WOW! All that photo etch. My late Uncle was the chief of the crash crew on the Intrepid for a couple cruises before going back to the Forestal gary

Thank you Ari!! Thanks Gary!! Wow, the the Fighting I and the Forestal? Kudos to you Uncle!! Thanks for sharing, great to hear little stories about folks that serve, especially when it ties into a build somehow! Thank you Bill! LOL, I think I did more non-modelling related things with the snow than without! 3 feet is a lot to try and move around out of the driveway, porches and a section of the roof! Nuts I tell you!! Any houses for sale near you? Thanks Leon!! There is a good amount that came with this monster. Part of me agrees with you, the other part wants to paint...at least until I look at the size of it!! Been working the Island on and off today. One page left in the instruction...mast and radars are left. Then I need to figure out the railing crap. Seems Gallery thought it was a good idea to just toss two sheets of straight railing, nothing cut to length. Looks like I need to measure and cut my way through this one!! Should have some pics of the Island soon!!

what and where his cruises were I cannot say for sure, but I do remember when the commissioned the Forestal, and he was on it for a long time. Sometime in the early sixties (I think)he was sent to the Intrepid. I think he was on it for two cruises at the most. His last cruise was on the Forestal, and that was the one before the fire. Then he retired (went in in 1943 at 17 years of age). I don't think he ever truly forgave himself, and later took his own life. Every one of the men on the Forestal's crash crew were killed, and he was the only survivor of that crew. Not sure that he ever did a Vietnam tour, but did do WWII, and Korea, and maybe a couple other places.
Only reason I made this post was to allude all of you about suicides and PTSD. It's real! gary

It is a shame that your uncle had to carry that burden. He, like all of the men of that crew did what they were trained to do. Unfortunately they did not survive and your uncle was fortunate to. His service has not gone unrecognized and most appreciated. Howdy guys!Thought I would take some time to make a final update as it pertains to the construction end of things. I had a little time last night and banged out the island...actually 1.3 times to be exact. Seems when you do an awesome job and have everything set to snap some pics, the modelling gods reach down from the heavens and wreak havoc, whisking the piece you were working on right off the table and onto the floor! LOL!! Needless to say, I needed to reattach several small parts after tracking down where they shot off to!! Okay then....the hull! I know you seen it, that is why there is the one pic!! Onto the Island. I am thinking things look okay. There are a few details missed here and there, but for the most part, this is a solid representation of the ship and any of those minor items could be easily scratched up with rod or flat stock. For anyone thinking of picking up the kit, or who already have it, you may want to take it slow and easy on the large antenna rig and mast. Both, while not terribly complex...well the rig anyway, they can be a bit wonky to fit together. I actually had the rig come apart before getting it together and ended up soldering it together for a bit more strength. I also found it easier and stronger to solder all of the radars together. The keen eyed will notice the mast leans a bit. I don't actually have that attached in the picture. There was no clear explanation in the instructions about a set of stairs leading up to the bridge section from the deck. And as you might have guessed it, there is not and extra in the kit...so looks like I might be digging in the parts bin of hitting the PC looking for some ladders later. One small bad criticism on this kit, is the railings. The kit supplied railings are in full sections... Personally I would have thought the pre-sectioning of railings might be part of the norm on newer kits. While not impossible to make these work, oh, btw, there are two sheets of these railings; the railing posts do not line up with the the offsets, bends and corners...inside and out. So this will be one item that will take me a bit longer to work out before everything is done! Thanks for tuning in!!

Amazing work on the tower!!! I can't wait to see the rails and see this painted. A great model and a phenomenal build, especially the etched work of which there's a lot, all done flawlessly.
My condolences on the drop, I can relate to combing the floor for the bits that fly off. I recently scoured the carpet for an hour then gave up only to find the part stuck to my shirt.

Hey Dupes! Yeah, 6 sheets in total. About 90% of it is real easy to work with...cutting and cleaning. We''l see how things work with the railings...LOL!! Thanks Ari! I appreciate the kind words! I think the fun will start soon!! Sometimes the old "part stuck to the shirt" routine is worse than the carpet monster. When you spend and hour looking for the part, only to find it there...oh boy!!

Do you have an industrial-sized spray gun to paint this? Now that I have my industrial-sized compressor hooked up, I'm seriously considering getting one for basecoating bigger projects like this.

Sharp work on that island T...it would've probably driven me nuts trying to assemble all those delicate parts for sure.

Thank you Bob!!! Sorry bout that! I just might have to do that Dupes!! I am considering actually using a rattle can on this one, just because of the size, then switch back for the detail stuff! We'll have to wait and see!! Thanks Bill!! I'm sure you would have done fine. Most of the PE didn't really have bends to them so they go together quickly. The downside it the railings that need to be individually fit....that will drive me nuts!!

Just AMAZING!!! You are da man! You really used Gator glue for this? I tried and it didn't work out for me... I must have done it the wrong way.

Thanks Andy!! Yeah, I would say about 90% was Gator when it came to the PE. I just dipped the edge of the part in the glue and placed into position. If the blob is too big, you can remove the excess with a damp Q-tip or even the edge of your blade!!

Wow Todd, you build ships too? I like what you are doing here. A man after my own heart when it comes to the photoetch for ships. They are a different animal in the model building world.

I have a few on deck to be done...Couple of three battle ships, a mid-60's Randolph conversion and with a little luck a "small" wooden things at some point!!

Yes, I do a ship every once in a while, but they are like a second marriage once you start...lol. It is a long term project usually. So as not to hijack your thread, I am posting a link to my last build. You may have recognized it from Baycon 2013 and the Nationals. Prinz Eugen

Thanks for the link! Remember that one for sure!! Big fan of the rigging and water effects! Se, now I agree about the second marriage thing (even though I am still on my first), but I thought the 2nd one was for "money"? LOL!!!!!
