Nice work on the decals Andy and the filter really brings this one to life. Could be worse on the base...could have been the whole thing before you noticed!

Garegy- LOL Glad you liked the filter and your name. You know I was only kidding... thanks brother!
Dicky- Garage? That's even better... a lot easier to pronounce too! Hell I still can speak a bit. Thanks mate!!!

Boots- HEY!!! I know... Four more nights! LOL I think I will be OK. I will holler for reinforcements if I need help! Always good hearing from you my friend.

Leon-LOL! You can drive it as long as you let Carl shoot the miniguns! Thanks for stopping by... Guys- Last night was NOT a good night! I nearly just threw the little bird into the trash... here's why. After coats of Vallejo matt and satin to protect previous dark washes. I used AK Dust Effect and it was my first time using. I hate to say this but I HATED it. After application, I found it very difficult to remove excessive wash using AK White Spirit. I thought it was a goner!!! I had to apply a lot of white spirit repeatedly to tone down the dust. Then some parts started to fall off... I have no idea why... maybe I used too much white spirit and it was too hot or what? Not just that... another disaster was waiting. Removing the masking tapes it didn't look too good... Despite plenty of layers of Tamiya masking tapes and couple coats of Future to seal it off, paint managed to creep in! And dirt managed to get inside the cockpit too... Fortunately I gave the Little Bird another chance tonight... with help of PLENTY of Windex and q-tips, I was able to remove the mess... And instead of AK White Spirit, I used MIG Thinner to remove the excessive dust today and it seemed to help a bit... I think it looks OK now with the missile launchers and tail re-attached. I wish I never used AK Dust Effect on the Little Bird... too strong nearly ruining my whole work in my opinion.

Another good save Andy, this little ' bar steward' is fighting you all the way eh? Dont worry about too much dust, the RAf can remove 800kg of sand from the Chinooks coming back from Afghan

Steve- Really appreciate reading your opinion. I remember how dirty helicopters would be in middle of the desert as I have seen pictures in second issue of Weathering magazine. I am just disappointed that faded paint is nearly lost now. I will not use AK Dust Effect product again unless I have it thinned first or use on lighter tone instead of black or dark grey.
Tonight I hope to finish it... little more detail painting such as lights and missile launchers. I have been thinking about spraying a light coat of future on the canopy to make it look smoother. I can always wipe it off with Windex if it goes bad.
Thanks for dropping by my friend!

Andy, thats a real bummer with all the effects mate!!! May I suggest you DON'T spray future on the canopy. In my experience that don't work too well. You may have to bite the bullet, and stick with what you've got there fella!

Prof- LOL! Maybe modeling god are mad at me and Dicky? What did we ferking do this time? I think it will be OK... wish it had better outcome. Better luck next time... Chris- Thank you mate!!! I wasn't sure so I had to bring this up. You probably have saved me from another disaster. LOL OK I will bite the bullet and have it wrapped up. I will apply very little dark washes on the edge of canopy to hide the visible white putty parts.

Good save on this one Andy! White spirits can be 'aggressive' when it comes to dissolving glue joins and that's probably what happened with your case. Windex is essentially ammonia and it will strip Future clean off, that's why your canopy looks better now...whatever was on the Future in terms of dirt and paint got stripped away along with it. Stick with it, almost done!

Well crap Andy ! You i said i built another version of this same kit . I'll never build another one my fiend ! all of that clear canopy can be a real hastle to fit correctly and protect .sa you know . Give me a dirty piece of armor any day . I've noticed also that too much enamel thinner / mineral spirits will make glued connections weaken and even make plastic brittle . I think it removes some thing from the petroleum based plastic that weakens it . Did you think about spraying a light coat of Future over the "dust" to knock down the dust effect ? Glad you got er fixed buddy . Those moments of model anger can be very stressful .

Leon- Me too! Thanks! It really helped just to leave the bench and have a good night of sleep. Gary- So far this is not my favorite build but I think it will be OK as long as nothing breaks before the show. Bill- Thanks buddy! So it was the white spirit that have eaten thru the glue. Lesson learned... in the future I will not use AK Dust Effect on anything very dark especially black. Maybe it works well only on sand or tan especially armors. I will probably thin it with something first since it was too heavy to start with. Dicky- LOL! That would have been fun! Badminton and beer... perfect combination! Tell you the truth I was really wanted to throw it away two nights ago. But after more than an hour of removing the dust repeatedly using white spirit. That explains why it fell apart... lesson learned I have to say. Thanks mate! Carl- Boy, I was planning to buy same kit and build one with planks used to carry the delta force troops but now I am having second thoughts with this dog kit. Just wait and see... it was much fun building a Huey last year than this Little Bird for sure. So next year it will be a Blackhawk using much better kit so it will be fun again. Thanks for the tip not using too much thinner... didn't have any problem with armors. That's why I LOVE armors and figures too! TWO MORE NIGHTS LEFT...

Guys- Have to say that the Little Bird is the most challenging build since my return to the hobby. It is 99% completed... just like Rob's StuG. LOL Base is completed... added dry tall grass and applied more pigments. Here's the little bastard... permanently attached to the base by metal rods under the skids. Masking tape has been removed from the base and painted more details such as the missile launchers, etc. Added more dust on edges & platform. Not much to do tomorrow... LAST NIGHT... gonna apply smoke pigments around the launchers. Paint lights with clear red & drop Future on the head light, etc. Man, can't wait to call this done...

Thanks man!!! One of the skids snapped off again last night so I had to fix it again for their time. Way so fragile... if somebody ask me which was the dog kit I ever build... I would have to say this little bird.

Wouter- Thanks... really appreciate hearing your feedback. I agree about the desert base makes it more fitting for very dusty little bastard. Garage- Thanks my brother! You are way too nice... I don't think I will ever build another Little Bird again. LOL Huey was much more fun... I have Dragon 1:35 Huey in stash. (evil laughter) Luigi- I am afraid I am hooked to building bases now. I think its the best part of modeling now. I want to go back and build one or two for my previous builds especially the StuG and Pz IV. LOL Always good hearing from you my friend!

Daaaaamn...that is looking FINE! You know, there IS a market for pre-finished bases... Re: decals - I'll definitely take you up on that one. Will get you an address when I'm at my laptop. Do you have dates for your trip in June?

LOL! Thanks Dupes! Good idea about looking into pre-finished bases market... Yes looks like we are coming in third week of June. We leave Indiana on the 17th for two weeks so we may be in Maine by 20th or so. Am really looking forward to it... you promised that your stash will be open for public viewing?

Despite the issues this 'un has given yer Andy, I have to say you have done a superb job of it mate - that first pic of LB on her base is an absolute pearler fella - it's really a fantastic job and as I KEEP saying it's a testament to a great modeller to turn out a result like this in spite of the setbacks 12/10 Dicky- You are way too nice! I am glad it came out OK... but it is not done. I like the base better than the little bird. Say prayers that nothing happens tonight when I do final run. LOL Am really looking forward to our duel WIP later this year... have been doing research on Chally 2 and I understand why you told me not to buy AM barrel. Dupes- LOL! Sounds like a good plan! Got your PM... will mail next week before we leave for Florida. QUICK QUESTION.. completely forgot to ask you guys earlier... Little Bird has tinted window at the very top. I only have clear red, orange green and blue from Testor. I don't have clear grey or smoked paint... is it possible for me to add few drops of black or dark grey to Future product to make same result? Any help would be great!!

Post by wbill76 on Mar 22, 2013 20:39:57 GMT -5
NO! Don't add paint to Future. It's an acrylic self-leveling medium and there's no way you will get the pigments to 'thin' properly inside it and when it dries, you may get a less then stellar result. Can you get your hands on some Tamiya Clear Green or or Clear Smoke? Those would be much better alternatives. If you wanted to be adventurous you could try using something like food coloring to tint the Future but I would DEFINITELY try that on something other than the model first if you do give it a shot. The Little Bird came out looking great Andy despite the trials and tribulations along the way. Definitely one to be proud of!

OOPS!!! Too late... I think it will be OK. I added just one TINY drop of black paint and it worked OK. First attempt using Dark Grey on spare clear part didn't look good so black was better. I wish I have Tamiya Clear Smoke but it has been added to wish list. No time for a trip to the store and they are not pretty good at stocking Tamiya paints. So I took the risk... it has to be ready by tomorrow. LOL Just say prayers for me that it will come out OK. Man, I am so ready to call it done so I can start a new build right after the spring break. Thanks for the nice words... it has been an adventure with this little bastard.
