Today was primer day! Actual paint will be a bit delayed, as the primer highlighted some areas that need attention first. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/hjSJk3Y1/IMG-2582.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/q7rgK5pH/IMG-2583.jpg) Cheers Dave

Thank you kindly! I like the contrast between the metallics and black primer. I’ll hits a few other areas with a metallic under coat. Only light wear on this one. Probably heavy sooting due to the low grade petrol the Germans had at that time.

Remember that nice, smooth even primer finish? ![](https://i.postimg.cc/MHdkXWjS/IMG-2582.jpg) Yeah! Me too. Well, here's the updated version of the upper wing surface. I used AK grey putty and wet sanded it down with 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit. There's a couple of low spots that need touching up with putty and sanding. There will be more sanding tomorrow to further feather out the primed areas. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/NfMSpvHK/IMG-2585.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/GmTNnPzr/IMG-2586.jpg) Panel lines will be described, and rivets redone. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/ZKMgQs8V/IMG-2587.jpg) I noticed several areas of the leading edges that still had a glue seam line. At these areas I used Ammo blue tinted cement for a couple of reasons. One, the seams were fine enough that cement will act like a filler/putty. Two, the tinted cement is like machinists blue (eg like when resurfacing heads), the remaining high and low areas will be visible when sanded. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/44BNYZGy/IMG-2589.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/KzmxYpst/IMG-2588.jpg)

One step forward two steps back huh? The fitment issues look like a pain but it looks like you have the issues well in hand.

Nice. Blue cement is a great idea. I can see how that would be useful in situations such as this I was watching a video on resurfacing a head from a diesel tractor and saw they used machinists blue. It occurred to me that with the tinted cement I have that I could use it to help with sanding. Ammo also makes a red tinted cement. I've used it and the blue for when I'm building up multiple handed assemblies. It helps to keep them all sorted.

One step forward two steps back huh? The fitment issues look like a pain but it looks like you have the issues well in hand. Sort of. I had hoped to avoid this step, but after getting the leading edges glued in, I had realized that putty was going to be in the future of this build. I am not sure why the manufacture engineered the leading edges this way, but the face that mates with the rest of the wing leaves a bit to be desired. Sometimes it is easier for me to fill in after a primer coat had been laid down. This is one of those time, as I have three surfaces that I need to bring to the same plane. Anyway, thank you kindly for the compliment. Cheers Dave

Hate to hear about having to go back over that beautiful primer finish that you had but it looks like you've got some good stuff in the works for this build Dave. Good tip on the blue cement as well man.

As to the blue cement, you are most welcome and, no knowledge is wasted. Cheers Dave

Last night I was contemplating laying down some base color. As I was rolling the bird underneath the light, giving on last "go over" after re-priming the bird. I found a couple more spots that need some sanding. Glad I found them before color was laid down. Also, the fine wet sanding allowed seamless re-priming. I decided that after spending the day running the pressure washer and cleaning up outside for spring time, I was just too tired to tackle that. I'll be at the bench later today. Hopefully I can post some progress.

Progress is looking good on this Dave. That's a bummer to see what happened to the paint on those landing gear doors though. I'm a little puzzled at that but hey, I'm sure you're going to recover well from that small mishap. Will be watching for the recovery efforts.

I think I may pull out a sheet of styrene and put a couple of theories to work. I’ve started using AK gloss coat. I don’t think that’s the issue as the engine cowlings are pristine. I thinks it’s the my application of the metallic paint, too much, too soon, too fast. Whatever it was I’ll get it sorted. I was stoked to be laying down color yesterday. Cheers Dave

Recovery efforts have begun on the crackled paint. I am still stumped on how it happened. I have taken a dampened Q-tip and taken the offending areas back down to primer. Fortunately, Vallejo primer is pretty hearty as it has stood up to this process. There were a couple of areas that needed feathering, so I hit them with 3400 and 4000 grit. I'll give it a once over and proceed with a new application of paint. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/2SjDz2v3/IMG-2602.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/0Nb1SjVs/IMG-2603.jpg) Cheers Dave

So far so good for the metallic paint recovery. I laid down Mission Models Aluminum in very light coats. I'll let it cure thoroughly. This was more metallic coverage than I was planning, but I'll file this one under "Creation by Mistake" ![](https://i.postimg.cc/SQgVKXdQ/IMG-2604.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/023fpLhL/IMG-2605.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/fR9v58Nk/IMG-2606.jpg)

I was able to reproduce the crackle issue I had earlier. I discovered it by accident. I thought I’d shoot a gloss clear coat and let it cure during my work stretch. I had laid down Mission Models Aluminum earlier today. For my clear coat I used AK Gloss Clear 3rd Gen thinned with distilled water. I only shot this on one of the landing gear doors. Just to be sure. Within a minute, I had noted crackling occurring. Now, I had used the AK gloss on the cowl and it was a beautiful gloss finish, sans cracking. Those were Vallejo metallic paints. Looks like I do need to do some more trials with the various metallics I use. What I did use was my tried and true Vallejo gloss clear.
Cheers Dave
