Why I have decided to do this in 2024, with multiple group builds, a 7 year old who has classes 7 days a week, an a house that is always in need of something is beyond me.. but here we are! Some history of my build space at this house First attempt : Decent. Everything close but too close. Was constently knocking stuff over. Never kept it organized. A few years ago my woodworking had me to busy to even try anything model related so I put it all away AGAIN. Woodworking bench and tools took over. This work made more sense when my son was a baby. I could start and stop at almost anytime without worry of damaging paint, airbrushes or kits. Plus everything I was making was for friends and family so I helped a lot of people. Then as most of you know, my Son happened to get me back in the hobby and I decided I needed a real permanent space to build. And this was born. Worked great, was organized. My brother 3D printed a bunch of stuff for me. But over time I realized I had really bad posture while working and couldnt sit for long. I needed to do something better. Which brings us to the current situation. I recently swapped a ton of tools around. Ripped some shelving off of walls and plan to build a couple cabinets. And I have this currently A while back, keavdog showed off a really cool modular storage system that I jsut had to have. Until I saw the price. For those who do not have the tools I do, its a fantastic system and worth every penny if you can afford it. You can find it here. I took a good look at the materials and how they are made to find out that while its a great system. Its very simple in design so I decided I could possibly make something work the same, although maybe not as nice looking. Ive chosen to use all 1/4 MDF panels so I started ripping up the long shelf pieces first. Initially I was going to make all my own boxes same as the Hobby Zone stuff, but my wife had so many of these Daiso store plastic storage things, I stole them from her. I may switch to all boxes later but for now this gets the project further ahead in a short amount of time. I think a 3 tiered shelf is enough. And on top I will make paint jar stands for my Tamiya, Alclad and other paints. Here you can also see the empty space above where I will mount a new cabinet. I will need to make that as well of course. Also, I will relocate the power strip, and when the cabinet is done the LED light bar will be mounted under that. So it should provide great lighting. Anyways, thats where I am at so far. Hopefully today after the kids art class I will get to making some dado joints to seperate all the containers and supports for each level shelf.

Hey when the urge takes hold you have to go with it and a good workspace really pays off.
Looks like you have a nice wood shop set up as well. Woodworking has been a very useful side hobby to my other hobbies as well.

Started on the rabbit and through dado joints. This is probably as far as I get tonight. Its a nice fit. For once in my life I nailed this perfectly. But I actually need a bit of room for glue and I actually had to tap these toghether. A little sanding with fix it.

Ok, I lied. The boy went down early and so did the Mrs. so I took advantage. Im really liking how this is working out. Here is a test fit. I still have a ton of divider pieces to add, which will add supports for the longer running shelf boards. Also for now IM leaving the top open. Im not sure if I need another shelf. In the end I will probably leave it a bit taller on the side supports, jsut to keep stuff from sliding off. Kind of like built in book ends. I was going to make a complicated jar rack cutting out measured circles with the drill press, but honestly... As long as there is some kid of piece stopping things from falling off I dont think I need to. Just some blocks cut at different heights to raise each row a bit higher. Let's gooooo!

It appears that your workbench redo is coming along very nicely. Very clever organization and well built. You are very fortunate to not only have access to a wood shop, to also be skilled at it. I've been getting the itch to tackle a reorganization of my hobby room. A little change and rearranging feels good once in a while. It's just a matter of what do I want ant the motivation to get into it. This is going to look and feel great when all said and done James.

I use acrylic nail polish racks from Amazon for paints. You can get them for about $13 each when they are on lightning sales. Clear Nail Polish Paint Organizer Holder Rack Shelf 6 Tier AcrylicThey work really well. One thing I learned from them, if you don't put on the side panels, you get trays to hold the paints that you can move around easily. I have some Model Master paints I keep in a drawer and now I keep them in the drawer in trays from a nail polish rack. Makes it easy to move them around as needed.

I used to use the exact same method for making tired paint racks, it works perfectly.
I love your redo, can't wait to see it finished.
Are you going to paint it or leave it in it's natural finish?

I wasn't super motivated to rearrange the garage either, but it was getting uncomfortable so I think that was what motivated me the most. I am glad I started though, because its already much better. And I agree, a fresh new look jsut feels good! I use acrylic nail polish racks from Amazon for paints. You can get them for about $13 each when they are on lightning sales. Looking at the dimensions the base is too wide for shelf, but again the table will come in handy. I chop off the lower section to get it to the right size, and do as you suggested, use the lower part separately. Thank you! *EDIT: I just looked a little harder in the link and they have 3,4 and 5 level versions also. No need to cut. Ill take a look tonight and see what else I plan to put up there. I used to use the exact same method for making tired paint racks, it works perfectly. I love your redo, can't wait to see it finished. Are you going to paint it or leave it in it's natural finish? I was going to leave it, I still have not decided. At the very least I will probably shellac the thing just to give it some protection since its in the garage. My workbench/outfeed table is MDF also and unprotected and is fine, but its also 2 1/2 inches think. This stuff is only 1/4.

Admiring your work! I WISH I have your excellent woodworking skill. Looking forward to see it done! Woodworking is deceptive that way. It makes you look more skilled than you actually are haha. Anyone on this board could do this, with the tools necessary. But thank you very much for the compliment. Holeee SCHMOKES!!! MAN this is nice James. I hadn't peeked in on this thread till now but I'm sure glad I did because this is some good work going on in here. Looking forward to seeing more. Bookmarked. Thanks, Joe! Should be cool, I actually have some neat plans for it so it should be interesting for those who check in!

Bit of an unproductive evening tonight. Spent too much time moving things around trying things out and not deciding on anything. Before I knew it, the night was over.. at least in the garage it was.

This is awesome that you can design and create your own workspace storage systems. Great ideas and execution. Thanks! The tools are a big investment. But they last a lifetime and can help with many many things so they become invaluable.

What a great idea and it looks like you are making a ton of work space for yourself. My bench looks like the back seat of one of our kids cars......
