Skipping ahead in the model queue to build this kit from AMT: There is a tonne of plastic in the box. Should keep me busy for a while. Going with Tamiya TS-41 Coral Blue for the body with a white roof. Still thinking about interior colours.

I'm really digging the two-tone schemes I've been seeing here recently. Need to give it a try!

Fantastic. I’ve been wanting to pick this kit up for awhile. My dad had a similar truck but his was a GMC and he, somewhat ironically, used it to haul his go kart back when he raced. Coral blue is going to be a great color for this truck!

A top notch kit with unlimited possibilities Sharp looking build - those wheels suit the resto look you went with. I was thinking of going with just the very top part of the roof (separate part in kit) in white along with the headlight bezels and bumpers.

Early notes:Body has a boatload of mould lines to remove. Chassis has a 1/4” warp. I’ll try to straighten it out with a heat gun. Quite a bit of sanding required to make the roof and hood fit flush. Glued and puttied the top and bottom halves of the hood together. Deciding whether to use the kit wheels (left) or a set from my spares box (right).

I was thinking of going with just the very top part of the roof (separate part in kit) in white along with the headlight bezels and bumpers. That was my original plan as well but the more pics I looked at the more I was convinced the white from the doors up was the way to go. The headlight bezels and bumpers in white would be very stock correct.

Minor update: Heat gun worked on the twisted frame. Also discovered that the interior floor pan has a double twist in it. This kit must have been made on a Monday. Firewall and front grill insert were not a tight fit… added some liquid putty to fill the gaps:

( on the 1:1) I know I will be avoiding this one in the future. Interesting build already. It looks like you’re well on the way to making it right. I’ll be watching

Firewall and front grill insert were not a tight fit… added some liquid putty to fill the gaps: How very odd. This was a very popular kit on the Model Car Mag forum for a while and I have seen no less than 8 builds and none of them had all these issues. From my build I know there were a few mold lines that needed a few swipes but zero warpage and my firewall and grill insert fit like they were Tamiya parts. I have to wonder if your kit was exposed to a hot environment at some point in it's life. I bought a '55 Chevy kit that had been in a shop window for a few months and when I got it home I saw it was unbuildable due to warpage. Took it back and the shop owner said "oh ya it does get hot in there sometimes". Didn't bode well for the 1/72 U-boat kit he had front and center!

Brilliant work. This looks like it’s going to fight you. Still on my list to build sometime but I hope mine (when I get one) is more like what Tony is describing. 😂

I've built a couple of these and have several more in the stash. I've never found it a troublesome kit. Mine are older issues of the kit though, the one with a photo of the built model as a grey truck on the box art, so probably 20 years old. One thing I did find with this kit is there are a lot of "seams and mold lines" that look like they need to be cleaned up until you look at a real truck and see those same details. It was the 1960s, cars were not as neatly finished as today. I looked hard at buying a 1-1 back around 2005. It was a 4x4 with the straight 6 at a used car lot on the way to work. They wanted too much for the condition it was in, but such a neat truck.

moparman18064 tcoat kyledehart5 aaronw I purchased the kit from one of our best, high volume hobby stores in Ontario. Maybe it sat in a shipping container somewhere before that. I haven’t got to any of the smaller pieces yet - not gonna be too pleased if there are issues there, too. I did see a YouTube build where the modeller said his chassis was warped and had to use a fair bit of CA glue to hold it in place. Mini Update: While trying to straighten the interior floor pan I managed to over-heat/melt it. That sucker isn’t going to fit flush anymore. What a mess.

If there are a few like that it could be a case of "the new guy" handling the sprues before they were cool enough and creating the warps. I hope it isn't tooooo common because I have praised his kit and recommended it to many people that would think I was nuts if they had the same issues you do.

I’m going to warp/trim/Evergreen/putty it back into a reasonable fit. As long as I can attach it to the chassis and squeeze it up into the body, it’ll have to do. ,

Reminds of a part time job I had at a truck delivery/rental service back in the ‘80s. One of their drivers’ truck broke down and they sent me to pick him up in a crappy old Chevy van where I could watch the road pass by under my feet.

Update:Opened up the grills with a combination of Dremel circular grinding bit, 240/320 sanding sticks and X-acto blade. Then cleaned up the edges with Tamiya Extra Thin cement. This kit can be displayed with the hood open or closed. In the closed position it sat quite loosely so I decided to add 4 little brackets and magnets.

Great work on opening up that grille and a dang good idea on using the magnets to secure that hood into place. Looking forward to seeing the next updates on this bad boy!!!
