I set a new record for the least kits bought while in Japan: Just a Zoukei Mura 1/32 J7W1 Shinden, a Bandai 1/100 ReGz ("Ree-Ga-Zee"), some Modelkasten Sherman tracks for my flail tank project, a tubing cutter, and a little diorama kit of a ramen stand. I was going to whine about the jacked-up price for the ReGz, but 8,500 Yen in today's dollars is a good $20 to $30 less than what I would have paid on the US Pee Bandai site.

While I was in Japan NOT buying a lot of kits, this came in the mail and was waiting for me upon my return: The British Sherman will become a Crab Mk I flail tank. The DeLorean will fulfill a teenage fantasy to "Live the Dream". The PAK Krote is just more MaK bang-bang!

Cool! A DMC-12! Very visually-impressive cars. Of course they were underpowered and handled like dump trucks (drove one once in 1987), but still awesome-looking works of art. After getting inspired by GreenKreationz ongoing F-104C WIP, I did some digging on Ebay (only place that kit seems to exist anymore) and found one being sold by Hobbyall in Seoul, ROK. I ordered it this past Sunday morning, and I found it in perfect condition on my doorstep this afternoon. If you haven't already, check those guys out some time, their service and promptness are out of this world. I didn't even think it was possible for free shipping to get an item all the way from Korea to Colorado in 2 days. I have to say that I am stunned by the quality of the molding in that kit, and I only saw two parts that had pin marks in the wrong place...on the insides of the exhaust tube halves...but they're so faint that they can probably be left alone and will never be seen once they get a coat of primer and paint. Also got the 1/32 F-105G, which seems to be a decent kit from the looks of it...but compared to the above F-104C, all I can say is...well...it's a Trumpeter. Walks like a Trumpeter, and quacks like a Trumpeter. I was inspired by the coolness of such a HUGE Thud being in my stash...as well as the smokin' deal Squadron offered me in an e-mail...further contributing to the deliquency of an adult. Help me! I can't stop myself!

I almost got to drive a DeLorean. There was a car dealership that had one as a trade-in that they were dying to unload. The salesman eagerly handed me the keys and invited me to take the car for a test drive. Settling into the car, it was apparent that John DeLorean wasn't kidding about making sure tall people would fit. I had to move the seat all the way forward just so I could fully depress the clutch! But other than the pedal position, the rest of the car felt like it was made for me. And then my "Back to the Future" moment struck - I slid the key into the ignition, turned it... and the car wouldn't start. The salesman was quick to chime in "Don't worry, it's probably just the battery!" He dashed away and quickly returned with a battery of unknown origin. He told me to pop the trunk lid, so I reached down... to find a frayed cable end minus the handle! At that point I realized fate was telling me that I didn't really want to buy an exotic car with over 100K miles on it that was possibly hiding a host of problems. A couple of weeks later, I drove by the car dealership and noticed that the DeLorean was still there, and they had moved it onto the display podium. Its doors were open while the lawn sprinkler sprayed water into the interior. I felt like crying as I drove away. BTW full disclosure: I have no illusions about what the car is. It is underpowered. It has a front/rear weight distribution like an old Porsche 911. The electrical system components are by Lucas. BUT, it is the only car I fell in love with at first sight, and it will always be special to me.

That's funny. I haven't seen a De Lorean since the 80s, but a friend of mine saw one a couple of days ago across town from here. It was even moving under its own power! Definitely a unique car, even though they'd make a Yugo look as reliable as a Honda. And now for Round 2 (or was it 3?) of "I'm not buying any more kits this year except for the upcoming Nunu M4 GT3... oh look, another Group C car!" Just released this week. Ben

Then wake up, grab that card and start searching

Oh, now THAT should be an interesting project! project510, good score on the decals! Looks like they did a much better job matching the fluorescent orange windscreen banner than Studio 27 did. I. Hope they work well for you. Ben
