Gary, just curious, but what is the natural predator of those feral pigs? Wolves? Aside from food availability, nature usually has a predator as a way of keeping the animal populations in balance. And it sounds like whatever natural predator was there to do that for the pigs no longer exists. Well, that's the problem, they really don't have any natural predators around here. And that's another reason for their population explosion. Oh, coyotes and bobcats may occasionally take a very young piglet, but it's really only where feral pigs coexist with alligators, mountain lions or black bear that any intentional predation occurs. We do have a mountain lion in our area out there, but I haven't found any hog kills, unlike the whitetail deer I've suspected of being big cat victims. Here's a pic of a mystery animal, gazing at some deer offal back in 2019. It's a poor-quality pic but the creature does have cat-like features.

....I have never seen a camo pattern that actually works!!! If you see it... it didn't work! One of very few jokes I have! Usually it comes out when hunting is involved. I usually get "try this pattern...try that pattern...what terrain/vegetation are you hunting?...etc". That just makes a silly joke that much funnier to me!

Thanks, Andy! Well, that's pretty close! It's an IMBEL FAL, a metric cousin of the inch-pattern SLR, built by a 'smith here in Texas. It was the first one that I had him build and is sort of my designated hog gun now. It works great for that purpose, but it really helps if you've got a rest. That rig is heavy, especially with a 20-round magazine. 😉 😃 Could strip that puppy down in about 35 seconds to this day. The FN C1A1 was the service rifle for Canada back in my day. In my cadet days I placed second, Canada wide, in the 300 yard competition with one. They were a beaut rifle. We used them in the Australian Navy. Green machine boys who used them in Vietnam swear by em. (Lithgow L1A1). Now we have the plastic fantastic peashooter. Gary, how come you don't eat the porkers? Is it because of disease or worms? Ours are full of it.

Bloody struth, we got a lot of 'em. 😁

That's crazy about the bobcat John( keavdog)! We had one around here for a little while. Haven't seen 'em in a while but we have a pretty good size wooded area just around the corner and there's all kinds of stuff in there.

As for the porkers mate, you can keep em! We have big problems with feral cats and dogs, foxes and rabbits. So many introduced species here that threatens the native critters.

Hey mate, I'm applying for honorary (honourary? ) Aussie status, if you will 😁! I spent 14 months in Geelong, Victoria, from February 1966 to April 1967. I turned 14 while living there; my dad worked for ALCOA and there was a smelter in Geelong. I enjoyed that time so much and had a lot of Aussie mates in school at Belmont High. And oh, how I loved the fish n' chips! 🤩
Here's a pic of yours truly, in our backyard there, astride my Benelli 50cc motorcycle, complete with those "bikey" mocassins:

garybrantley, loooove that wide open space :-) Thank you! 🙏🏻 I only have 48 acres of land, 32 of it is the hay pasture and 16 are oak woods. At one time, we owned 72 acres, but I sold off a 25-acre parcel back in the '90s. My dad bought the place in 1959, iirc. It's a nice size I guess, and we really enjoy having some sort of "retreat".
Thanks, Dad! 🥃

Was sitting in a industrial site today getting my cracked windscreen replaced, and this flew over. I think the airfield were BAE manufactures the wings for Airbus is nearby. This is the beast that takes them to France for final assembly.

Sooo. Was watering the garden the other day and saw this. The really cool thing was that it had only just come out of its cocoon and was cleaning itself and drying out. I believe it's an Imperial White, but I have to check that. Each wing was about the size of the palm of my hand.
Whereas this fella was in my laundry. He's about the size of my whole hand and perfectly harmless.
Saw this on a recent road trip. it's at a place called Lake Boga where they had a seaplane servicing and repair facility during WWII

Today (well...yesterday, at this point in time!)... I saw my first catch of the year! We're about a month ahead of schedule, due to the weak winter... I nice, chunky 3-ish pounder. She's a ways away from my biggest...but not bad for the 1st of the season! Caught one other smaller bronzeback...more of an average size (1-1.5lbs). 70F is RIDICULOUS for this time of year....we usually still have ice at this time!

The winter down here has been weird too. Usually this area gets a week of temps in the 40's. That's winter. But this year the temps stuck in the 50's for over a month. Usually by now we're well into the 80's but mornings are still 60's
