Hello, Ari here. I just posted my intro in the intro forum and thought I'd share my recent builds thus far. I've just uploaded one picture for each until I hear back about tumblr links.
My first model kit in almost 15 years was the USS Arizona, from a normal consumer kit. This was the first time I actually bothered to paint a model as it was assembled.
The grey recommended by the kit was either too dark or I bought the wrong one, but for my first in decades I'm rather proud of it, especially the tiny clock hands and brass bells.
After that I tried a kit I failed at utterly when I was younger, the Revell Hind Helicopter:
I managed to paint the belt buckles silver on that one, definitely a first.
After that I got more ambitious and built the Nautilus by Pegasus Models, the organ in my avatar is from this kit:
This was my first experience with photo etched parts and my first with vinyl parts, and the epoxy for both. I managed not to totally mangle the railings and the squid hasn't fallen apart yet, so I must have done something right.
After that I tried a Panzerfunkwagen from AFV Club. That was a new experience. I've never seen such a detailed kit. 70 parts just for the undercarriage, details like door hinges as separate pieces, by far the most intricate thing I've done to date. I just finished it tonight, but the crown jewel of this kit was definitely the antenna, which was ridiculously fragile. I made the mistake of waiting to paint it until after it was assembled, and as my airbrush is buried somewhere, I had to do it by hand, very very gently. But somehow, it survived:
So those are my recent experiences thus far. I have a Tachikoma and a Jigabachi on the way (From Ghost in the Shell) for my next kits, for which I intend to try using a primer, spray metallics and underpainting for the first time, and may try weathering them as that seems a critical component of more professional builds. Not sure if I should post those here when done or post progress pictures in threads in the sci-fi forum, I suppose it'll depend on how interesting the steps are, and on whether I need to beg for help.
But thanks for looking, any and all advice and criticism is very very welcome and appreciated, and feel free to ask for detail shots if you'd like to see more.
