Nice work on the base Oliver them slabs look so real only addition to the base would be a bit of AK slimey grime round the edges of the slabs in random areas to replicate moss and suchlike or use some pigments for dust depending on what effect you want for a end result it looks superb as it is buddy

Thanks dan! I will try out some AK stuff soon - I actually have some AK dust coming as well as some Modulation sets (Russian and american) and some paintbrushes. (I've also ordered the fruil tracks ) -Oliver

Hi again all! here's some pics of the finished base: And in case you're wondering why I'm writing this while I'm supposed to be at school - I'm not. my parents went into another town for a meeting and forgot to put the dog into his kennel, so I'm doing so -Oliver

You are 14 years old? WOW! You should have seen my builds I built when I was 14 years... embarrassing! Agree with guys here... the base looks GREAT especially it was built from scratch! It would look even better if you can apply lighter grey and some greenish or tan paint to some of the blocks so they won't look too monotoned like this... photo for discussion purpose only. Keep it coming! You are doing far better than our boss at his age...

Thanks all! to be honest, I'm amazed that it turned out so well. @ dicky - I will try the sawdust method later - I've been working on a big science project for school and haven't been able to work on the dio. Thanks also belair and deafpanzer - oliver

Looking good so far Oliver. jackwagon has given some great advice. He's also correct in that old school techniques work just as well. I think a bit of dust will tone things down. I used to use fine dirt from outside. Look for light colored dusty dirt. I find the fine powdering dust/dirt and place it in a container. By gently shaking side to side and tapping on the bottom, you will get the dust at the top and heavier dirt and tiny pebbles on the bottom. Then separate or just use a large soft brush to apply the dust. This should be the very last thing you do or else when touch etc it will leave marks prints or come off. I once collected some fine dust powder that is was almost finer than real pigments.

Hi again everyone, and thanks for your advice! I tried the sawdust as grass, but it didn't (IMO) turn out so well. After thinking about it for a while, I've decided that i will most likely make it be a winter dio with a few bare spots where the road is visible. the KV-1S will most likely be sitting in the middle with a track disconnected - not from shooting but from wear and tear (loose pin?) the title will probably be something like "not AGAIN!" etc (not sure yet). I will have to pause this for a little bit until the tracks (which cost 50$ with shipping etc!) and modulation set come - I can't model track marks , impressions, etc in the snow with no tracks, and I don't know if they vary from the kit tracks, so i can't use those for the imprints. I will be (probably) making the snow with baking soda and PVA, unless someone knows something better. As usual, please tell me how I'm doing! -Oliver

Your really going to town on this one.
A tip for next time you do that type of thinning to fenders. Thin it from the bottom, under side. When it's thin enough just punch through from the top. Hard to do once the wheels are on so I understand why you went that way. Looks like someone else is having fun doing these wrecked tanks. Keep up the good work Oliver.

I don't know why I added the wheels at this stage (well, it was a few months ago and i was excited to have gotten the kit, I suppose). On my next build ( a Dragon T28/95 that I'm getting for Xmas) I'll be more careful. And, Yep, I'm having a lot of fun with them , and (I hope) I am getting better - I'm redoing the sturmie, dio for example to make it more plausible (and i'm better at concrete then swamps). Relating to the above, I might make the T28/95 be derelict - according to wikipedia and other sites, the one remaining prototype was lost in a field for 20-odd years! Now I'm off to play World Of Tanks to try to get a screenshot of the KV-1s in case there's anything that I've missed in mine (yes, the tanks in it are that good quality ). - Oliver

I have no experience with snow Oliver. Maybe check the tip and tricks board and post the question there. I'd like to know this myself.

Thanks! I will be adding snow to the dio soon (partly to cover up the failed attempt at grass, and partly because it will be set in Russia/Poland), and will probably leave it at that. I'm also nearly at the, like you said, "fun bit" ;D I finished the other track today and reduced the slack in the tracks to match pics that I've seen (it was a snow day because of freezing rain, so no school ); And where I work sometimes (my little brother's stuff is on the right ). I work there sometimes, as I can talk to my family, etc (rather then at my bench in the basement ) I'm nearly ready for painting now . I just need to find a way to make the tracks dark (I've heard of Blacken-It, but I have no idea where I would find some), and then I can add primer and start on the modulation . -Oliver

So, would anyone have suggestions for darkening the tracks?

Oliver, try the AK burnishing fluid. It's easy to use, no harsh odors and inexpensive. I have used this on my JT and will use it on my Tiger tracks. When it comes out of the fluid it will be dark and rusty looking, what your after. You can then add some dust to it if you want. Less than $10 a bottle so you can't go wrong.

once you get a bottle put the contents into a dish of some kind and fill the bottle with water and put that into the same dish.
i cant believe u got the tracks done so quickly.

WOW! Are you really 14 years old? I read somewhere that you were very young. I can not tell if it is a work of a teenager. Friuls look GREAT! I see you used dress pins to attach did you? I haven't tried burnishing fluid yet. If you are not able to get one because of your limited budget, there are several ways you can make it work using just paint, oil paint and lots of pigments if you got them. First I spray either red brown or black primer on friuls. Be sure to use good one... I use big ones from Walmart for only $1.50 each! Paint fairly thinned enamel paint Steel. Apply dark washes using oil paint Burnt umber few times until you are satisfied. Then of course apply pigments at end. Finally take out sand file to rub some paint off gently where contacts occurs. Hope this helps...

Thanks Andy! I will be sure to try that if I can't find the AK fluid (thanks rob ) during my trip this week! In the meantime I will start priming and painting the KV-1S. -Oliver

HI again all, here's some more pics. I got a base coat of "Primer" on - from what I've read, Soviet tanks just used another coat of paint as primer after 1942. Unfortunately, there were many hiccups - i spent an hour and a half trying to figure out where a clog was and how to fix it. the paint was too thin then, so i switched from brown (i read about the use of another coat as primer after this bit ) to the green that I'm using for now ( it will eventually be covered with rust and then modulation). Anyways, here's the pics: Unfortunately, the tank was still a little bit wet (i washed the fail paint off a while before and left it to dry), so in some spots at the bottom the paint didn't adhere: I'll fix that later (once the water's dried) or I might just leave it as it will be covered anyway soon). How it looked after the fail: and, finally, just for fun (i took this with flash on and the lights off): Next, I need to get some more rust paint (as im flat out), and also hopefully get some AK burnishing fluid or something similar from the hobby store this weekend. -Oliver

"Tanks", rob . It's unlikely that this coat will ever be seen, but, as i have no grey to prime with at the moment, and no rust colors either, I thought that I might as well prime it with some leftover Olive-Drab that I have lying around. as soon as i go to the hobby shop this weekend i will get some of both (as well as a couple of kits, more plastic cement, styrene strip, a random thing that i notice and immediately want- "could be useful sometime ", etc). -Oliver In the meantime, I will try to get some work done on the Sturmie/Bunker/whatsit. ( modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=rustbucket&thread=1895&page=4#77752 )

I just added the snow to the dio, so i though that i should post some pics. Unfortunately, i seem to have mislaid two links of one side of the tracks, so it's back to the original plan of the KV being tracked (via wear in the pin), and maybe abandoned. Anyway, the pics: The tracks: Thanks for looking! I will do my best to do some more work and post tomorrow, but iy day is going to be kinda full, as my family is going to Ottawa to go to the hobby shop ( ), visit grandparents, etc. -Oliver
