museum piece. Dave

Good morning T, Thank you for the compliment. Today will be touch up day for the skirts. Hopefully I can weather the tracks so they can get mounted and then the skirts get mounted.
Good morning brother Bob, As always my brother it's good to have you aboard. Thank you kindly. I've been eyeballing more Soviet stuff. Like my stash needs to have more added.
Good morning Luigi, Thank you good sir for the compliment.
Up again before the crack of dawn. I am still liking this day shift gig. 19 years of nights and, I was worried about adjusting to days….not a problem. Time to brew some java and pay the bench a visit. Dave

Good morning Dupes, Thank you for the compliment and for having a gander. Read at your leisure….there will NOT be a test at the end. It's still a pretty nice kit at 20+ years.

It was a track day today. Out came the trusty MIG pigment. Mixed it with a bit of distilled H2O….slathered it on (last night)….completely dry today. To help get into the crevasses, I ran the track over a piece of 3/4" dowel, while knocking off the excess pigment with a stiff deer hoof brush. I then went back over the track with a smaller stiff brush to get even deeper into the track and came out with this. The top track is the finished product. The bottom track is how it looked to start with. The wheel side of the track just got a simple brushing. Nothing fancy. In the end, I got more than half of the pigment back that I used. Not a bad deal really. Dave
