Hi all I will shortly be starting a scratch build of something that I have been working on for several months. Im going to make Boudicca in her chariot, which will include a 2 horse team and a driver. I have received a very detailed plan of an iron age chariot from the British museum together with a ton of information and pictures, in fact they supplied much more detail than I had actually asked for, so a big thankyou to Dr Jody Joy for her in depth knowledge and enthusiasm on the subject. I have also asked for some scratching help from our very own Dicky, as looking at the plans there seem to be a few complicated parts especially around the wheels and axles. My next thought now is to build the chariot from balsa or plastic . Hopefully this will start after ive finished the Coldstream guardsman which should be done shortly. Ill post a few pics of the plans and what the finished kit should, hopefully, look like. Thanks for looking Paul

Hey Paul,I'll watch this from the front and centre,if ya don't mind?....I do have a question tho, whatever happened to 'The Joust'? And a good question it is, ive put it on the back burner for now for a couple of reasons, firstly i wasnt happy with my painting on the caparison of the horse, and secondly i had a go at trying to make the shattered lance with very limited succes, so until i get those sorted it will just sit on my desk. It will be finished at some point but not just yet Paul

Thankyou all for your interest, just got to hope i can pull it off now heres a few pics of the chariot, this one was made from the same plans that i have, only this is full size and was used in the series about Boudicca with Alex Kingston in. in essence it had a kind of suspension as there was a floating floor that was strapped to the hoops fixed to the chassis, which appears to be a bit more advanced than the Roman invaders. I am also trying to decide whether to make it an action scene, i.e. horses galloping, cloaks flapping etc etc, or a standing scene, with nothing flapping, Paul

I reckon you've got enough stuff 'Flapping',with 'The Joust mate'!! Why not just have her and her driver stood there on the cheroot!!?

Hi all OK just got this one started, about time i hear you say, sorry about the delay but for the first time ive got 3 things on the bench at once . Im afraid i cant show you some pics of the plans as they are on a PDF, so as per the plans ive started with the axle and the yoke pole The yoke pole will be pinned into the axle and then the frame will sit on top of it all for now Paul

Thanks for looking in guys Well had a total night of insomnia last night but looking on the bright side had plenty of bench time. I just want to point out that when Dicky blogs his scratching and makes it look easy................IT ISNT !!! i spent 5 hours last night trying to make the yoke and after the second attempt finally did it This is the part thats fitted onto the end of the yoke pole and the horses fit under the end curves........hopefully. i have a 120mm horse made up and i keep trying it next to the parts to see how it goes, at the moment im a bit worried that the yoke pole isnt long enough, but at least if i have to make another one then thats a fairly easy bit to re do all for now Paul

Now this project sounds like some very serious modelling.
I'll be on the watch! I for my share always fancied ancient Egypt.
Cheers, Tobi

Bruce great stuff dont forget to blog it Leon much obliged mate I changed the yoke a bit. on the original the end curved bits are made up of one complete piece including the flat piece underneath, so i thinned out the top part of the curve and then rebated the bottom part for the flat piece to sit in and then put it back together again. Ive glued the whole assembly together, the original would have been pinned and then lashed together, so ill do the lashing when i find some suitable cord on to the bit ive been dreading now, the wheels Paul

Looking good Paul! Don't fear the wheels, if you can do a dragon you can do a pair of wheels no problem!

Many thanks for the comments and encouragement guys its really appreciated Just added a bit more to the yoke, ive done the lashings around the end of the yoke and the spa and also added the tracer eyes on the top of the yoke. The eyes are there for 2 reasons, they allow the strapping to go through where the yoke is secured onto the horse and also for the reins to pass through Ive also started on the first wheel. A few problems i can forsee, first how to make something perfectly round, second once ive made the outside rim ive have to work out the size of the spokes to make the hub sit central. So with this in mind i made a template, the wheel has to be 56mm in dia with a central hub of 14mm leaving the spokes to be about 18mm long, the wheel itself will be 3mm wide and the spokes 2mm in dia. so heres the template, marked out for the spokes at 30 degree angles. Another thing that i found interesting about the wheels is that the outside rim was made of one piece of timber, steamed around a former so it only had one joint. A much better system than the usual segmented wheels with joints on each segment more to follow Paul

Looking great... you have my attention now! I won't worry too much about the wheels... I don't think wheels from that era were that perfect.
