Thanks Tobi! I love the 'Bubbles' tag, good one! Not a bad suggestion there regarding the prop, especially if this one was going to be shown 'out of the water', will remember that for future projects potentially! These were equipped with bronze props like most ships/subs of the era and saw only limited service by war's end, so that's the look I was going for overall with this one. The first combat sorties didn't take place until Feb 1945, so literally just a couple of months for them to see action before the end of the war. Guy, high praise indeed, thank you kindly sir!

Bob, my pleasure! When you look at b/w photos you can see there's clearly a color distinction between the warhead and the body and there are even some photos that show torpedoes washed up on beaches out there (they presumably missed and were in shallow enough water that they 'beached' vs. exploding), so I'm sure the 'red' color has some foundation as a result. That and of course it just provides a really nice color contrast! It does provide a good contrast, which is what go me wondering how visible it would be to an aircraft. I know the ocean is not "clean" water, but if the sub isn't submerged that deeply, I'd be worried the bright color may attract unwanted attention. Again... just musing...

While they were little, they could still go deep. Their maximum depth was 45 meters or nearly 150 feet! When you look at it top-down, the torpedoes actually make up very little of their visible profile due to the curvature of the hull and such. Still, on a clear day with calm seas I suppose it could make a difference.

It was my thinking that those midgets spent more time outside the water than inside, and corrosion after salt water contact takes place really, really fast. Hence we do salt water tests in the automotive industry to simulate a vehicle lifetime in just 500 hours!

I need to broaden my horizons. Rarely do I think to come down tot he ship area but when I saw your sub in the MOM... well... here I am. This is cool, cool, cool. I've long considered a sub project and this one is pretty cool and just about the right size and complexity. Don't be surprised to see a copy cat build one day. After all, I am copying your cut away 38(t) already. BTW... did I mention this is cool?

Hence we do salt water tests in the automotive industry to simulate a vehicle lifetime in just 500 hours! Exact opposite actually, there are several photos showing groups of them tied up in ranks just like fleet subs would be at the docks. These little subs had quite the endurance capability as well relatively speaking with an operational range of 500 km (310 miles), not uncommon for them to got out on missions of multiple days duration on their own or in small groups. Marc, Maybe the winter conditions in your neck of the woods are having an effect in terms of things being cool? Glad you found it and appreciate the kind words. Would love to see your version of this one when you get around to it...you could even challenge Andy to a duel!

A most excellent ideaBill. I just PM'd Andy and smacked him in the face with my gauntlet.

LOL! Marc smacked my head and I was wondering what the hell did I do?!?!? Now he wants to do another duel... God, I can not even keep up with him! It sounds like fun... that's something I want to build right after my Little Bird maybe in January? The show is in March so maybe I can finish it in time...

Superb Sub Bill, looks amazing bro. Thanks Brother Gary! Had some fun with it despite Andy's evil influence along the way.

Andy's evil influence? Me thinks the evil blameworthiness hast been wrongly cast! Tis you that hath planted the seed of discord that will hence result in a duel with a friend. Or, maybe you simply suggested Andy and I build one of our own. Hey... gotta blame someone, right?

Bill it's very cool seeing you do some ships, um subs. I have the three ship kits in the shed I would love to get to, especially to try some water/wave effects.....someday.
Keep up the awesome work bro.

Keep up the awesome work bro. Thanks Rob! I suppose 2014 was the 'year of the ocean' for me although it wasn't planned that way. Hope you can get to the water at some point so you can have fun with the water/wave aspects!

Thanks Bill. My 2014 build plans took a slight detour in June so things are a bit behind schedule.
