Prof - I dig that scheme myself, but couldn't think of a good way to replicate it? Especially since it appears to be hard-edged (at least from the box art). Think it would have to be brush painted to have any chance of coming out like that.

Hmm, could be tricky fella, only thought I would have would be to cut squiggly strips out of masking tape?

ALLLLLLRIGHT. Sorry for the lack of an update last night, I went into complete PE overload after I decided that the Tamiya kit parts for the schurtzen hangers pretty much sucked and were in dire need of replacement. Twelve little pieces doesn't sound like much, but each one needed 5 folds and had to stay square enough that I'd be able to mount the actual schurtzen on them. Anyway, job completed. Onto the pics! First one is the completed Real Model turret. Big resin block to which I added 4x Jordi Rubio barrels, some scrounged DML and Tamiya kit parts (some of the resin castings were a bit iffy...and I broke the turret ventilator removing it from the casting block ), and 13 or 14 grab handles courtesy of my Grab Handler and some nice soft copper wire. Most of the locating holes could still be seen, so it wasn't too much work to drill them out and superglue everything in place. Also put a thin coat of Tamiya Putty on the back surface that had some pitting from air bubbles during the casting process. Had to put some shims underneath the turret to make it sit flat when in the hull - that should also help to prevent rubbing off the paint from the hull if it ever gets spun around. Up next is the completed hull/turret/schurtzen setup. Added an RB Model antenna and MG barrel, the basic set of Tamiya etch, and some scratched tow cables. The kit ones are molded ramrod-straight, and they're supposed to bend around the various tool mounting point...I broke the first one four seconds into trying to manipulate it. Cut off the ends of the kit parts, bored them out, added picture hanging wire. The schurtzen, along with their tiny PE mounts (being scale thickness and all), are EXTREMELY flimsy. Flimsy to the point that I don't think I can paint them on the vehicle if any sort of masking is required. We shall see soon enough! Last shot is the whole shebang broken down into subassemblies to get primed. Using Tamiya rattlecan grey for everything except the roadwheels and tow cables which will get Wal*Mart rattlecan black. Couple coats of each tonight and ~18 hours drying time means I can start spraying tomorrow afternoon. After I pick a scheme, that is!

Couple of other things I forgot - eliminated the travel lock mechanism (as there's no barrel to lock) but left the mounting for such in place, mainly to fill the hole, but also because I assumed that that would have been welded on and not terrible easy to remove. Also got rid of the starboard tube that holds the barrel cleaning rods (as there's no barrel to clean). Wish I had parts to do JUST the mounts for that tube, but couldn't come up with anything good. Had considered adding some racks for 20mm ammo cans, but couldn't find a) any pics of such b) anything remotely resembling that in my spares box and c) the time to scratch them if I want to have this thing done in a week.
Enjoy!

Looking real good!!! It is starting to look like a Navy ship... not an armor. Its turret just reminds me too much of a ship turret instead... loving it.

Haha, me too! I still need to pick a scheme...and I need to spray paint this afternoon. :0
Andy - odd you mention that - I believe (from their use on a triple mount on the 251/22) that these were initially made for naval use.

Heading down to the basement now to take some snaps of the green base. "Resadgrun 2" or RAL6011 (supposedly). The AK stuff is...interesting. Will provide a description with the update.

Aaaaaaand we're off! Last thing I did last night was spray 2 coats each of rattlecan flat black (one dollar at Wal*Mart!) and Tamiya rattlecan primer. Results: So today after 18-20 hours of drying time I broke out the airbrush and a bottle of the new AK Interactive "Late War" colors to give them a shot. Late war Panthers were supposedly 2/3rds green, so that's what I went with instead of the usual dunkelgelb. The AK stuff is interesting. Not having used it before, I decided to try it straight out of the bottle with no thinning. Coverage seemed to take a while even with a fairly dense mix - almost three coats to fully cover (at least over the gray primer). That being said, it seems to set up ROCK hard once it's on...this stuff isn't going anywhere. It has almost enamel-y qualities in an acrylic carrier. My schurtzen were attached to blue painters tape to hold while spraying - the Tamiya primer peeled off of 9/10 pieces, while the side that had just been painted in AK (and flipped over) peeled only 1/10 pieces. This stuff is tough. For detail painting, I'm going to have to thin it...a LOT. I think it's going to take several coats to cover once I do so. Will report back after I play around with it a bit. Results of this evening's marathon spray session (first with cat, then without cat ):

Think I figured it out. Something along these lines with different colored roadwheels (versus all dunkelgelb). The more I look at the green base coat, the more I think it need some pre-camo fading/modulation/what have you. Very monotone currently.

Hey, I just noticed... in that first picture of the base coat, you had an intruder in the photobooth, didn't ya? So, other than the four furry feet, is there any difference between the two photos that I should be seeing and am simply to oblivious to realize?

First camo color on...AK's schokoladebraun. Unlike the green, I had some serious issues with this paint. Despite shaking the bottle for ~10 minutes, I couldn't get it to mix properly. Being so dense, I thinned it to 33% distilled water, 66% paint - still couldn't get it out of my brush even at full bore. Until the brown separated out. Apparently, this color is made of brown and orange pigment, and the brown must be MUCH heavier/less refined. Once that all leached out, it sprayed fine (with very little spatter). I'm going to have to play with the dunkelgelb before I commit it to the model - I need to have complete control (a la my usual Tamiya mix) if I'm going to freehand tight stripes along the brown bands. Off to mom's for a quick Easter brunch/lunch, then back in the booth!
