My contribution to this group build is the 50 year old Tamiya Big scale Ferrari 312T I bought it a very good price from Japan via E-bay but as expected the 50 year old decals have seen better days Other than the decals its in excellent condition and the Japanese seller has included a photo copied English copy of the recipe. I started this last week with the engine. I had planned to start with the cockpit tub but i cant decide what to do with that at the moment ..At this stage it depends on if i button the whole thing up or leave some panels off I think this will be mostly OTB but there are some points that need addressing for example You can see here that tamiya have marked screw and bolt positions with shapeless pins and as these are right on the top of the engine i have changed them for stud and nuts for example
So just to bring us up to date , this is where i am at the moment

Good progress. Can always count on Tamiya for the nice engine detail.
It was shocking when you said "50 year old kt". Of course it is, but reading it resulted in a 'holy cow' reality check moment for me. Thoughtful that the seller included a photocopy of the instructions in English.

To put it in perspective i was just thinking about leaving school and getting my first job when this was issued and..... in 2 months time i will retire LOL!! This life of ours passes by all too quickly sometimes. My son is getting ready to go into the military and was getting really impatient about just getting to it. I reminded him (and will continue) to take time to live in the moment as this life indeed goes fast if we're not careful. On a modeling note, Tamiya has ALWAYS had top tier products in terms of detail and this one is no exception to that rule. That engine is very well replicated. Will be looking forward to watching you work your magic on this paddy.

did some plumbing today, electrical and fuel but strangely it didnt really look right. I checked the plug lead dia and the fuel pipe dia in 1/12 scale and they are spot on. It was only after i took a picture i realised its the red sleeving It would look OK in the back of a 1/1 radio but its not 1/12 I cut the sleeving and it looks a lot better. F1 cars are a whole new thing for me so its a earning curve. Moparman so far so good, i think your average 1970's Tamiya is an equal to your average everything else 1990's quality..

Plumbing looks great. And good call on the red sleeves, good recovery, looks much better (though I'd not have thought much of it if you had left them).

Awesome start paddy!! The engine looks outstanding already. Per the Indycals decals, not die cut but I do find his pinstriping pretty easy to work with. It stretches over shapes and straightens pretty well. It could well be that I’m just used to using them by this point. I’ll be bookmarking this one and looking forward to the next update!

I tried on the Honda and it was so incredibly difficult. I guess its just a lack of experience. This looks incredible paddy. Well done man.

Thanks guys Something i am finding with cars is, most of the after market is for motorcycles, ie: the huge 1/12 Tamiya motorcycle range and these parts are sold as 1/12. fair enough but stuff for cars is much bigger so for example banjo bolts and bleed nipples on a car are usually M10 or M12...but on a bike they are nearly always M6 So what i am getting at is 1/12 motorcycle parts are half the size of 1/12 car parts but they are all sold as just 1/12 in the genre You see it especially with bolts which are sold as 1/12 be them 1mm or 10mm Anyway these are the rear calipers, i doubt they will be seen but this as i said is a practice run for the Meng Maclaren where they will be seen. The banjo bolts and bleed nipples here are half millimeter.

Paddy, Just found your build thread and read through it start to finish. Outstanding work on the engine with plenty of attention to details. And those brake calibers really do look the part.
Bookmarked so I don't miss an update.

This was the first large scale race car I built. I loved it. Unfortunately it did not survive the few moves we have made over the years. Great kit, you'll do well paddy

Exhaust was actually pretty painless, there is still a bit of filling to do on some joints but it wasnt the nightmare i was expecting some wash needed on the gearbox and sump but all good otherwise. Time to look at the rest of the build now

Paddy, The engine as a whole looks like the real deal. Excellent choice of metallics. Plumbing and wiring really adds quite a lot. As for the exhaust headers, I'd say that you nailed them perfectly.

That is stunning.
All the subtle color differences look perfect, as do your treatment of the exhaust grime. Even your choice of white for the exhaust looks spot on.

This was my first attempt at the cockpit tub, Ok its silver but not really aluminium despite being MRP white alloy After quite a bit of head scratching i decided alloy is semi gloss but i couldn't see how to paint this so experimented with MIG polished metal pigment and got this... Its hard to photo the effect but if you look in the seat well you can see its now reflecting the floor, in the right light its doing this all over but as i say the lighting for the pics doesnt really show it. Mig polished metal pigment is a dry very fine powder that i suspect ios pencil lead ie: Graphite dust
