I have never completed a model in 6 months... I'll be building the Tamiya 1/48 Panther Ausf.G along with some AM parts. Hey, same kit! Although I'm going out of the box...that's a lot of aftermarket you've got there. Which scheme are you shooting for? I'm going to do 301 in the ambush scheme. Yeah, I had noticed that we were building the same kit. Very cool. I waffled between the Ausf.G, the Ausf.D or the Jagdpanther as I have all 3. I haven't decided on a scheme yet. Although I'm leaning towards 302 sans the side skirts. So, being an aircraft modeler, the concept of building the entire kit then painting does not register well in my head. As such, concerning the link and length tracks, have you ever attempted to assemble those in a way that you can attach them after you have them and the road wheels painted? I'm currently also working on a 1/48 Tamiya Firefly and that is where I'm kind of stuck. Any insight is greatly welcome.

I'd like to know about this as well because I'm planning on building an armor kit at some point.

Two things to consider in painting them before assembly
1) Depending on the tolerances, the paint might create a fitment problem 2) In order for the weathering to look cohesive you might wait until the tracks are together to weather them
I always paint the road wheels before installation.
There are others who are much more knowledgeable on this than me, maybe they will chime in.

Wait until I put up my build thread (tonight or tomorrow) - that's the first thing I'm going to discuss, because I wasn't sure how to tackle it with this kit. But now that I've seen the fit of the roadwheels to the diecast chassis (sloppy!), I know which way I'm going to need to go.

I build in sub assemblies before paint. IMO overspray on the running gear, road wheels, tracks, is usually mitigated by weathering. While kind of a pita paint can be scraped off of attachment points the touched up after assembly. Agree that weathering needs to be done as a unit, the vehicle doesn't tip toe across the landscape..it plows through it. Make sure to at a minimum paint both sides of road wheels, drive sprockets, idlers, as believe it or not it will show.

If you plan on doing heavy weathering and a muddy suspension, you can save for last painting that area. Here I did a black base on the road wheels after doing the rest of this by in 4B0 Green after all the rest of paint & decals are finished, I put on a heavy dark earth base coat over the suspension and adjacent areas that get filthy on AFVs, in this case using Model Master Burnt Umber lastly I airbrushed on a coat of a lighter coat of a lighter drier earth color, or two for more depth, to give a more dry, dusty look. These light colors are airbrushed onto the rest of the vehicle to blend it all together for a good used field look

You can also go with a simple black base straight to the lighter dusty color the main thing is to do the final color with everything else already added

Thank You for the outstanding input folks. Just great stuff to ponder.
I look forward to your process Dupes.
Perry, yup, I'm all in with painting the entire wheel. The subassembly concept fits into my mindset.
Stik, That is an amazing solution. It really looks fantastic. That is now part of my mental slideshow.

You guys are putting me to shame,I have entertaining visitors for a week and a half, meaning very little bench time. I'm on the verge of putting the rail car aside and starting my Panther although it goes against my obsession of not having multiple builds going, but I might make an exception here.
Good work everyone, having a hard time keeping up with all the threads

Since I will only be working on mine late at night on weekends I should have the track links ready to go by August and then I can start on other sub assemblies.

I should get in some short late night spurts but, it will be nothing hugely progressive.

I've been slowed by having very nice weather finally so it has been a lot of outside time. Unsure if I'll make the deadline but, I am going to keep at it. Finally got some paint booth time in yesterday.

I am still hoping to finish mine before Dec 31st. Just being sidetracked by my local club GB and it ends in 3 weeks then I will resume my work on the Panther.

I have been stalled on my build. I think I'm suffering from paralysis after my problem with the PE Fenders being too small. I've built one of the PE lengthwise fenders and got the PE attachment brackets for the side skirts built and installed in the correct position on the fender, but I haven't made any progress beyond that.
Between work and being on vacation for 2 weeks, I haven't spent much bench time in the last month.
I told my wife tonight that I'm going to spend the weekend at the bench.

Hmm, I cannot be quickly build and paint with my 1:35 Panther Ausf.G Last Production kit in this group until Jan 2024 so it`s no chance for me.

Now we're a lot closer to TWO months left!
Getting back on my 1/48 Tamiya Panther shortly. There's a chance I can fire some black primer at it tomorrow, actually.

I mean part of the fun of a Group Build is all of working together and posting back and forth. For whatever reasons,it fizzled a little bit, just four completions and counting.
But since there's no prize involved here, when and if you complete your Panther, feel free to post it in the completed gallery
