Meng 1/24 1966 GT40 Mk II 6/18 home stretch!

Have to get stuck in to another project before the end of the year. Won't be done with this one this year but wanted to at least get into it. I like this kit in 1/24 scale, it seems to be reasonably well detailed for the size. We'll see how it goes. Going to do the gold 3rd place car even though that car was an automatic, and just not quite exactly the same. I just like the look of the gold. 




Nice 3d drawn instructions. Paint callouts are not what I'd choose though. I'll likely print off reference photos and do most of it by eye.



Got everything primed. Wasn't happy with my work on a couple parting lines on the body so we'll hit it again with some sanding sticks and shoot some more primer over it. Nice enough body though with NACA ducts even molded open. Ah, modern technology.

Thanks! I’ve never built one before, not even the old Fujimi one that’s been re-released a million times.

Thanks you guys. Yes, gold. I wanted to do the 3rd place car just to be different. Seems that the vast majority build it in gulf colors, which do look great on it. As for the long break between updates. This one spent some time relaxing in the purple pond. This paint job has gone much better, thankfully.

Ah yes…I have also found some time to tinker on this. Nice kit so far. Tolerances are very tight. No complaints yet. Biggest concern I’ve heard about is the bodywork though so we’ll see how things progress.

Gorgeous work in gold Kandy! I hope I didn’t miss this detail, but what brand primer and paint combination are you using? Your work came together beautifully and gold isn’t the easiest color to create. Cheers!

Thank you very much Bruce. And that’s an excellent photo which proves just how not accurate my build will be. I’ll be leaving the molded in snorkel covers in place, for instance. I prefer the cleaner look and I never let history stand in my way. 😂. Primer for me is always Mr Finishing surfacer 1500 and almost always black. Over the black primer went Testors Extreme lacquer pure gold. Straight from the can this time although I will occasionally decant it. Finished off with scalefinishes honey gloss.

This kit has a lot of details for that suspension in 1/24 scale Kyle and you're putting this together pretty dang snazzy. Beautiful work so far.

Thanks Joe. I’ve talked to a couple people that have built it and they all agree that it’s a solid kit with some nice details but it also has its pit falls and issues. Adding MORE detail can cause fit issues as everything is a very tight squeeze. Probably going to be sticking OOB on this one

Thanks, Kyle! I don't know what Scale Finishes Honey Gloss is but I'm going to check it out. The color really POPS. Excellent finish work. And of course Mr Surfacer beneath the color coat makes total sense. Do you find using black as a base coat helps add some depth? I have not really experimented too much with that idea.
