Ok, I'm really going to show my ignorance here, but I'm hoping if someone can explain the pre painting of the panel joint lines prior to painting the base colour. Doesn't the base colour and subsequent camo colours or whatever, bury the preshading (if that's the correct term)? Is it something I should be considering for this build or just get it together and basic paint at this stage?? There may be a build on here that walks me through it but I'm not sure where to start looking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to pull the wool as well, we'll see who can spin the best 'that just might be believable yarn'!!!!!

Those that do that apply the overcoats in thin layers, stopping when the shading is to their liking. I look more for random fading as that is what I am used to seeing, and let the panel lines speak for themselves. Sometimes I do add washes to bring them out better but my builds usually are cleaner than many like, in respect to weathering.

No worries Tim, after priming go over the primer coat with a dark color such as black on the panel lines using an airbrush then come over that with a gradual buildup of the color coat, you'll see the magic unfold. Keith (@terrorzscale0) did this with his recent Zero build. This is an in progress shot of his Zero to explain the process. and when the color coat is completely appllied it looks something like this:

Feel free to pull the wool as well, we'll see who can spin the best 'that just might be believable yarn'!!!!! There are all kinds of different ways to approach this. I tend to start off with the base color right over the primer, and then do the pre-shading/highlighting where I use both lighter and darker colors, depending on what the base color is. I also throw in random splotches and streaks of chromate and silver paint here and there, and then go over the whole thing again with the base color, generally in light, random patterns to get a realistic unevenly worn appearance. These F-16CJ pics are a good example of what that technique produces for me. Will be using a similar technique on my Fw190A4 build.

Many thanks to Jeaton01, Silverado and eaglecash867 for the hints and pictures. In regard to the use of darker paints, is the main purpose to show the join/shadow line between the panels or to indicate a certain amount of 'grime' in the joint or a bit of both?

On combat aircraft not much time was given to cleaning. Many times it was cleaned with a greasy rag that probably made it worse. To answer your question directly. The line between panels would hold a certain amount t of grime and dirt. Also depending on the environment the center of panels would fade quicker then the edges. HTH

Ok, This is not good. I don't have time for this you know. But I can't resist a Luftwaffe GB , especially a 109 or 190 specific one.. Did I mention I had a brief hiatus from the hobby when I was in the Navy back in the early 90's? Well, when that was over, the 1st kit I picked up at a LHS in San Diego was a Tamiya 1/48 Fw-190D-9. Again, the box art got me.. Yellow and red fuselage band and a blue 15 on the fuse... And I had never heard of an inline engined 190 at that point and that was COOL.
So I guess what I am saying is "I'm In!". Can't nail down my entry but it's probably going to be another Tamiya 190D (have the Eagle Editions corrected gun cover/spinner/props and the kit in the stash) or a 1/72 Airfix/MPC 190A-6/7/8. Then again, I could just pulled the old Monogram 190 out of the stash ...

Gents, Are prototypes allowed? I have a review pending of the FW190TL which is built on a modified Hobby Boss A6: Scale would be 1/72. The kit features a finely detailed jet engine - see instructions above.

Man that engine almost looks like the turbofans on an A-10 or S-3... Very cool subject selection Bruce!

It wouldn't be right to be a member of the forum while a 190 GB was on going and not participate..... Since this one has a long leash, I'll throw my hat in the ring with Eduards A-6 finished in Hans Dortenmann's winter livery. Hans had a pretty interesting career and it was in this plane where he collided with a Soviet fighter losing a sizeable portion of his wing and crash landing in early '44. It's gonna be a minute before I can spin this one up while I finish out a few other projects. This will polish off my trifecta of Dortenmann's various aircraft during his service. The stable so far...

Ah what the hell, I really fancy building something in 1/48th and it's been years since I built a FW190. Also being new to the forum it'd be nice to join in with you guys and get to know you all a bit better
Joe put me down for one of these - don't get too excited, it'll be badly built and brush painted.
Cheers!
