Repaint looks great and it’s good that you were able to discover the issue so you can avoid it now.

I really should set up a board, paint several strips with the metallic paints I have and cover them with the various clear coats I have. Just to see what plays with what. Cheers Dave

I was able to start laying down some color today. The paints will be a mixture of Vallejo and Mission Models colors. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/K8T0G0dt/IMG-2607.jpg)
The cowl is only dry fitted ![](https://i.postimg.cc/TYzc4rp1/IMG-2608.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/d0Bm3pnZ/IMG-2609.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/9fVYWCPj/IMG-2610.jpg)
The two tone colors for the horizontal stabilizers and elevators was simply a matter of the base coat. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/RZwT5NHR/IMG-2611.jpg)

Camo and Reich bands were painted today. Along with getting the main and tail gear installed. The camo is RLM 76/81/82/83, with 76 being Mission models and the rest Vallejo. The Reich bands were Vallejo Model Air. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/YC00WQjd/IMG-2612.jpg) I have since gone back and touched up the darker overspray with some finely applied RLM76. The Reich bands were painted on as I get a better result than with the decal version. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/W3L1CK8y/IMG-2613.jpg) Looks like I missed a seam line ![](https://i.postimg.cc/rptphc1W/IMG-2614.jpg) The main wheel is only dry fitted. The mounting points for the main gear are pretty heart. Unfortunately I broke my trusty burnishing tool seating them in place. The angles of the main gear are determined by the mounting point. There is some play in the wheels, so I'll need to be careful when setting them in place. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/63rpX01p/IMG-2615.jpg)
Cheers Dave

Every time I hear about Mission Models its a problem. I'm glad I never attempted using the stuff The paint in particular I had a problem with was the Aluminum. Metallic paints have always been a bit touchy when I have played with them. Myself, I have had good results with Mission Model paints. That being said, they do not thin like other acrylic paints to get good results with. There was a bit of a learning curve for myself. When you find a product you like, and it works for you, use it! All of that being said, I'll be painting a sheet of styrene with the various metallics I use and do a cross check with some of the clear coats I regularly use and those I am starting to use. See, if I can sort out some of the wonkiness I've had with clear coats on this build. Cheers Dave

The mottle/splinter look outstanding! Getting the gear angle set just right on these can be a chore for sure Thank you kindly! The way the struts fit into the main spar is very, very snug. It sets the all of the angles. The right strut was rotated ever the slightest bit inward. I applied some Tamiya thin cement, and gave it about a minute to loosen things up a bit. With that, I was able to rotate the strut enough to get the main wheel parallel to the centerline. Cheers Dave

I was able to touch up the mottling before my work stretch. I added some smaller and more irregular patches. It looked far to uniform before. Also, the bird is now standing on its own legs. The cowl/annular radiator is now mounted. I need to clean up the joint where the upper louvered panel meets the top portion of the cowl. The cowl sides are only dry fitted. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/JnC3Yb1J/fullsizeoutput-e01.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/m2gYnZGd/IMG-2617.jpg) The oleo strut was painted with an AK Chrome pen. It was easy to work with, and the results are amazing. The digi cam was having a difficult time finding a focal point that evening. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/rsQSp35C/IMG-2618.jpg) Looks like a bit of over spray correction is needed on the intake. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/j56HpL51/IMG-2619.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/T29jQLBL/IMG-2620.jpg)

Definitely easier to spray the reich bands vs trying to get decals to wrap around there properly. Looking good!

I really like what you added to the mottle. The chipping loots great! What method did you use to achieve the chipping on this? Thank you kindly! Chipping was a mix of TRESemme Fine spray (eg cowl pieces), and Vallejo chipping medium (eg small tight spaces where I don't need a lot of coverage). The Mission Models lends itself to chipping better than the Vallejo. It takes a lighter touch than the Vallejo.

Some decals were applied yesterday. The national markings and a handful of stencils. The thin decals went down nicely with Vallejo Decal Fix and Walthers Solvaset. There were only a couple of silvering areas with the balkenkreuz. These were remedied with Solvaset and a sharp needle, à la tattoo.I did give the decals a light coat of Vallejo Decal Medium to blend the edges. The tricky decal was the swastika. It comes in two pieces. I assume this makes the decal sheet universal for sales, as the is not a swastika on the sheet per se. It can be tricky to apply to get everything lined up, but the good news is the the decals are not über fragile. Now granted i did not man handle them, but they held up to manipulation for positioning. One of the swastika pieces wasn't quite where I wanted it, so I was able to "float it" with a heavily dampened brush. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/bvq8H9Lx/IMG-2628.jpg) The balkenkreuz were one piece decals, so I had to place the access hatche in place, and then apply the decals. The swastika decal was a bit trickier being a two piece affair. When they dried sufficiently, I then cut along the hatch lines with a nice, sharp #11 blade. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/d11YgQbD/IMG-2629.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/d1xYFPF6/IMG-2630.jpg) As you can see, the decals snuggled right down. The lower right latch on the hatch will attest to this. The decal edges are pretty much not visible to the naked eye. The eye of the digi cam however.... ![](https://i.postimg.cc/W4SV9qfQ/IMG-2631.jpg)

Decals are done! There is some confusion with the decals. Some that are mentioned in the call out are not there. Some that are called out are for a later variant, the H-1. The scheme I was going after I have realized is the H-1 variant. The wing access panels are different. Oh well. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/SQrRBHrx/IMG-2635.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/wBVnq5bL/IMG-2636.jpg) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/LX8wnqr7/IMG-2637.jpg) Overspray correction needed here. Noted. The step was painted with Mission models so I could get a finer chipping effect. Achieved! ![](https://i.postimg.cc/wMtrQCxQ/IMG-2638.jpg) I opted to paint the spiral on the spinner. It gave a more "hand painted" feel to it. The decal, though quite nice was too stark with its edges. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/fy9KLXvM/IMG-2632.jpg) Here is an example of the decal sheet errors. Number 62 should be Blue 9. Number 63 is Green 4. As you can see, you get a choice of Green 4 or Green 4. Decal 49 was supposed to be something else as well. The decals are a delight to work with. I get the sense that this sheet was originally for the H-1, in 1/48, given the errors. It's not going to stop me from enjoying this build. ![](https://i.postimg.cc/x8VFXK2h/IMG-2633.jpg)
Cheers Dave

Your getting near the finish line on this! It looked great before the markings but now it's even better! I'm looking forward to seeing the hatches and prop in place as this is really looking like a "butcher bird" now.

By the time I get back to the bench, the decal treatment will have cured, and I can seal the decals for weathering. Cheers Dave
